Wilshere may require ankle surgery

Arsenal fear Jack Wilshere could require surgery to fix the ankle ligament damage he sustained last weekend – and if that is the case he could be missing for three months or more.

Arsene Wenger admitted his concern about the injury today and told the press, “It does not look good. There is no bone damage; we knew that straightaway after the game but there is ligament damage.”

While some will criticise Wilshere for being injury prone, it’s been overlooked by most people that he was taken out by a bad challenge by United youngster Paddy McNair. It was late and although the Arsenal midfielder overcooked the move that led to the foul, that he didn’t even get a free kick for such a nasty tackle is hard to credit (then again Mike Dean did allow him to stay on the pitch after his Fellaini nonsense).

The Arsenal manager was critical of the challenge but said it was not borne out of malice, rather inexperience.

“I don’t think it was a tackle with the desire to hurt,” said Wenger. “I think he went for the ball but it was a late tackle, a tackle which a young player can do. It was a bad foul.

“The tackle caught him from the side, just when Jack had moved the ball forwards too much. When he dived to make the pass, McNair came in to make the tackle and took him from the back and the side. When you see the picture, it is very bad.”

Let’s hope it doesn’t come to surgery, but even without an operation Jack is likely to be out of action until well into the new year.

Meanwhile, Danny Welbeck is a doubt for tomorrow’s game with a knee problem, which will give the manager a decision to make about who starts as the main striker.

Olivier Giroud is ineligible and Lukas Podolski has only been used in times of real desperation in that position. The German may get a start on the left with Alexis deployed up front.

*puts up umbrella*

It never rains, but it pours….

Ultimate Gooner

When it rains, it floods.

alexisgotbooty

well shit

Alexstratz

So it’s better to have an inexperienced defender in the PL because he’s dumb enough to make a bad challenge, break someone’s ankle, and run away completely unpunished. A seasoned defender wouldn’t have gone for the tackle, because he’s too experienced, so he’s less useful than the young defender in this case. Football logic.

Andy Mack

It depends upon the team and the ref involved.

TheRealJenkoooooo

Lol. @Alexstratz What on earth are you on about and whats your point?

onvm

Ramsey really has to stop fucking around and get back to the rambo of last season.

pi

despite moments of inaccuracy he’s had a great season so far.. this is a big blow

arsenalista

it really is. was doing well for england too.

Sean

why is Giroud ineligible?

ARiddlingName

Wasn’t registered as he would have taken up a squad spot for no reason as he was expected to be injured.

T-H

I had quite some discussion with the network on this one. I concede that this was due to a bad challenge from a ManU c-*BONK*. But Wilshere is just now a wise player in any aspect. He’s known to throw himself head first (no, not really, because then nothing serious could get hurt) into challenges and have no regard for his own health. Though it at face value seems heroic, it’s actually incredible selfish as he quite often end up injuring himself. Now. This injury is not of that sort, but is *SO* frustrating because a) he was actually showing… Read more »

Fireman Sam

Heart goes out to you Jack. Get better soon son.

Bkgooner

Bring on Sanogoal!!!
Welbeck had his chance, he ain’t ready. The young Frenchman is ready, and he’ll score. COYG!

Wenger's coat zipper

Sanogo couldn’t score with a paid hooker!

MPLS

Good. We need his concentration on the pitch.

Arsepedant

Well, we all saw what the hookers did to Giroud’s game last season.

spinner

Sanago is shite. Only a fool would agree that he is good enough for Arsenal FC, a club that is London’s finest, draped in glorious history which should have aspirations to win Europe’s top competition every season.
Sanago? Don’t make me laugh.

Man like Ozil

Just when he was getting a good run of games… Fuck sake. There’s unlucky, then there’s this. Poor guy.

Rdent gunner

Good run of games?… Really?

Bob's Mexican Cousin

At this rate, Steve Bould is going to have to make a comeback.

Geefive

aaaaaaand there it is. sigh.

Arseblood

Wilshere has so many ankle problems….I’m no Dr….but he walks and runs on the ‘outside’ of his feet. He has a physical abnormality where his posture is not of a top sportsman, I’m afraid.
He will have ankle injuries for his entire (short) career.
It’s obvious….and Arsenal would be mad to give him a huge new contract. Sad, but true.

Yank Me

This injury has nothing to do with his injury history. Look at what happened:
http://arsenalist.com/f/2014-15/arsenal-vs-man-utd/wilshere-injured-not-good.html
That would injury anyone.

Yank Me

edit: injure anyone

assistantref

It would, but the reason it happens to him so much is that he has this bad habit of waiting until the very last second to release the ball, guaranteeing he’ll get taken out if someone tries to tackle him.

It’s not how he runs it’s how he plays the game.

Mesut Aussie

Agree. As an attacker coming from deep, his aim is to put the defender in two minds and either draw the defence in to the challenge and release his attacking colleagues or pounce on a hesitant defender and skip straight past. As a consequence half the time he gets polaxed. He needs to learn that he’s not bullet proof and stop taking it to the nth degree. Don’t get bitter, get better…

loose_cannon

If refs called more fouls against it, the defenders would have to stop. If there’s one player in the world that needs protection from refs, it’s Jack

Mr. White

I don’t know if it’s really this guys luck or him not learning from his mistakes. I’m sure he knew he would get the ball ahead of McNair and maybe not 100% but I’m sure he knew he will get a kick from him but still put his foot out there for him to just clobber it. It’s happened in the past where he’s ran the ball too far but manages to get to the ball ahead of the players but everytime, they catch him on his ankles. He needs to learn that if he’s ran the ball too far… Read more »

mersons coke dealer

I worry that we’ll never get to see the best of Jack because he’s so fucking injury prone. Every time he goes down holding that ankle I have a little heart attack.

Come on Jack, stop being a celebrity and realise your potential.

spinner

Probably didn’t help his ankle too much by making him to play on after he signalled he needed to be subbed.
Brainless move.

GoonerN16

Exactly, I couldnt understand why he was not taken off, immediately. For his own protection.

SDB

i don’t understand why people think jack has had a good run of games. he doesn’t score. he doesn’t assist. team scores more when he’s not on the field. team concedes less when he’s not on the field. team wins more when he’s not on the field. the refs don’t like him so he never gets a call in his favour (if that had been hazard being pushed over in the man u box last weekend the ref would’ve pointed to the penalty spot without hesitation). really – what’s the fascination with this guy aside from one great performance against… Read more »

loose_cannon

Erm, compare how we played against United before his injury and then after. That’s what he does for the team

John Dale

What a load of bollocks! I hate it when people make such inane blanket comments without any proper reference or actually observing the player, the games he’s played in and how’s he’s played or impacted those games.

Stupid stats about how we’ve lost more all because of ONE midfield player? Really?? Without any consideration for the teams faced in those matches, the overall performance of the ENTIRE team and worse case, whether Jack was directly cupable for all the goals leading to those losses?? No. We definitely lost all those matches just because of Jack. Idiotic nonsense.

loose_cannon

THANK YOU! I really do wonder about some of our fans…

Iceman

Or we could play Santi on the left and Alexis through the middle. That way Arsene wont have to pick Podolski or Rosicky. Ho hum.

IAM ARSENAL

Feel sorry for the lad.. But the majority of Wilshere’s injuries are self inflicted from holding on to the ball too long. Case in point against Man u. He had three runners, rather than release one, he decided to drive, which was a good run thanr released too late and drew a late challenge on his outstreched ankle. You would think that he would have learned by now.

assistantref

Yep, he does it over and over again. For all those articles at the start of the season about how Sanchez was holding onto the ball for too long Jack is as big a culprit of that as you’ll find and he ends up getting hurt over and over by waiting till too late to release it.

Arsene's Apologist

You arrested equivocating here and doing both a disservice. Alexis holds onto it too long meaning he doesn’t find the right pass quickly enough and so dribbles too much. Jack holds onto it meaning he leaves himself open to being crunched. Both are leaning into their strengths when doing it (Alexis on the ball and Jack running one-twos), but they aren’t the same thing at all and are hurtful for different reasons.

Arsene's Apologist

*are equivocating. Damn Siri.

I just don't know

Unfortunate injury but its caused by his eagerness to hold on to the ball for an age. Besides he shouldn’t be in the starting XI anyway.

Yank Me

Wow! It’s great to see people who appreciate Jack’s injury. With supporters like these…

Goonerblood

My anger just builds but I agree this was more of a bad fall than a “injury prone” thing. I saw the replay and feel anyone could of got the same fate as jack. Just shows our season so far…. Glad giroud is back on the upside.

rogue teller

Welbeck out is a big chance for one of rosicky or Campbell.

Mach III

We should offer Wilshere, Ramsey, Cazorla, and 40 million for Fabregas.

Mach III

Though really unreasonable. I can’t see them selling him for anything less than 60 million. He’s a 1 in a billion. The other factor is that Ramsey, Wilshere, and Cazorla would struggle to make the bench.

loose_cannon

….Or we could not do that incredibly silly thing. Just sayin

Crew

it’s Rambo time! so sad for Jack but maybe Ramsey will get back to last years form. he always seems to play good when Jack is not playing.

Karl

The old saying you can be certain of two things, death and taxes. There should now be a third thing, Arsenal picking up a serious injury in every game they play!! It is no coincidence either that the current team flying high at the moment in the league, is also the team with the least amount of injuries of any club in the league.

Mach III

This was the year where Cesc was going to come home. Wenger changed destiny and ruined the soul of football. Wenger out. Cesc in. Should be no matter the cost to bring him back.
Arteta, Wilshere, Ramsey. None of them can pass like Cesc.

We would have won the league with him. Instead we losing to ManU in a mid table show down.

santori

Cesc is working out at Chelsea bc of the composition of the rest of the team. Jose has filled in missing pieces. It may not necessarily be the case if he was back at Arsenal.

Plus we have too many options in midfield to pay for another creator when Ozil is played wide.

It would also distract us further from getting the player we truly need, a Cback to strengthen us.

enigma106

It’s unfortunate to see Wilshere suffer so much injuries but he tends to hold onto the ball far too long. That way he invites a tackle to himself.

I wish him a speedy recovery. With Ozil and no Wilshere out, our resources in central midfield are decreasing. I hope Ramsey steps up his game now.

santori

We have plenty of options in midfield.

Ramsey will step in and hopefully step up.

But there is also Rosicky, Santi, Ox with Campbell and Podolski options out wide (+ Walcott when he returns)

It is the one area where we have substantial depth.

EhhIForget

Why do we have to just accept that we get all the injuries?! It’s an absolute joke! There must be a reason…why can’t they do anything to prevent this? It can’t be bad luck cos its such a regular occurance for arsenal to have a section of their first team injured! So bloody frustrating! Having said that wouldn’t blame wilshere on this one it was mistimed…his ankles will be made of glass by the end of his career!

Lindhe

Fuck this season, would have been such a happier human being if i didn’t love Arsenal.

Chilly

Why play Wilshere in a more advanced role when a: when he plays in the deeper role he can see the game in front of him and doesn’t run into tackles every 2 minutes and he actually might finish the 90 minutes (evidenced by his game with England against Slovenia) b: he can pick out runners with pace from distance (again his assist in the Slovenia game) giving us more variety in attack as opposed to the current Arteta based model of football where we pass to the nearest open man and are therefore incredibly slow on the attack when… Read more »

santori

He doesn’t play in a more advance role.

When deployed in concert with Ramsey, both players are suppose to take turns going forward or shielding with Arteta. That is why 4-1-4-1 and 4-2-3-1 is moot bc it depends on where the emphasis is placed. In this case, we play with two link men in midfield.

We got carried away when a goal down. Prior to that we had no issue dominating midfield.

Had instructions been issued from the bench to carry caution going forward, we may have not leaked the second (Per was at fault for being too committed forward)

DB10**

Thats bad. Hope he makes it in time to model next year’s kit and fifa 15.

santori

Chronic. I hope he doesn’t get a case of Diabytis. People like to criticise jack, yes he should have finished that chance. But overall, he played better than most of the team (bar Arteta, Alexis and Ox) by constantly driving forward and creating chances. We had no problem dominating midfield. It was our management of details at the back that was our undoing. Chambers should have got closer to Young and Gibbs/Szsc mis/non communicated. The other goal was Per’s fault being so high up and in part Wenger for not issuing relevant instructions from the bench when we had several… Read more »
