Arteta reveals Wenger half-time fury

Mikel Arteta says the 5-1 defeat to Anfield resulted in the angriest ever reaction he’s seen from Arsene Wenger.

The manager blew his top at the players following the pitiful first half on Saturday, and the Spaniard says he’s never seen Wenger that upset.

“The manager was really upset at half-time,” he told the Guardian, “but that’s normal because it wasn’t good enough for this football club. It was the angriest I have seen him.”

He’s called on his teammates to react in a positive manner as they prepare to face Man Utd on Wednesday.

“We have had two big crises already. I think the Manchester United defeat was a different game to this, but City and this one are really hard to take.

“We have to react because there is nothing we can do about this now. We know we need to improve and face those games in a different manner because after 19 minutes we were 4-0 down and it was like a car crash.”

Wenger himself told French television, “We were feeble in every important aspect of playing at the highest level: concentration, strength in the challenge and naivety.

“So from that moment on it’s impossible to win a game when you’re playing at that level. We’ve been well beaten twice now, and twice with an early kick-off away from home. But we have to ask questions of ourselves about this.

“If our confidence isn’t affected too much, I think it will come back and we’ll see a different Arsenal side on Wednesday night.”

As much as I’d like to spank those scumbags, I’d take 1-0

nerdgunner

As much as i would like to spank those scumbags…i’d take a 1-0

you know what i’d take? spanking those scumbags….”barbed wired-bats wielding hooligans invade united united changing room”

Silent Stan's Content Mustache

If Fulham can manage a tie in the Old Shitford I think we can spank them. But you’re right, as long as the end is result is 3 points I will take it.

Mick

The more I think about it, I think this coming game is the best thing for us. Firstly, we seem to lack confidence in these sorts of games and coming off of a short break we really don’t have time to ‘over-think’ the Utd game, nor allow the Liverpool loss to settle too much in our system. Secondly, nothing would really help us forget a thrashing over Scumbags #1 than a win over Scumbags a win on Wednesday would really help us forget the disaster of Saturday. I really think a lot of how we respond is going to come… Read more »

Orang Soul

Really well said Mick. Totally agree that the short turnaround between the games and the fact its another big match might just be helpful in this sort of situation.
Not enough time to over dwell on the result, and the angry fires should still be burning to hopefully be channeled into a far sharper more fired up performance against that lot.

Time to dig deep boys…
Come on You Gooners!

ooh2bagoona

What everyone is forgetting is that Man Ure are hurting too and will be looking to respond to a poor result.
A lot of their bad results are when one or both of Rooney and their other arse of a striker whose name escapes me. have been missing. They are not to be underestimated.

Having said that I am all for the barbed wire baseball bats in the Man Ure dressing room.

emanuel

“”If our confidence isn’t affected too much”. If? There’s no more room to “ifs” at this stage, playing for this club. The players must get over it and win the game!

Mimir

Time for another Bould team talk

ZiggZaGG

Couldn’t agree more Manu. We need to beat the mancs, no Ifs, buts or maybes!

We lay second and a point off the top; no need to panic. However 3pts would do very well in getting us back into the groove and set us up nicley for revenge againts the ‘pool in the FA Cup. COYG!!

Jenkinson's Screamer

Wish Arsene would get worked up before big games as well. The calm and precise demeanour may work against teams we should beat but sometimes a Churchill-esque speech before kick off before the match can do the trick as well (see Chelsea’s masseur’s affect before the City match), plus variating tactics helps as well. Think Arsene might turn it around on Wednesday though.

goonerbynature

I’d take anything Mourinho said with a pinch of salt. I don’t believe he ignored his players before one the biggest games of the season and left the masseur to talk to them.

Clock End Mike

“variating tactics”?

Any tactics at all would have done better on Saturday.

nerdgunner

Tactical football i think Arsene is always gonna come in second. You need a sharp young manager with fire in his belly for that kinda of thing. see a weakness in the team, spot it, act on it: Whether its a change in formation or subbing of players A or B something needs to be done to avoid a thrashing. Mourinho a cunt btw but you won’t see him go coward over subbing a player to suit a certain tactic if things are not going well. Whether its in the first half or in the second. Needs of the team… Read more »

Pedro

Cuntinho is a cunt of the highest order! I see many of the learned people commenting on this blog are in awe of that cunt. He maybe good but he is nowhere near the class and achievements of our manager. And all the bullshit he has been rolling out to the clueless media of late is absolutely abysmal. The naysayers will however be quick to point out that it’s a tactic to ensure his team is pressure free. It’s all a total eyewash if you ask any seasoned person who has dealt with the media for a prolonged period of… Read more »

Heroldgoon

Wenger is Class.

Wenger is a professor.

Wenger is loyal.

Will this qualities get us trophies anytime soon?

Pedro

Even if you discount class and knowledge, if loyalty can’t win your vote, with due respect there is something inherently wrong.

Arseblood

Wilshere and Ox would be suicide….Rosicky and Flamini must start.

teddy salad

Flamini is busying himself sewing the sleeves back onto all those tops he shredded earlier in the campaign. But lets not be dickheads about it, right? I mean, I once thought he was banned for 4 matches but it turned out to be 3.

Chair

well that will be a problem since Flamini is still banned for making that stupid tackle

papapapap

durrrr

Stone

Arteta is not injured, is he? It must be him with one of Ox/Jack/Rosicky

deano

Rosicky has to play this match. He will probably pick Ozil despite what some people think TR7 with Arteta doing the graft behind him and Giroud. Experience counts in this game they are weak in defence got to exploit that.

Ralph77

Still waiting for Giroud to ping one in off the keeper’s erection.

ANDY

Arteta also reported to have said. “Arsene gave it the full hairdryer. Even my wig moved”.

Ralph77

You mean his Lego hair popped off? Wow.

Ian

The image of sturridge doing that stupid dance after scoring will haunt me for the rest of my unhappy life.

Matt

I would have happily taken a red card and 10 game ban if Kos had just walked up and kicked him in the balls while he was doing that. Totally worth it.

AdamTM

I was thinking pretty much that exact thing at the time.

Cheesus

yeah and our unbeaten-when-played-90-minutes-together-record would still stand this way.

xxxrob

I hate that fucking dance, I want to vomit every time I see it!

Funny story though, I was playing FIFA14 with my mate and he scored a scummy fkn goal with Sturrige..
I was pissed at conceding.. then he did that fucking dance.. I was incensed…

Then like 3 of his other players came over and started doing it too. So there was 4 fuckwits all dancing away.

Then I laughed. And turned off the PS4.

nerdgunner

i really need to get a PS4

wam

Yes you do.

deano

Lets get manure out of the way then hopefully we can have a few players doing there own dance in the FA cup match.

Odd

The way he danced arrogantly in our area facing our goal felt insulting. There was no need for it, it’s not as though the rivalry has historically been particularly bitter. It betrayed a lack of class, and perhaps reflects a niggling sense of inferiority felt by Liverpool. We can take it. Having said that, it’d be interesting to see how their players react if we parody it after scoring in the cup.

Hoody

The super slo-mo footage of Sturridge puffing out his cheeks; the meaty slaps of his lips colliding like fishes out of water was a sight to behold. It was fairly uncomfortable viewing to be honest, nearly as disturbing as the Arsenal performance.

AllGunsABlazin

Am I the only guy who thinks that dance is kinda… Wavy? (pardon the pun)

Not against us at 4-0 down though. Cunt.

Apostolos

Arteta being the Captain probably should have done this on the pitch way before the first half ended.

Gunner From Another Mother

He should also tell Wilshere and Ozil that when they get knocked on the ground and don’t get the call they should be getting off their asses and show some hustle to win the ball back. This is becoming a worrying trend of theirs…I’m quite sick of watching Wilshere roll around on the floor, and Ozil’s downright laziness in this regard

deano

Watch the Spanish league and you can see why Ozil is so surprised that he doesn’t get free kicks.

Neddy Boo Boo

He doesn’t play in the spanish league anymore. And someone at arsenal would have told him the difference between the 2 leagues (if he couldn’t see it anyway). So this is definitely NOT an excuse.

das pauly bear

The image of shez stupid face to suarez after the save from his free kick will haunt me.

Good man shez ye kept it to five, it was the only one ye had a chance of saving anyway.

arsesicky

Szcznz
Sagna, kos, per, Gibbs
Arteta, wilshere
Ox, Santi, poldi
Giroud
Subs. Fabianski, Monreal, verm, gnabry, rosicky, ozil, Nicky b

Heroldgoon

i think we know Arsene is the last person to kick a player when he is down so Ozil will most likely keep his place.

He did it with Ramsey when we were all against it but look how well it turned out!

renoog

He (rightly) took ozil off against Liverpool… Suggests he’d trust the other four midfield starters more,

He dropped szechney when he wasn’t up to scratch last season, has been the best keeper in the league since his return.

Ozil to regroup himself and come back wit the bit between his teeth against Munich

Muse

Wenger needs to give all the players a good kick up the ass. I expect the team to be charging out of the blocks on Wednesday. I want them to hunt the ball down in packs and none of this blushing bride walk towards the opp players.

The away fans were fantastic on Sat and were right behind the team until the very end, but at home, the fans will not allow a repeat of that pathetic performance.

ANDY

Arteta is a good lad, but he looked like he’d been on the Gareth Barry pills on Saturday. To call him ponderous would be understatement. Was like a tortoise carrying Frank Lampard on his back.

Robxxx

i’d watch what you say there…Gareth Barry may be an Arsenal player before too long.

(Please, everyone down-vote this comment)

AllGunsABlazin

You got it champ

Ricardo

After the Manchester City defeat, you would think the players would have learned their lessons. Arsene shoulda barked instructions at the players to tighten up at the back until half time when it became 2-0. 2-0 is a very reversible scoreline.

SoqedHozi

Can’t remember ever seeing Wenger shouting instructions from the touchline. If he did I’m sure we wouldn’t be the same team. Pat Rice used to do all the barking, maybe Bouldy needs to pick up those reigns?

Arsene's Wrinkles

It’s sad for title challengers needed to be given a hairdryer at half time because of such an abject performance.

Heroldgoon

i think Arsene giving a hair dryer is much more fulfilling than Moyes. You’ll seat through it and nod your heads like you are getting what he’s going on about and return to the pitch not having understood a thing he said but you are scared because you got to see his angry gollum face.

DL Gooner

Arsene usually prefers pats them dry with a nice warm soft towel rather that a hairdryer.

Nolo_IX

He said that to French television? Where’s the link, then?

Henry! Chance! Goal!!

I woke up today hoping it was just a bad dream that we lost 5-1 to Liverpool. It’s a hard loss to take against those lot

Petit's Handbag

We’ve beaten United around 5/6 times in the League that actually mattered for something….and not since Nasri scored a double have we beaten them in a game that mattered.
Wednesday’s huge, if we fall more than 3 points behind our rivals, I fear that’s us done for.
Not sure if dropping Ozil will help but something needs to change.

renoog

2 seasons ago we bear them 1-0 home having lost 8-2 earlier that season. They then lost the league to their rivals whilst we pipped ours to a champions league place… I’d say that win mattered!!

WizardOfOzil

Ramsey winner? That was the season before dude, we lost 2-1 against them at the Emirates the season of the 8-2. Time of the infamous Arshavin substitution.

renoog

Dang, I got those two mixed up. Petit,s handbag,s point stands than…. Eeek

Xhani

Getting spanked like this by Liverpool of all teams is so infuriating.

Naija Gunner

Don’t want to remember that sorry ass day forever, we were sh*t on the pitch that terrible afternoon.

Heisenberg

I will be sitting in The North Bank on Wednesday and will be singing and screaming my heart out.

We need someone to step up and do a Freddie Ljungberg until the end of the season. We have the players to do it. COYG

mat

Let’s hope the defeat started the turn around by the players and create new winning run. If that not enough to wake them up in the title race, then nothing will.

SoqedHozi

Wenger, from what I’ve heard, never really says much at half-time. I hope this really hits home with everyone at the club and puts some fire in their bellies like the defeat at spurs one year ago.

fecal smear

We need to come out and hammer United. Pressure their poverty midfield, get a couple of goals, game over.

renoog

3 points mate, don’t care if we hammer them. Its entirely possible that our lads can have sorted their shit out and be back on top of the leagiue and in the quarter finals of the fa cup by this time next week

Oor Wullie

Podolski in for Ozil on Wednesday night.

Loaded cannon

Hair dryer treatment, hair was most definitely not perfect.

Arsenal seem to have a hard time dealing with pressure. I would have started rosicky over ozil. Also, it’s too early for the ox to be playing big Games, I’m quite happy having Gnabry out on the right. Games like these is where we needed Walcott, he provides a real threat of pace that only a few fullbacks can take on.

kermit

Should have brought on Kallstrom the game changer ..

Henry! Chance! Goal!!

Off topic, what I’ll like during the summer on defense.

1. Give Sagna a new deal
2. Give BFG a new deal
3. Keep Vermaleen
4. Sign Vidic
5. Name our central defense quartet “The Fearsome Foursome”

Witoldo

Vidic = slow and past it. He’s going to Serie A. Mark it down here.

Scott P

I might be wrong about this, but from what I remember hearing, even if Arsenal are having a “normal” bad day out Wenger’s still not the kind of manager to light into them like this… He must have been really, really upset (which of course we all were)

Fatgooner

I wonder if Wenger will be upset enough to drop the lazy Ozil against United? Probably not. Le Prof doesn’t have the balls to drop a 42 million quid player.

That’s the difference between Wenger and a truly great manager like Mourinho. Don’t perform and you’re out – even if you were Player of the Season, like Mata.

The good thing about Wednesday is that United are now so shit that anybody can beat them.

richpryor

You talk like that about Mourinho now because he just won against City but let’s see until the end of the season. Selling Mata might bite them in the ass in the end, guy was the best player at Chelsea. Mourinho loves having his own way and be the king whereas for managers like Wenger the Club and the team are the kings and what matters is the way they play football.Much better if you ask me. Mou sucks the dick of Abrahmovic! (sorry can’t talk about that despicable guy without mentioning him with disgusting stuff in his mouth)

Fatgooner

I can see why you’ve named yourself after a great comedian: that was an hilarious post. If anybody loves having everything his own way it’s Wenger – and that’s the problem with the club right now. I dearly hope I’m wrong, but the prognosis right now is that we’ll collapse and finish either 3rd or 4th while either City or Chelsea snatch a title we could have won. Our stubborn, intransigent manager has probably blown our chances of winning the Premier League by refusing to address our weaknesses in the transfer market, and by being tactically naive in the big… Read more »

Fatgooner

I was thinking of Eddie Murphy. I know Richard Prior wasn’t in it. But he was in Silver Streak – I love that too.

Bucks

Wenger is not a truly great manager? Care to tell that to Bergkamp, Henry and Fabregas? Listen, I’m not saying the man is above criticism, his (our) team just lost 5-1 and at Arsenal that should be unacceptable. However lets not exaggerate his faults. I don’t really want to get into the debate about whether or not he should stay or go and the various extremities that are being shouted when ever there is a debate. But lets not rewrite history while we are shouting at one another for it.

jason

Different types of Managers… Wenger will put faith in Ozil “always see the best in your players cause they can always surprise you in a positive way” as he ones quotes.. Mourinho is more of drill instructor.

deano

Funny but Maureen seemed to pick Ozil all the time at Madrid and stated “he is the best number 10 in the world” cheers fatgooner great example.

Bould's Eyeliner

I can’t tell if he’s serious…

Hamish

Why do we need Bould to shout at the team WE need a fffin captain on the park a Tony Adams or Viera

benny

I think players are getting tired. Playing 6-7 times in month its too much if you don’t have enough players to rotate. Having to many players its hard to keep them happy all. So wenger choose the way, to have less players and to keep them happy, even if he don’t win trophies, he is filling the BOARD accounts with millions. I am afraid that Saturday’s lost will be like knockout from tittle race. We’re short, even the youngest Arsenal fan knows it. And wenger keep ignoring us. Untill wenger is Arsenal manager, we will not see trophies. It’s hard… Read more »

ThaatArsenalGuy

Hearing this makes the defeat much easier to take. You know the boss hurts like us.

renoog

Don’t think that could ever be questioned. I know his paid handsomely and has more individual power then many of his counterparts at their clubs, but he has given 18 years to Arsenal, of course he is a fdan too

boozy

No ‘if’s’ or ‘but’s’ PLEASE against Utd on Wednesday. Utd are there for the taking, we really need to show we can be ruthless against the big teams. I’m starting to worry about Ozil. I know he’s a fantastic footballer but I can see a tactical demolition job at the courtesy of Wenger happening to him. Ozil thrives on players getting ahead of him, and in between defenses. He needs runners who he can play cutting passes to, not passes back or to the side of the pitch. Our main focus is Giroud who we look to find to play… Read more »

WizardOfOzil

The result at the weekend was the best thing that could have happened to us. We’ve been inviting a massacre like this for a while now, always expecting our defence to clean up even when outnumbered. Midfield has been the problem for me. All of them lining up in the centre to take possession where they pose no danger, none of them creating space off the ball whatsoever. Holding onto the ball like showboating fucking children instead of moving it on quickly and with quality. So the positive I take from the defeat is that it might just be the… Read more »

santori

Yeah very likely because if we go in cautious, that’s what we get.

OTOH Liverpool went in with nothing to lose and as they say in the SAS, who dares wins.

We mustn’t be too afraid of United and we should go in with the mentality that we must absolutely win this.

We need ramsey back full of confidence! My line up on wednesday – Szny, sagna, mert, kosc, Gibbs, arteta, the ox, santi on the left, jack in the middle, rosicky on the right and giroud up front! COYG

santori

Was surprised that Monreal started against Liverpool. Also maybe the midfield was not compact enough. I like Rosicky for these sort of games. It’s the added experience and the fight that we need and yes him even at Ozil’s expense. I like Ozil but he needs a bit more stomach for the fight IMO. It’s something that if he brings on board will improve him as a player (much as it did with Fabregas in his last seasons with us) Jack and Arteta are crucial but essentially, everyone must simply switch on from the start. That has been an issue… Read more »

Hope Wenger gets the players to respond on the pitch on Wednesday, making it clear to every single player in the squad that abysmal performance will mean their place in the team is very much up for grabs like he did last season with Sir Chesney and unfortunately for Vermaelen.

Ryan tan

Basically our defence got outpaced with their 3 forwards.Wenger must deal with this tactically before other teams tries to do the same.It would be better if we play vermalean as well on wed.united will try to go all out on wed and we need 5 defenders to cope with that.and for the love of god,pls play poldoski alrdy.Giroud is getting marked so tight as a lone striker and he doesnt have the suarez in him to dribble pass them.

santori

nah we don’t need 3 Cbacks. but we do need to get our shape right and stay focused from get go. Podolski yes. I would like to see him on at some point. He can really punish them IMO. Dunno if a 4-4-1-1 bias right side could help accommodate him : …………………………..Back 4………………………………….. Chamberlain…….Arteta……….Jack………..Rosicky…………. …………………………………………Podolski…………………. ………………………Giroud……………………………………… In this case though, we lose Ozil and Santi (which is basically invention). I am very nervous with us going into the United game. United have been poor but their drop points this weekend will again mean there is added incentive for them to perform well. They won’t want to be humiliated by us with their struggle to even get into the europa if they lose. We must expect them to come at us like Liverpool did. Basically we were extremely complacent and started cold. Liverpool got an early lead and then struck with two set pieces which we should never have allowed. That just compounded everything. I don’t think we are going to allow united to do to us what Liverpool have just done, nor do I think they are going to roll over and feel our sweet retribution. I suspect it will be a dicey game much like the Chelsea one was after the city game. But I think Chelsea,s defence is significantly better then united,s and we will be the ones to knick this.

Sir Chips' Crisps

Unfortunately I thought much the same about Liverpool’s defense but it turned out not to matter because we seemingly never got that far in the first 20 minutes, and it was over. Mata, Rooney and that Other Guy are capable of the same kind of thing as Coutinho, rat face, Sturridge and Sterling if we start the same way. Let’s hope for a start with a bit more intent on Wednesday. Maybe give Jack and BFG a bit of the pre-match speaking honors to light a little fire!

Sir Chips' Crisps

That said, two teams smarting from poor games it could very wel be nervous and dicey. Let’s hope otherwise from the gunners. I’d like to see Arsenal strike some fear into their adversaries.

ruelando

The manager being piss. is pure crap, just crap, he needs to be piss with himself, our attitude to the game in the first half has been non existent from the start of the year, bearly winning matches with a 5-15 minutes burst of energy, not for 45, not for 60 and definitely not for 90 and he chooses to be piss now. Bad habits are hard to break and the teams laid back attitude caught up with them, a bag of talk will not win you titles, but players who put in the hard work will. Personally i like… Read more »

Its time to put the talking away and make the statement on the pitch. We already made a lot of noise about how we were going to step up during Death Run 1 and failed it. Man U looked shite against Fulham so maybe we will put 8 past them (well if Fulham can get 2…)

StatesideGooner

Very nice Football Manager reference! Hoping for a quick turnaround midweek. Cheers

too strong. but agreed that he hides in games. which is why when they played us, chelski allowed him more of the ball so he could pass it sideways all day long.

adiiii83

Our performance had nothing to do with Ozil being lazy, or Monreal and Arteta being a weak link. Our performance has been exactly the same as it has the last month. the difference is we ran into a top motivated side who gave us no respect. We always start games like we didn’t warm up, moving the ball around very slowly and not creating anything. Then 2nd half we step up a gear and walk over the little teams, which is ok. But when you play the big teams, that has to be that derby attitude where there is 10… Read more »

Good point. I think this is a timely kick up the butt for the boys. As some Liverpool blogger surmised, it seems that this Liverpool side is capable of blowing away any team on its day. Arsenal just happened to be in the way and the slow starts killed them. I expect a fired up Arsenal on Wednesday. This showed how much we missed Walcott and Ramsey with their direct attacks. I cannot remember the last time arsenal have beaten a good team by more than 5 goals this just proves the mentality in the arsenal camp.every top team is able to do this….Barcelona, RM, Bayern Munich, Dortmund, Man city, now even Liverpool have been doing this. To me it seems like we’re really missing Ramsey. The composition of the midfield has looked off since his injury, and we just haven’t found the balance we had when we was in the line up. Liverpool was simply the team that took advantage of that. Ozil also hugely benefitted from his runs (Theo’s too), so I fully expect his performances to go up once Rambo is back. That said Ozil had better up his performance from whatever that was at Liverpool by Wednesday. We were flirting with disaster for a good few games, but our quality just edged us… Read more »
