Szczesny: We’ll show people we’re good enough

Wojciech Szczesny thinks it’s only a matter of time before Arsenal win a trophy and pointed to the club’s recent form as evidence that the current squad will soon draw a line under the club’s eight-year trophy drought.

The Polish stopper, who last week penned a new long-term deal at the club, spoke positively about the consistency shown by his teammates since March stressing that the players have fostered a newfound confidence and team spirit.

“It’s quite an enjoyable time to be around the training ground,” Szczesny told Sky Sports.

“When results go your way, everything seems to be in the right place and everyone in a great mood, so we are all happy. But what we want to do is make sure we keep it going and not just rest on our laurels and think we have done it now.

“There is no reason not to [have that belief]. When you look at the last few months – almost 12 months really, because it is not only this season – we’ve been doing well.

“It was the last two or three months of last season, where we went unbeaten for a few games. We are confident that we see the quality is there and we know that when we play at our very best and do it consistently well, we can beat anyone basically.

“A couple of years ago, there was a case of not being consistent enough individually and as a team but now you can see that whoever comes into the team, whoever comes in does a fantastic job. We are at our best at the right time and it seems to be bringing results.”

Having come close to winning the Carling Cup in 2011 only for a disastrous mix-up between himself and Laurent Koscielny to gift Birmingham City a last-minute winner, Szczesny made clear that belief has been restored to a squad who’ve all too often suffered from a footballing equivalent of low self-esteem.

“I don’t want to say nobody can challenge us for a trophy, but if we’re at our best, we’ll win a trophy and that’s all that matters.

“I wouldn’t say we’ve proved everyone wrong and passed all the tests. I’ll say that when we get our hands on a trophy in May.

“I think what’s important is what we believe in and we believe that we are good enough with the players we have got and the work we are doing to win the Premier League.”

Paying lip service to suggestions Arsene Wenger must spend big money on reinforcements in January to help Arsenal over the finish line, the 23-year-old retorted that the current squad have more than enough quality to cope with the pressure.

“We have shown that to people over the last six months or so. We know that if we just carry on doing the same thing, we will show people that this team and these players are good enough to win a trophy without any extra additions or extra work that people are talking about. We certainly believe we can do it.”

On paper yes our starting 11 + 4 or 5 more have the skill set, talent, commitment and attitude to win the title. But we need numbers, and upfront we just can’t rely on Giroud all season long and we have no actual alternate to him so that’s the only argument I’d have against Woj’s quote. But based on what we can do on the field, yeah these guys have shown just how good they are, and this is not to say how good they can and will be with the likes of Mesut, Aaron, Woj, Kieran, Jack, Theo, Ox… Read more »

we know we are light up front and buying in the january window is always difficult for so many reasons, but the downside could be not buying anyone and costing us the league or a cup game. if we could get some one in who cant play in the champions league would’nt mind that, but hoping all the key players stay fit all season with our past injury problems is walking the tightrope.when our players get a small injury never seem to re-appear for months. The answer maybe play Theo up front against Southampton, Hull and Cardiff would give girould a… Read more »

Even it’s hard to find great players in january window, but still we must force to sign a decent striker (to cover Giroud) + a versatile back-up defender. The players are in a great confident & mood to end our trophy drought this season + the fans should always support them massively in every match. I’m sure if we could stay consistent until the end then we’ll have a joyful season.. Let’s finish our big job now.. Up Gunners!
