Ramsey: we have to take our chances

Aaron Ramsey has bemoaned the team’s finishing after today’s 1-1 draw against Leicester.

The Welshman, so often on the mark, was as guilty as anyone, fluffing a chance in the second half when his looped header was easily saved by Kaspar Schmeichel, and he believes the team need to work harder on their finishing to avoid further dropped points.

“We just weren’t clinical enough in front of goal today to convert the chances into goals,” he said.

“They played well and defended very well, we had a lot of the ball and had some opportunities to break and chances to score but we didn’t take them.

“The goal that we conceded as well, we switched off from a throw-in, they switched sides and scored – it could have been avoided. The overall feeling is disappointing.”

Meanwhile, Arsene Wenger admitted that Yaya Sanogo’s lack of goals are a problem for the player and the team, but backed the youngster to come good.

“If you play up front and you don’t score it’s very quickly a problem. I don’t think that problem will last very long and at the moment when you have a chance to play for Arsenal Football Club as a centre forward and you don’t score, it’s a problem for you.”

And while saying he’s still looking for new players before the close of the window, he stressed it’s not always about spending money.

“The solution every time you don’t win a game is to buy somebody. We are out there and we try our best, you have to trust us to buy the best possible solution but as well everytime you don’t win a game think there’s a miracle man.

“Why did Man City not win the game against Stoke? They have plenty of strikers, football is a team sport and we have not got to sell it as an individual sport.”

your job is to create chances, pass the ball effectively and defend well
scoring goals is a bonus
better start doing the basics Aaron

heroldgoon

At the end of the day football is about goals. all the other fucking 9 players are passing it from corner to corner with nothing to show! does it hurt to have one guy who fucking tries?

Opto

no problem with him trying as long as he fiirst does well the things he’s supposed to do

oh well, they won the league last year with their plenty of strikers you know

Moxxi

Hehe, and Aguero or Dzeko would not go 17 games without scoring and have a convertion rate of 0%. I think Wenger on purpose act stupid. Because that we lost today is not the issue, akd ye knows it., it is that we lost while playing the hands down worst striker in the whole league upfront when we did not have to seeing as there has been ample time to get a proper striker to compete and rotate with Giroud. Someone at the level you need in a premier league team and a title chasing team at that If we… Read more »

We lost?

Formerly Known As El Capitano

Now then.. Transfer Deadline day, and we are a few players away ( CF / CDM / CB ) from having a genuine title contending side. So far, we have seen some serious decent/world class players who would fill those positions go to other teams, the Falcao to United deal, has literally blown my mind.. the fact he was a loan deal as well.. I honestly cant fathom why we haven’t made a move for him. We’ve recently purchased or invested X amount of money to sign Sanchez & Ozil over the last two seasons.. a combined amount of what… Read more »

17 games and still awaiting the first goal. Yes Arsene, I agree that is a problem. You’ve got the power to do something about it. The rest of us can just make frustrated comments on Arseblog news.

Mate Kiddleton

At least we’re still unbeaten…

Previgo

Why do we play ozil on the wing?
Why do we change cazorla when we should change ozil?
Why is campbell sitting on the bench whistles “bambi on ice leads the line”
Why havn’t we signed a DM?
Why havn’t we replaced vermaelen?
What has rosicky done?
Why cant we play our wingers on the wing and cam’s in the middle? (campbell-sanchez-ox)?
Why do i prefer sanogo to giroud? Because I’m tired of seeing an average striker lead our line for so long.
Why is john terry a cunt?

Dylan

lol that bad attempt at getting those thumbs up with that last line..

TRob13

Ozil (face buried in hands):
I used to thread goal-scoring passes to Ronoldo, Benzema, Higuan, Gomez, Reus… And now when I look up all I see is Sonogo[al].
WHO DO I PASS TO?!?!

Arseblood

How clinical can we be with Sanogoals up front…I want to categorically state he is not even as good as Bendtner.

Perry S.

totally agree. maybe someday he will come good, but we can’t be gambling with our season trying to figure out when it is (if ever) he comes good. the biggest problem I have with him is not only is he not scoring, but he’s really poor with his first touch and his passing and hold up play is average at best. giroud, even when not scoring, did all those little things that made him so important to our attack. he brought others into play so often, that even when he wasn’t scoring, others were on account of his hard work… Read more »

Ramseys been off colour lately…

Bollocks AW. It has been a ‘problem’ for 2/3 years now. Sort it.

bring back dein

when you put such pressure on your strikeforce by having a pair of donkeys in giroud and sanogo what do you expect – chelsea had drogba, costa on the books already and they still spend to pick up remy – thats the desire of a manager to win the league and wenger doesnt have that, its all about the moneymaking wins, the qualification for the champions league, the 4th place that concerns wenger

AN Other

Yes Ramsey, for that we need to buy a proper striker. We can’t go on like this for ever. City scored 100 goals last season. Liverpool weren’t too far off. We were 40 goals behind and can’t see getting any closer this season. We can’t always put it down to lack of resources and bad luck. We need to buy a world class striker. No two ways about it.

Previgo

And it puzzles me when people say we need a back up for giroud(kinda mistaken him for lewandowski?)
We need a f****** replacement not even a back up, if you want a backup then why moan about zigic, sanogo(who i think will be better in future) and bendtner? What we need is a WC replacement who can relegate giroud to the backup league! Ffs, this is arsenal we are talking about here.. HENRY? WRIGHT? DENNIS? What is happening?

Dial square

I don’t mind if we don’t sign anyone, of course I’d love it if we signed a world class striker but if we don’t, we don’t, as long as Wenger doesn’t insult us with the usual shit about “doing all we can to win the league”
It takes money to win the league, big money, look at Chelsea, Fabregas, Costa and Remy, put them in our side and what have you got……..

Daniel

STILL INVINCIBLES

La Défense

Jesus, please return to last years form. Don’t get carried away. Pride goes before a fall..

Highberry

I agree with La Defense and the actual quotation is “pride goeth before destruction” and i’m not being pedantic here. I don’t want to criticize Sanogo here the boy is obviously trying but AWif you truly believe that we’ve got enough options without buying then why not use them? Put Joel on first with Sanchez and Özil in his proper place. Have the courage of your convictions and I’ll back you all the way

Malaysian gunner

Stop the elaboration and tiki taka. These tactics are a heaven sent for defenders.
If not,get readt for another fight for 4th.

City game is almost a must win game now. If we don’t, we may find ourselves 7 points behind Chelsea already and stand the risk of seeing our title charge end at Stamford Bridge. I hope our fortunes change.

Hopefully the Boss will pull out an Ozil like transfer stunt…Cavani/Carvalho

If only clever one(or two) would win matches, we would be 4 times champions already

El Fabuloso

I think Ramsey has gone back to his over elaboration, he needs to go back to the basics.
4-1-4-1 sucks too.

Compare our front players with top sides around Europe….it’s actually quite funny when you say it out loud. Try it….you actually have to laugh. Barca : Messi, Suarez, Neymar Real : Ronaldo, Benzema, James Citeh : Aguero, Jovetic, Negrado,Dzecko Liverpool : Sturridge, Ballotelli, Lambert Utd : Rooney, RVP, Wellbeck Chels : Costa, Dogba, Remy PSG : Ibra, cavani, Lavezzi Sanogo and Giroud are the only centre forwards at the club…the rest are make weights who can ‘do a job’ We just can’t ever, ever compete…so what’s the point of it all? Who is there to sign at the 11th hour? Bony – decent with PL experience but not ‘top top quality’ Negredo – on his way to Valencia Falcao – City & Real interested so forget it Martinez – big fish small pond Wellbeck – feck off Hernandez – see Wellbeck Benteke – see Wellbeck & Hernandez Carlos Bacca – brother of Chew & scorer of 14 la liga goals last season – apparently we’re interested. MTZ

Bacca and Bony are both decent options. By decent, I don’t mean world class, but a serious upgrade compared to Sanogo. Falcao, Cavani and Negredo would all be better choices, obviously, but that’s not happening. The rest aren’t any better than simply adjusting our tactic and using Podolski up front, which Wenger clearly doesn’t see as a possibility.

Naija Fan

Football is a team game but you need a good striker to complete the effort of the other players. For a team seeking to win the league and probably do very well in CL, come on we need a world class striker. Do we really deep in our hearts believe we can compare with other top teams across Europe. while it is early to judge our team, it obvious we are still going to fight for fourth place if we do not get a super striker.

Hitul

Our strengths and assets are clear but ffs aren’t our weaknesses clear to our manager yet??? The Sanogo point doesn’t need anything adding. I would love to have a striker who had a strong World Cup – oh we do, warming the bench. Suffice to say Wenger is happy to take a punt on our success with this shallow squad. He has no sense of the risks his ideology involves. He’s Reverted to type towards the end of the transfer window. Rivals wiping the floor with us. Remy, Balotelli +++…Chelsea and Liverpool really needed strikers more than us didn’t they… Read more »

Each time Wenger mentions lack of the right personnel in the market i just wonder what sort of players he is looking for. How did he get the current team and from where did he get them, from the moon? if it is possible to bring falcao, let him do that or go for Jackson Martinez. Wenger should have seen the lack of goal threat from our front line since Rvp left and save every one this panic buying.

neutral

Should have sold Poldi and Campbell long ago if he won’t use them, buy a good left sided attacker we will use. Stop playing midfielders on the wings!

Jimmy C

I’m as frustrated as everyone here, but it’s good to put everything in perspective. Man City and Chelsea have built ridiculous squad depth over years with lots and lots of money. We have only just started building our required squad depth in the last 18 months, so to suddenly expect us to have 25 superstars is unrealistic. Also, to lambast Wenger for comparing us to Man City (the loss to Stoke) and then criticise us for not being like City (with lots of superstars) is hypocritical. You shouldn’t just pick and choose when to compare us to our competitors. Also,… Read more »

Fully agree. A lot of chances today but not a lot of really good chances. When teams pack the box that’s what happens sometimes. We’ve only been spending for a few windows and unlike some of the mega rich clubs we can’t spend 20 mil and up on a player and not have it work out. We have money now but not that much money. I think what Wenger is going to do is make one big signing and three 10-15 mil signings a summer. I think he knows who he wants and what window he wants them in and… Read more »

I think the main issue here is that even a Remy “buries a few of those chances” or at least one, which makes a big difference in the mind of the (like myself) highly agitated and frustrated Gooner, as it translates to 3 points. I was willing to go along with the calculated risk of not signing a ST before Giroud got crocked but right now, and with today’s performance in mind, it seems ludicrous. I’m not talking about the proverbial WCS we’ve all been salivating over, just a solid player who can fill in until the HFB is fit.… Read more »

Funny how Le twat forget to mention that citeh lost to Stoke and are still above us in the league. And how they won the league last season and another cup just for fun. When it’s convienent he says he only worries and will comment on Arsenal. When things don’t quite go to plan he waffles on about other clubs. when he rests players he forgets to mention that chelski, Barca and others were all playing their World Cup final players. He has lost it completely.

santori

We have a lot of assets. But we are lacking specifically in two departments this season still which need be addressed : 1) We are lacking a Cback. Chambers has done well but we need 4 to be solid. Preferably we should be getting someone who can challenged Meterscielny. Back up is not good enough. 2) We lack firepower. Alexis is not a CF and is wasted in that department where he is better deplyed at RW given ability to run at players and drift at will. When we play him through the middle, we run into complications with most… Read more »

SoundBoy

It’s been 10 seasons since we last won the EPL and the title will continue to elude us till we become proactive/decisive with both game tactics and strengthening long standing deficiencies within the squad.

Presently we are too reactive; and even saying we are reactive is a stretch – if you consider the fact that our ‘Bank Manager’ of a coach failed to react to a ‘carbon-copied’ game plan that was used by 3 opposing Managers (Liverpool, Chelsea, Everton) to maul us last season!

Los Angeles Gooner

@ Jimmy: To say City and Chelsea have taken years to build over simplifies it. Mourinho sees a need and sets to fill it. It looks as if City does the same. We’ve needed a CF and a DM for 3 yrs and counting. Knowing that do you have faith Wenger will fill these needs? And if you do when do you think he’ll do it? I for one am tired of his lip service about “quality” and “special players” then he chooses not re sign Cesc. What’s more baffling is some of our “Targets” are young CAMs! Chelsea will… Read more »

What matches were you watching this weekend? Everton and Spurs look more threatening then ours? It’s still early but really?

Jimmy C

I’d love another CF and DM, but I still feel it’s important to reserve judgement until after the transfer window is closed. This is supposedly the summer where we are financially stable enough to buy who we want, so he still has a few hours to go out and get those targets. I think it’s more than fair to question his lack of transfers if we haven’t significantly improved the squad in the next 24 hours, but i still get surprised at all the vitriol thrown at the man who purchased Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez so recently. Also, some… Read more »

Can everyone ease up on Sanogo a little. In footballing years he’s about 19 and has played about 500 minutes with six starts in his two seasons at the club. Thats about five and a half games. Cut the kid some slack. Even if you dislike him you’re going to be seeing plenty of him so you might as well get behind him and support him to the fullest. I for one think he has a lot of talent and potential and soon the goals will start to come.

Abidan

sanogo should be loaned just like Campbell was , he is not arsenal material yet, the wise thing to do is play campbell more in the absence of walcott the lad has nothing left to prove he is a very talented player

goonero

We were awful yesterday. Painful to watch. There just looked like there was no synergy in midfield, too many players tryiing to do the same thing, players trying to force things that they can’t do. This team has a long ways to go before we can start talking about a title challenge. As for Sanogo, the less said about that the better.

Ben

It was a draw for fuck sake.

The way some people are getting on you’d think it was a 10 game losing streak. Or Man U. Or Sp*rs.

The lads will come good.

Duke

Too right mate.

Can everyone take a moment to remember our last two trips to Wembley. Remember? Right.

Have a lovely day fellow Gooners.

MTZ

Sure it was, but we’re three matches into the new season and we’re already 4 points behind Chelsea, despite playing against the same teams. Unless we improve very, very soon, the title race will be over October 5th, when we face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, as we’ll be 10+ points behind a team that is unlikely to drop too many points this season.

Also, if we go to Stamford Bridge with Sanogo as our hit man, we might as well park the bus and go for a draw, Mourinho style.

tony barber

We were way of the pace in all departments yesterday, but with what we have why is Rosiky now forgotten, and why does Wenger never make a change till 75 mins, the squad is just not good enough to play Wengers passing game they are never in the right position not enough players with a thinking brain

Earl of Downstate

If this news about Falcao to United for £55million is true, then I shudder to think of the excuses we will hear for not having identified enough “Quality” in Falcao to have gone in for him. The impotus now is to kick on, and even if we finish in the same place as we did last year, it’ll be a disappointment given the platform that the FA Cup should have provided us.
