Wenger: ‘Electric’ Welbeck is growing in confidence

Arsene Wenger paid tribute to Danny Welbeck after the striker’s first professional hat trick helped the Gunners to a comfortable 4-1 victory over Galatasaray in Matchday 2 of the Champions League.

The former Manchester United striker nabbed a well taken brace before the break and then capped off a fine evening with his side’s fourth seven minutes after the break.

Reflecting on an evening of clinical attacking play, the boss noted that Welbeck is growing in confidence with more game time.

“He was on the end of good movements tonight and we had good pace in our game. Our transition play and our finishing was good, and Danny was at the end of good collective movements.

“Of course it’s good to see that he’s slowly gaining confidence and finishing well. It’s nice to see the potential is there and he’s starting to get there – hopefully that hat-trick will help him gain confidence.

“It always helps to know that you have a good chance to play in the next game. What’s good for me is that his link play is good as well. His teamwork and his work rate is at the level of the team.

“His attitude is very positive – he’s a team player, not just a finisher. He has learned that on the flank and he wants to help the team.”

Asked what he’s learned about the England international that he didn’t know before the game, Wenger continued: “That he’s a good finisher. I believe that, technically, he’s very sound. That was a surprise that he’s technically clean and that he’s a good passer of the ball.

“I didn’t know he was so quick. Honestly, I knew he was quick but he can be electric when he starts – he has great pace.”

A tip of the cap to Danny from the team at Arseblog News, he’s only the third Gunner to score a Champions League hat trick. The first is the greatest striker in the club’s history, Thierry Henry, and the other is TGSTEL, Nicklas Bendtner. Impressive company to be keeping so early in his career at the Emirates.

Some Weird Guy

That flick over the defender he did in the middle of park and then the run to get clear was so awesome!

The Ghost of Paul Robinson

That “He scores when he wants” chant was raucous and inspiring.

Danny Welbeck, Danny Welbeck, Hey hey hey……dat guy.

Emmanuel

What was that about “him not scoring enough goals”? The Mancs are going to regret this one big time.

Injured Gooner

How about we expect 20 goals from Sanches and Welbeck, and add 10 to that total from Oxlade. How about we expect that from them before Giroud even gets back to full training.

I would be happy with those numbers in the BPL season.

We’re looking at 10 goals, across all competitions in just that one picture.

wheressteve

If he can keep up with the exalted career that TGSTEL had we are in good hands!!!

Luckily i think he’s a little bit better that that.

Strevs

Should shut up the whining bitches who complained we didn’t sign Balotelli for the same fee! He was busy doing fuck all for Liverpool tonight as they lost to Basle. Let’s hope this continues, he has certainly surprised me with his flicks, control, and sheer speed!

David

I will admit to be a person who wondered whether Balotelli was a wiser choice for the same fee, but his attitude will always let him down.

Welbeck, on the other hand, is such a great team player and, at 23, he has nothing but upside! Amazing what playing in your preferred position will do!

I’m sure Man U will regret this sale when you consider RVP and Rooney are getting on in age.

AC

Sorry it was meant to be thumbs up!

Policeman's Bangers 'N' Mash

Damn iPhone.

SB

One the same page mate.

One thing I still wonder though is that, if Wenger can transform Danny, then what he would have done someone like Ballatoli’s natural ability! So still wonder which £ 16M would have us most value.

Ofcourse Balotelli’s attitude is a dampner. RVP was supposed to be a hot head before joining us.

However, what makes the Danny deal a winner for me is, everytime he scores ManU will be tugging their balls!

Policeman's Bangers 'N' Mash

Mate have you seen Balotelli’s antics? He makes Van Persie look like Jesus Christ (sorry Ramsey).

Every week he’s in the news. Seriously. FUCK. THAT. Imagine that twat fucking up the relative harmony we have of good guys like Ramsey, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Arteta, Mertesacker … I could go on. Balotelli is garbage.

iamgunner-lilwayne

Your a hater of note. And u were dissing wenger the other day now u say he can transform balloteli. Sounds like a vote of confidence.

Formos

One thing is to be hothead and completely another to be brainless like Balo.

Gunnerbattalion

I noticed as well. He is freakin fast! And strong!

Here’s one to #welbztoshootthechavsdown! *cheers*

Erwandy

That speed. Outrunning and out muscling defenders (on and off the ball)….the kind of striker we have longed for w while. Keep em coming Danny Boy!

Kos the boss

It’s not that he has just pace and power , he’s absolutely not clumsy and very assured in his movements.

sambo

Beautiful! This was my preferred line up that i have been screaming for! PACE PACE PACE! and Theo to come back too!

Tom Bombadil

Dat Guy Welbz! You could tell from his previous performances that he was capable but missing that end product tonight was beautiful and even though gala were woeful in defense, Welbeck showed his class. His pace+power are what arsenal fans were screaming for last year when we went through our dry spell. Extremely encouraging that we have three willing runners in welbeck, sanchez and the ox to get in behind and Walcott isn’t even back yet! We all know about the deficiencies in CB and DM BUT we do have some fucking class throughout our team boys. More performances like… Read more »

At least Flamini recklessly flew in from behind near the Gal. goal for his token yellow – bc thats what he does at 3-0 up. I was already smiling, but that topped off the half for me. COYG!!!

Andre Kelley

If I remember correctly, that Flamini foul came after a previous (yet another) foul on Alexis and then Sneijder blatantly pushing Flamini off the ball with his arms stretched, while the ref standing five yards from there happily ignored both those fouls.

naija gunner

I see him banging in 20 goals(minimum) this season

Hi-brid

Not sure Arsene should really be openly admitting to quite this level of surprise…!

gunnermite

finally someone to give giroud a reason to lift up his game esp in front of goal

Arsenalman29

Nobody is mentioning this.

But i hope Wenger sticks to this formation
4-2-3-1

100% this is our best formation.

Please lord he sticks to this formation against Chelski. And i would start the exact same players. Maybe even give Ospina the nod over Schezny, but i do not mind Schezny in nets. I just do not want another decision like tonights one, but either keeper starting i would be happy.

COYG

DT

Couldn’t agree more regarding the formation.

My only concern would be Cazorla next to Flamini – a bit light weight considering the size and power of Matic. I suspect Cazorla will come out for Wilshere in that spot, to add a bit of bite. Still I love that front four.

I think it will be hard for Walcott to push the Ox out of the starting 11 on current form.

Sir Mo' Goalz

I thought it looked more like a 4-1-4-1 from the starters we fielded. That said, much different feel, with Cazorla distributing from deeper. Definitely a positive, but Wenger has also mentioned the possibility of moving the Ox back to that positive for more of that 4-2-3-1 feel. About a zero percent chance on that for Chelsker this weekend, but to be fair, Ox lived up to the name tonight. Strength to match the very strong performance tonight, a very good performance behind Welbz (far and away) with SanchOzil. Only thing is it is goofy to see such a strong winger… Read more »

No way. His favorite Wilshere has to be in the team, fuck the formation.

2014-2015 = the year we've been waiting for

My thoughts exactly when Wilshere came on for Ozil last night for a 10 minute run-around even though he should have rested his ankle. Personally I’d rather Jack not start against the Chavs due to his tendency to lose the ball in dangerous positions. The fact Cazorla was allowed to play the 90 minutes hints that he’ll be bench’ed against Chelski to make way for Wilshere. Whereas Ox was substituted early meaning he should play. For some reason Wenger’s hell-bent on using this 4-1-4-1 against the ‘big’ teams this year… meaning in front of the Back 4 it might be:… Read more »

Cazorla looks miserable these days, wondering what he has to do to get in the team. I think its awful he’s being sidelined.
I’d take cazorla on the left, Ozil in the center, and Ramsey sitting in the middle with whoever is pretending to be our DM, over Wilshere any given saturday.
I hope this new thing clicks, but every week my faith in the manager’s judgment regarding the best personnel for the first 11 is going down.

DR

I’ll be honest, I was worried when he was at United as I thought that if he got a few goals he would take off and be a beast, happy he seems to be doing it here instead. We get Welbeck and United get another striker approaching the end of his prime with knackered kness, seems fair.

Arsepedant

I was at the match when TGSTEL scored his hat trick, my first and so far only CL game. I had five quid on Arsenal to win 4-0 and Bendtner to score first at 120/1. Would have paid for my whole trip, flights, hotel, meals, beer, and all, if that nutbar hadn’t scored the injury time penalty to make it 5-0.

Arsenalman29

I won €750 one time on a €10 bet at 75/1 for Rvp (cunt) to score first and Arsenal to win 4-0. Vs Porto. Adebawhore scored the 4th goal (penalty) on like the 70th minute. And Arsenal were doing attack after attack playing amazing. Hit the post etc etc..(phew) I swear it was the longest 20 odd minutes of my life, and the only time i ever wanted Arsenal to not score haha Needless to say, i could have filled a bath with sweat on the final whistle lol And it was the day after my Birthday. I was chuffed,… Read more »

He really is the striker we need. He’ll keep improving and bettering his technique. What an absolute steal of a transfer!

goonytunes

now we have solved the striker problem with Wele, feel we just need an imposing CDM and we are there. Issaga Diallo would be my choice, fucking class he is

Man Manny

The journos who criticised Arsene for buying Welbeck when Balotelli waa available for the same amount are already looking very stupid. Oh well; Giroud has more than his injury to worry about. This can only bode well for the club as Giroud will fight tooth and nail to get back his place. This fight will be spelt: GOALS. Happy for Welbeck…his hour of vindication has come. It is not difficult to see that Sanchez, Ozil, Carzola, Wilshere, Ramsey and Ox behind him is miles in quality compared to Carrick, Fletcher, Cleverly, Anderson, Mata etc. He will have chances aplenty. Good… Read more »

It’s even better considering each has a different style. Teams that park the bus *cough* Spuds *cough* Giroud starts and Welbeck comes on later and vice versa with others. Giroud has always performed well off the bench as well. Feel so positive! COYG!!!

Neil #2

* spelled

but to the point, Giroud and Wellbeck are different players. Not so much a competition as depth and versatility.

DR

Spelt is an older spelling, but it checks out.

Az Ahmed

Spelled is more common in America. Spelt in Britain. Seeing as English originates from England, spelt should be more correct, although spelled acceptable.

What a grammar school education will get you, ey?

Lekula omar steven

I hope he will not cheat us like Arshavin in the game ended 4-4 against Liverpool.

Az Ahmed

4231 against Villa, we hammer them inside of three minutes. 4141 against Spuds, we barely scrape a draw. 4231 against Galatasaray, we hammer them 4-1. Surely the best formation is 3-5-2?

I AM ARSENAL

#pace Welbeck has surprised me. Hate to admit it but he was well drilled at Man u. He is a gifted footballer and has fitted in well with the teams style of play, which is one of the most difficult especially being new. You could say he has shown us more than what he showed at Man united already. His Overall game is very good. Finishing is/WAS his only problem. Working with Wenger and BETTER PLAYERS at Arsenal..The guy has the potential to become a star. Again #Pace no disrespect to Giroud but its been so long. Him and Giroud… Read more »

Danny Welbeck Arsenals 23.
Great hatrick.
Thank you very much you manc mugs.

timmytimtimothy

It might be too early to say that A LOT of pundits, media and fans (ours included) are eating a big old serving of humble pie right now, but they’re certainly waiting in line at the bakery.

Please turn up this weekend lads!

#HateChelsea

Phil

Thank you Louis Van Gaal for selling Welbz to us!!! Hooray!!

Goooooooal

Galatasaray played 3 at the back in the first half and we ripped them a new one can’t wait to face Manure when the papermache “genius” has them playing 3 at the back and hopefully we rip into them

TnGunner

Beautiful game tonight.. 4 2 3 1 …it’s our bread and butter, please keep this formation from here on out…I rely feel we have a special team that’s really starting to click…get our boys healthy for rotations sake and we can fight on all trophy fronts! Bring on chelski, I hope we crush maureen in the bridge! COYG!!

deji

Let’s face it, when it comes to mourinho and wenger, the smart money will always be on the pompous one. it is in no way a reflection of how good wenger is, its just that mourinho has a “win at all cost” attitude.

Come sunday, we’ll still get beaten by maybe 3 goals. because, we’ll use a 4-1-4-1 formation, play ozil on the left and get kicked all over the pitch (and the ref wont do a damn tin abt it).

Phil

Welé!

Chelsea the new Stoke

Bring on Chelsea!! Can’t wait to see Danny leave JT in the dust.

whatever

i am starting to drool at the possibility of this 4-1-4-1 line up
santi is absolutely stunning for this team in the way he makes up for everyone’s deficiencies and makes ozil a much much better presence…..and with alexis and ox/walcott for pace and wele to play the cherry on top, its quiet juicy…..if we can land bender, this formation is goin to kick ass.

Rodrick

If we played defenses that old and slow every week he’d score 30 goals a season, easy #welbz

fresh prince

I can’t remember many pundits saying arsenal shouldn’t buy welbeck. Was mostly the fans who now seem to pretend that they knew he was great all along. The thread where his signing was confirmed just had me and a couple of others who thought he’d be a great signing, everyone else was pissed off. The pundits, well carragher and Neville both thought he’d do well.

I’d like to see the same line up against Chelsea as everyone bar Cheney played well but…. Its a bit too open.

kafka

Wenger usually does not criticize his players specifically, so it was a surprise to see that he put down the penalty not to sczeszny running out, but to Sanchez losing the ball. I found it odd when Sanchez was not in the starting line up for Spurs (so did arseblogger and many others I’m sure; the most combative guy in the team in the forward line, and its the NLD), and now this. Paranoid, yes, and I know he has his favorites, our GK being one of them. But that was still odd to criticize Sanchez. Maybe only nice guys… Read more »

Not to dampen spirits or anything. But I get the impression Wenger is still a bit cool on having welbeck as a signing. I don’t know what it is specifically, maybe because he didn’t really want to sign him? Regardless, welbeck rocked last night. I especially loved one chance where he went round two while running the length of the pitch. Its a shame he didn’t get a goal there to credit his efforts, but wow, please keep it up Danny. I hope Alexis’ effort to hound the opposition at all times starts rubbing off on others too. He was… Read more »

As a side note, Sczc needs to grow up a bit. He has proper competition now and part of me hopes Ospina plays at the weekend.

santori

FANTASTIC He is getting into gear sooner than expected and really reaping the benefits of opportunity at Arsenal. We will reap his. We’ve needed this sort of pace up top on apex for a very long time now. I don’t see it as comparative to Giroud. They offer different approaches. But the speed that we can now prosecute in attack is very refreshing indeed. Bear in mind as well we have midfield in good gear despite media manufactured ‘injury crisis’ Whilst Ozil is better played through middle, in reality, we have 4 players who are extremely flexible in Santi, Ozil,… Read more »

deji

it is not moot where he starts because, he plays better when started in the middle and he doesnt necessarily have the job of tracking back.

Welbeck age 21 sees a RVP best player in the league pitching up at ManUnited. He had dominated for Arsenal, and the fans would sing, “He scores when he wants”. Now 2 years down the line, RVP is not playing in Europe, he’s bashing around in the underworld that is bottom half EPL football; whilst Danny Welbeck is scoring hattricks and getting sung RVP’s old song! Love it. I always knew he was class. I hated that quality finish he scored against us in the league. Always thought he was a great player. He’s got the absolute perfect environment that… Read more »

Welbeck is the sixth british player to score a hatrick in clge game, the goals where immense yeah, some surprises from afc team pity for sczny card the flares on the pitch coyg.

And the third player in the arsenal fc team to score a clge hatrick not forgetting titi and anelka.

Arsepedant

TGSTEL, I believe, not Anelka.

Rich

I went to watch Utd play Sydney FC in Sydney and booed that Dutch twat for the entirety of his warm up whilst I was in the Utd end, I had $20 on Utd 5-1 at 23/1 and he came on and scored the fith Utd goal to make it 5-1 and then missed a sitter to make it six, I continued to boo him and call him every name under the sun, it was a successful day.

Mach iii

At least everyone associated with the club got to watch Welbeck score a hattrick in the champions league! Beat everyone to it!

Mach iii

Associated with ManUnited.
