Sanchez or Cazorla? How about both?

Cazorla was the star of Arsenal’s rather tepid performance against Liverpool but today was undoubtedly Sanchez’ match:

-Took 5 of Arsenal’s 15 shots, created 5 shots for teammates, and all total, Sanchez created or shot 10/15 of Arsenal’s shots.
– He also had a whopping 11/16 dribbles, 4/7 of those were in the QPR final third and was 7/9 in all other areas of the pitch and he was fouled 4 times (that were called) and earned the penalty, took the penalty, and missed.
– Was also dispossessed 4 times and had an absurdly low 67% passing rate (28/42) misplacing 14 passes.

Where Sanchez starred up front, the diminutive Spaniard played a more reserved role, was second on Arsenal in ball recoveries (10 behind Rosicky), led Arsenal in tackles with 3/4 (Rosicky was 3/3), and tied with Per, Flamini, and Gibbs to lead Arsenal with 3 interceptions. He even had two clearances!

What’s extra encouraging is that of the last 8 Arsenal goals (in League play) Sanchez and Cazorla have scored or assisted on 6 of them. And there was even one goal which Cazorla passed to Sanchez.

I love the way these two players are playing right now.

Santi for DM 😉

Don

Onouha is a thundercunt.

vin_unleaded

And a cock juggling one at that!!!

Andrew

Santi is playing like a mixture of Xavi and Alonso

goonerbynature

The numbers don’t reveal how good Santi is at keeping the ball in really tight spaces when we’re soakiup the pressure near the end of a game, and then finding a pass. He was excellent in the latter stages yesterday.

Topgooner

The way he effortlessly moves the ball from one foot to the other to skip past a man in a pressure situation really is something of immense beauty. ooohh santi cazorla! Unbelievably good to have our smiling spaniard back on form 🙂

Positive Gooner

The way Santi wriggles into space in those situations is probably my favourite thing in football at the moment. Second only to a Rosicky outside-of-the-boot.

The good old BTN way of reporting is back

This is apropos of nothing, but Coquelin looks like an elf with that haircut and his pointy ears.

Man Manny

2. The number of goals scored by Arsenal today.
1. The number scored by QPR.
3. Points given to Arsenal

After those three, I can live with the rest.

Love your analysis as always and totally agree with you.
Santi has been excellent in the last few weeks (those two chips against Newcastle still fresh on my mind). Does anyone know why he didn’t take the spot kick?

Would’ve loved to see more numbers on Rosicky… he did seem to have excellent ones as well if Santi was trailing him 😉 and I love little Mozart.

kaius

Good point about Santi. After his last beauty he deserves to be on pen duty until he misses one!

excuse me mr blogs, but could you inform me as to what percentage of the cavani-in-january-for-50-million-pounds rumours are total bullshit? i thought it sounded a bit far fetched but literally every single gossip rag is spinning the story. also, pods to inter…. a penny for your thoughts?

arseblog

I would say 100%

nevilleneville

It’s so much bullshit it’s the only time 110% might be an actual thing.

I don’t even see Cavani as a super good buy.

Great selection of stats as always. santi’s stats are very interesting, confirming the all-action kind of performance he put in today. but it seems to me that as our primary playmaker he needs to “encourage” better use of the width of the field, not just from his himself obviously, but from the full-backs for example. despite our good possession stats, we’re not seeing enough combination work in wide attacking positions which is so good at unlocking defences. Gibb’s assist was one of those rare effective moments we should be attempting more often. After 45 minutes of a pretty good performance… Read more »

DFS

Agree with the lack of width – I thought it obvious yesterday. It seems to be a regular problem with our play which ends up way too narrow for much of the game. The excellent tactical breakdown last week detailed how Arsenal stretch a team from top to bottom, giving Arsenal loads of possession, but it’s not effective possession. We then in turn regularly get run over when the opposition play with pace and spread the play horizontally. Something which was seen in a few games was a clever chipped pass over organized defenses which had pushed higher up the… Read more »

Big L HoP

How many teams actually play a high line against Arsenal? Springing a pacey player with a through ball is not a ground breaking concept, but obviously requires space in behind for them to run on to and the player to make that pass. You think Wenger wouldn’t love that?

DFS

It was a very distinctive type of pass – not a through ball. It was a lobbed floating ball over the last defender. It stuck out as being something which looked as though it had been worked on specifically (I mentioned training ground) because so many teams know when they organize at the back Arsenal can get way too narrow and attempt to tiki taka it through the middle. This bluntness has been discussed endlessly before (and was a key point of the tactical analysis I referred to). “You think Wenger wouldn’t love that?” … you say this as though… Read more »

cavani for 50 mill in jan… any substance whatsoever or total bullshit? i laughed at first but its been reported like a done deal in a whole host of gossip rags. someone pour cold water on this before im struck down by a case of transfer blue balls unlike anything seen since higuain decided to slum it in naples.

dennisthemenace

i sincerely apologize for this almunia-esque fuck up. my previous post didnt immediately appear in the forum.

‘6 – The last 6 red cards have been given to Gibbs…’ I was shocked after reading that line. Thought you were Marriner in disguise!

Didn’t we get his red card overturned?

glory hunter

Debuchy still undefeated in his Arsenal career, long may it continue.

how does ozil fit back in without curtailing carzola’s impact?

seems wenger really tried to accommodate more of his cmf at the beginning of the season using 4-1-4-1, but it really didn’t work… so does carzola lose his place? does he go out wide?

and is anyone else concerned by the fact that ozil was playing really, really badly before his injury? can someone cheer me up and give evidence that shows he’ll be better when he comes back?

WengersNoseHair

Well you are talking utter rubbish. Ozil was the best passer in the league last season.
http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/news/news/2014-15/oct/opta-blog-on-true-pass-masters.html

Personally, I could see Cazorla playing at CM while Ozil plays at ACM, i.e. Cazorla in Ramsey’s position, behind Ozil, but of course that’s Wenger’s problem, and competition for places is a nice problem to have etc.

drew

I think Ozil was struggling from World Cup hangover. He’s not the most physically robust, and having no break wore him down. In a world where Ozil is a tremendous Passer and Sanchez is a wonderful dribbler, the potential options for breaking down defenses is an exciting prospect.

SDB

ozil wasn’t playing badly before he was injured, he was being played out of position to accommodate jack. the games ozil played as a number 10 we destroyed galatasary and aston villa. how good was ramsey when he played on the left? oh yeah right, he was being booed off the field. stop blaming ozil – it was wenger’s decision to play him out of position so that his favourite boy jack could play in the middle. which was ridiculous and is the reason we dropped so many points early in the season.

My Free Kick

Hope springs eternal.
