Campbell signs new deal before Villarreal loan

Arsenal have confirmed that Joel Campbell signed a new contract at the Emirates before joining Villarreal on loan for the rest of the season.

The 22-year-old Costa Rica international would have been out of contract at the end of next season but has seemingly done enough to persuade Arsene Wenger he still has a longer term future at the club.

Either that or we’re eager to protect our investment in case Campbell goes full-Messi in La Liga. The length of the deal hasn’t been made public.

Campbell, who has already played in Spain for Real Betis, could make his debut for his new club tomorrow night haveing been included in the Villarreal squad to face Getafe in their Copa del Rey quarter-final at the Alfonso Perez.

He’s a really nice, honest chap who seems like all he really wants is to play for Arsenal. It’s a massive shame that his ability seems to fall a little short. Glad we gave him a bit more time. Best of luck in Spain, Joel!

Proff Gooner

I think he might have been overwhelmed training with Sanchez, Ozil, Carzola, Rosicky, etc…

Glad to see players now going out but willing to come back.

Hopefully he can do as well as Jenkinson.

Forever COYG!!!

AnonymousGun

Or like Coq/Sanogo, AW knows he needs to play but cant afford to give up a spot in his well gelled attacking force.

Santi 31 next year, TRock 35.. thats 2 free spots that needs rotation next year.

perishthethought

This young dude practically amounts to zilch; can’t score if his life depended on it, loses possession quite a bit, does not defend much, not accurate as a striker or in passing, a rather large noggin used only for selfies or hats, hah. Plainly not Arsenal material, how many years since his signing, four? What has he produced? hardly anything: 1 tally in 10 appearances or more, sell him the sooner the better, that’s what I say.

CB

Campbell’s coup.

Gooner1

Very interesting, think its a good move, if he proves himself to be good enough, he’s tied down to a contract, if not, we’ve got a good negotiating position and will get alot more money. Win-Win either way.

Perry S.

I’ve alluded to this many times in the past. We need to lock players down to new contracts when we have any sort of inkling that we may need to sell them in order to attain max value in the sale.

arsesicky

yeah I’m pretty sure that was the thinking behind offering bendtner a great contract, worked out well….

Gunner From Another Mother

Campbell is infinitely more professional than Bendtner…

Foxy

And if he turns out to be total pants then what? We have an player on big wages who no club wants to buy for a fee resulting in us loaning him a la Lord Bendtner!

GoonieGooGoo

That’s the risk you take – no risk no reward. The alternative is to let everyone’s contracts run down so they leave on a free and/or hold us at gunpoint for a new one.

Miranda

I agree, letting even kids run down their contracts can these days come back to bite you. I was thinking about Akpom this morning who’s allegedly being tapped up by Liverpool and Spurs. Must be a real dilemma for the lad, with Giroud, Welbeck, Sanchez, Walcott, Sanogo and probably now Campbell ahead of him in the pecking order, whereas at strikerless Liverpool or Spurs he could expect to walk straight into the first team. He’s got so much potential, has Akpom, and he’s been with us since he was seven. Hope he does the right thing and opts to be… Read more »

Joe

That or just a millstone nobody wants. Should have sold him in the summer.

Vishnu

Hope he goes full messi 😀
good luck joel

kebabsmasher

So 4 forwards out and 1 defender and a kid for the future in. Just hope and pray injuries or suspensions dont leave us short up front but yeah we got alexis the beast does the work of 3 mere mortals.

Yorkshire gunner

Who’s for Joel to twat the winner in the top corner in the Europa league final agaisnt that shit heap that Brendan Rodgers calls a team?

PGunner

Or the spuds, I’m easy. Though not likely either pile of shit will get that far.

SamuelAkinsolaAdebosin

I hope Akpom too will be tie down to a long term contract. I think the boss must have learnt from the unpredictability of a Gunner’s form which could suddenly rise at any time. Take for instance the suddenly uprising form of Francis Coquelin who rose from the ashes of dipped form to top form. In the case Campbell loan to Villarreal, the boss did well to have tied him down to a new contract before allowing him to leave. Even when Arsenal sell a Gunner, I think they sell him with the option to first buyback.

spinner

Akbomb – boooom!

santori

Could work both ways.

It does mean he still sees possibilities at the club.

He is still young at 22yrs+ and could well do a Coquelin.

Considering we could shift Ox into the middle to cover Rosicky should he choose to get a sunset pay check, Campbell will have a chane out wide but he will have to face Gnabry.

A successful loan spell is key.

It does us no harm if he gets regular footy and comes back into the squad in the summer a sharper player.

Cliff Bastin

Ok cool.

PGunner

This season in Spanish football I will be mostly supporting Villarreal.

We all live in a yellow submarine, a yellow submarine a yellow submarine, we all live in a yellow submarine, a yellow submarine a yellow submarine.

Mpls

Must say, this is a plot twist I did not expect- but a good one.

You could see there is something there developing when he did play, but he is still just 22, and the immediate options we have on attack right now he needs to play.

Stick a bunch in the frame Joel, and enjoy the rest of the season!

GoonerN16

Win, win…..

Man Manny

That should encourage Coquelin.

Phil

How so?

Man Manny

Campbell is even lower in the pecking order in his position than Coquelin is in his. So if Cmpbell can commit to a new deal, that should encourage him. He stands a better chance of nailing down a regular shirt than Campbell.

Jed McGowan

He has the quality to be a future first team player for gunners. Wrong choices on the pitch in the final third makes him a tad inconsistent but wherever he goes out on loan he’s a first team selection which shows he has the potential. Just hope he finally finds his best position and has a good run in spain and comes back to arsenal and hopefully get a run in the first team!

rex

I think it’s great news for us! campbell would come good in time, the loan is a win win thing for both parties!

i want to boff chuba and im not even gay

I can’t believe anyone on here really thinks he’s been given a new deal because he has a future at the club. He’s been weighed out with a big fat pile of cash and given a nice affordable buyout clause. If he ever plays for arsenal again I’ll saw my own ball bag off and eat it

Clock End Mike

I can’t remember when I last felt so good about a transfer window.

• 24-year-old Brazilian hard defender — tick
• 17-year-old Polish tall strong defensive midfielder — tick
• Promising forwards going on loan to PL and La Liga clubs — tick
• Experienced captain signs a 1-year extension (apparently) — tick

These are all forward-looking achievements. There may still be things to be done before the end of the season (Akpom?), but for now this is looking very good.

It’s an odd feeling. Quite unaccustomed.

Phil

Akpom and Coquelin need to sign da fooking tings.

Ex-Priest Tobin

Interesting that Coquelin has not signed a new contract – I don’t think he will be staying with Arsenal. It’s a shame that we’ve gotten so excited by his performances over the last few games and he’s likely to be leaving over the summer anyway.

Joe

If he stays, great. If he doesn’t then bollocks to him.

Phil

I thought he was just waiting to see how regularly he gets to play once Arteta’s back? Not sure why he’d leave at this point unless he got an offer from one of the mega rich teams, and they all seem stocked with DM’s.

GGGA

Its no problem for arsenal. If he signs then great as we get to save some money but if he did not then no problem as wenger hands will be forced to scour the market for a quality DM over the summer.

hessojay

Goodluck Joel. “We all live in a yellow submarine.” I’m supporting Villareal for the rest of the season too.
