Wenger confirms he wants “one or two” signings

Arsene Wenger has assuaged some fears that the club might be thoroughly inactive in the January transfer window by saying he’s looking to bring in “one or two” new players.

Whether this includes the imminent capture of Polish teenager Krystian Bielik remains to be seen, but after injuries to Mathieu Debuchy and Mikel Arteta more or less finished their seasons, and with the need for reinforcements obvious without that, the Arsenal manager is stepping up his search for new recruits.

Speaking to the official site, he said, “Yes we are more in the market now. We have Chambers and we have Bellerin, who is coming on well, and I want to give them a chance as well, but of course we are in the market like many other clubs.

“We work really hard morning until late night to try to get one or two players in.”

Of course that could mean Bielik + the deadline day capture of Jaques le Stump from FC Krippul, but we’ve just had a very nice orange so we’re feeling optimistic.

We’ll probably sign le Stump tomorrow.

Now I really hope someone mangles Aronautovics (?spelling) balls with some razor sharp studs. Can’t believe he’s not been retrospectively punished.

Exiledgooner

The BBC was an absolute joke over the Arsenal/Orcs game. Firstly they had a former Stoke captain on the website going on about how our players were so fragile, and that they should have a sign on their shirts saying ‘do not touch’, conveniently glossing over that both our fullbacks had nasty injuries caused by Stoke players. Then there was the commentator on Match of the Day saying the Arnautovic shove was ‘just two players coming together, nothing in it.’ Yes, nothing in an obvious shunt that left our right back needing surgery and three months out. I know a… Read more »

Dark Stein

I’ve always wondered why the hard surface around the edge of the pitch? Why not expand the grass all the way to the advertising boards. Surely landing after a shove on grass would be better than what we have there at the moment.

Oh and why didn’t MOTD2 show the build up play where Ozil did that no look flick on to the left wing?

Big Dave

I’m no expert on this but I think that in particular the BBC just like to play out some sort of narrative, basically good vs bad. More often than not the underdog is the good. In this case Stoke can do no wrong because they play a (stupid) hard-hitting game and the pundits like it because it’s a very English way of playing football (similarly, think about how fondly they speak of Big Sam or Harry Redknapp).

punter

i am not an expert on this..but i think the hard surface on the edge is more like a mowing strip you would have at your home. otherwise it would be a maintenance challenge..mundane as it sounds i think its time they re look at this. seems silly after all its a football pitch and not kensington palace gardens..

DialSquareGoon

Fuck the BBC and fuck Stoke. Who cares what they say? We played them off the park, put 3 goals in and left their supporters stranded in London.

sisypharse

That last part was brilliant, and the cherry on the sundae and icing on the cake rolled into one for me.

Yas

Actually I was a bit worried about these wild hogs and baboons running loose till late in north london

lollo

And sometimes you wonder if Alan Smith actually played for us with some of his comments when he covers our games

ooh to be

You just need to see Arnautovic’s face after the collision.. Never seen a more guilty man

DFS

This is just one of the bugging aspects…he had a patently nervous reaction after he shoved Debuchy and I pretty sure was expecting to be carded.

David

I still think DeBuchy will be back before 3 months. A shoulder injury is easier to get over for footie players. Also, that Stoke orc totally pushed him then walked away like a punk. Was it not dangerous play? Is it too late now for the FA to charge him with violent/reckless conduct?

Big game this weekend! COYG!!!

UMG

The good thing with a shoulder injury is that it shouldn’t take too long for him to be match fit again after recovering. Sometimes you see 3 month injuries end up being 4 months before the players are ready to do more than come on for 20 minutes, hopefully that won’t be the case here.

Runkeball

Agreed! May the next team that Stoke plays unleash their Hound (and his brother) and fuck Arnautgarbage up good and proper. As an extra they’re welcome to unleash them on the MOTD panel as well. For good measure.

TTT

Schneiderlin
Cáceres

ZA Gunner

Hope you’re right, but I seriously don’t think Southampton will let Schneiderlin go. They have a real shot at getting top four. Only was he’s leaving is if they get a stupid stupid stupid offer (and that won’t be from Arsene) or if he forces his way out. But he’s been at Southampton since he was 18, so I’m sure he’s as excited about seeing the club to a top four as anyone else, and it’s not like it would reduce his chances of a move to a top club in the summer… Really don’t see it happening.

Dick Swiveller

Yep, he was so excited in the summer that he accidentally sent a tweet complaining about them ruining his relationship with them.

I don’t see it happening this window, but he’ll be gone in the summer.

jack jack jack

Looks like, if anything, Schneiderlin will move in the summer. And, to be honest, in the long term I think we’d be better off getting in a real top quality player in summer than getting a make-shift DM in January.

That said, we certainly need defensive cover for the rest of the season. That Mexican fella, Hector Moreno, looks a decently Arsenesque signing, so hopefully we can get him or someone of that calibre in.

Mr Eko

Don’t get excited guys. Krystian Bielik is one.
Doubt there’ll be a two.

the only sam is nelson

Agent ITK says: It’s Frank, baby! http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/30723112

at least he’s not injured. at the moment.

*gets coat*

Matt

I’ve chosen to ignore our injury problems and desperate need for a defender, and instead focus on the fact that we will soon have Ozil, Walcott, Ramsey, Cazorla and Sanchez all on the same pitch together (if chosen)! For the time being at least. I’m trying to be positive.

SB

To be positive or realistic has now become the choice for the fan to make.

Title fight or 4th place fight.

Injuries due to lack of rotation or rotation is not possible due to injuries.

Poldi or Sanogo.

Wenger can help the positivity by addressing the issues at the back.

Goonatic

its about time the punishment should be as long as the other player is out. less of the thuggishness….

oh in an ideal world aye……

arsepedant

Yes, an aye for an aye.

The Only Olivier is Giroud

Imagine Arséne feeling optimistic because of fruit. “Look, we are active. You are welcome to spend a week with me, and you will see these special oranges we’re having. Just this morning I peeled one without even once the skin getting a little bit jaded. As for transfers, we will make a good transfer window and push for the title with Chelsea, Manchester all still having to play us”.

Trex d' Gunner

Le Stump, the tough tackling beast like DM/CB, who can snaps John Terry’s twig like legs into 50 places with a simple tackle. Sign him up Arsene

Tony Hall

As long as come Jan 31st we don’t get the all too familiar “we were looking to buy but the quality wasn’t available” line trawled out yet again.

I won’t hold my breath

Clock End Mike

But what if it’s true? Maybe that really is the case? We know quality at a realistic fee is hard to find in January.

We’ve had mixed fortunes in the past with January signings, including some quite good ones, and some that just didn’t work out:
2004: Reyes
2005: Eboue
2006: Adebayor, Diaby & Walcott
2007: Vela & Merida
2009: Arshavin
2010: Sol Campbell (short-term)
2011: Miyaichi
2012: Henry (loan)
2013: Monreal
2014: Källström (loan)

kaius

Essentially this shows we don’t spend money in January, with Monreal’s arrival being the exception over the last 6 January transfer windows. Don’t remember the summer window’s being that great either.

Last January’s may have been the most tragic and painful in that it amounted to an admission the title wasn’t our real target. Fuck January.

The Night Elf

“We work really hard morning until late night” … yet we had the apparent gaping hole in a defensive recruitment last summer .. that deserves a poo meter blogs!

Ultimate Gooner

Translation: We’ll only get Bielik.

Hope this geezer retires at the end of the season.

Dick Swiveller

He’s only 17, so it’s unlikely.

AnonymousGooner

You underestimate Arsenal’s injury record

Comedian

Ahh kids. No respect at all.

jack pitney

Seems bieliks on his way in for a medical…. cant judge until i see him but i thought wed go for someone thats ready to go like khedira i dunno le prof knows what hes doing look at kallstrom last year wenger brought him in knowing he would score that penalty in the fa cup… lol

Joel Carter

Why do people still think Khedira is a defensive midfielder? He’s not. He’s box to box.

Henry! Chance!! Goal!!!

99% of them don’t know football. They just regurgitate what they read from journalists who also don’t know football.

maddyclaires

Why does Arsene think Arteta is a defensive midfielder? He’s not. He’s not even box to box.

Dick Swiveller

I think it’s the way he sits deep, covers spaces, makes interceptions and even tackles. It’s a weird way of viewing the role, but it seemed to work last season.

Anmol

But isn’t that the point? People complain about Arteta because he is not a true DM. So why buy Khederia if he is not a true DM either? Wouldn’t we still have the same defensive issues?

Mpls

I doubt bringing in Bielik has anything to do with the current season’s needs. He’s one to develop. At 17 there is no way Wenger is thinking he’s a starter in anything but absolute emergency or as a ‘gaining experience’ sub. Does make me think Chambers is destined for primarily CB though. If we don’t bring in another DM, I guess that would mean the manager thinks we can make do with what we’ve got, for better or worse. This ManC match ought to let us know. Honestly I’m not even going to guess who we’re trying to bring in.… Read more »

Striker

Well to be fair Källström ain’t a much worse player than for instance Flamini. Sure, I do agree it was a little bit hilarious when it proved that we had bought an injured player to solve our injury crisis. But that’s Arsene’s arsenal for ya. Källström wasn’t really arsenal standard but not a bad player at all.

Runkeball

Kallstrom was a find. A strong player whose size makes him hard to bully (think Stoke cunts here) with a knack for set pieces that is missing from the team. The club that owns him does not use him so they lent him to us for nothing. So what did we do? We hardly used him and how he’s back with his club who, as far as I know, don’t use him at all.

Eboue

Ah an orange. If it was a grape, I would be worried.

How many of the 60 have you already eaten, blogs?

Greg

That’s a special orange. Can I have one?

Diaby will be lans

EDub

Krippul, eh? We seem to buy from them a lot.

So where’s Diaby these days?

David

Bielik and Diaby will be then

WizardOfOzil

Wenger shopping in Cripple Creek again no doubt this window and he wonders why we’re so cursed with injuries. Clueless.

We should be raiding Dortmund for Gundogan, Hummels and Reus.

Deano

On about signing cripples then mention three players all pretty good I’ll grant you but they have hardly kicked a ball all season. Considering the situation they are in and the fact they are still in the champions league. They will be staying in Germany at least this window.

WizardOfOzil

Yeah I know Deano, just fucking around.

Deano

Yeah did wonder. I’ve decided I’m not going to whinge, whine, scream or shout and ball this transfer window. As It is not healthy.

Kentish Gooner

Gundogan and Hummels have both been injured pretty frequently over the past two years, football genius.

Black Hei

Kids nowadays don’t understand irony

Shubham

Bring back Eboue. Season defining signing…

emmanuel

Honestly that shove on Debuchy by that aronaut man was really unnecessary when the ball was out of the pitch. that caused the injury and for me it was deliberate, because that’s how they have been taught to play against arsenal. it’s really sad that Debuchy has to go on another 3- month injury spell after just coming back from a knee injury.

GunnerDareMACEDONIA

I agree with everyone that we need CDM now, but there is no one available in January except caravalho for 30m who is not prove and cup tied. If that is the case I would wait for the summer and get schneiderlin who will make instant impact, only thing i’m sure wenger will buy is CB cover, but you better not expect someone like hummels or varane because ther is no chance either of them to be sold in January, it would be a decent cover, and i’m sure he will try to loan CDM player to cover for the… Read more »

Striker

Indeed, but Wenger’s brain will probably tell him to wait 2-3 years till Zelalem and Bielik become ready for the first team and stick with Flamini and Arteta till 2018. #WengerLogic

Gary Neville is spot on in this video explaining the current DM problem at arsenal.

Je adore le Stump!!!
Je adore d’orange magique!!!

Jerà

Comment:How good is this kid? Hes said to be already 6ft2, at 17. He’ll probably stop growing at 7foot or something.
Cesc commanded a first team place at that age and young Ox looks very powerful. Over at that other lot, Shrek was already a first teamer by 17. Fingers crossed he’s another exceptional youngster.

Anybody seen him play for club or country?

DialSquareGoon

I would definitely count Bielik as one and I suspect he will be an under-under study for the first team’s “DM” position. Therefore, Wenger’s working on a CB signing. Lets hope we pull it off…

emmanuel

only Wenger understands why he is desperately after this kid, Bielik. it may be he’s really a special talent who can be worked quickly into the first team, after all fabregas got playing for the 1st team at the age of 16 and we know how he has developed to what he is today. on the other hand we have had such failed signings like ryo maiyaki, bischoff, just to name a few.

Mpls

I understand why he’s after him. Fail to plan for the future, plan to fail in the future. We picked up Ox, Walcott, Gnabry, Bellerin, and many others younger and ‘not quite ready’. I think they’ve paid off so far.

Even when you consider the ones that didn’t work out they got great training and opportunity and with the far lower transfer fees at those ages we still financially came out ahead of just buying the most expensive fully finished players.

Samrat

Just get Schneiderlin in summer, and that player from mordor who shoved Debuchy should have been shown a red because that shoving was not only off the pitch but also off the ball incident which by law calls for a red. Stoke are really shit

Apostolos

Of course It’s going to be Bielik & a French defender from the second division in France we’ve never heard of(Or Greece because Wenger seems to rate Greek defenders).

GunnerDareMACEDONIA

yeah right, that is why i can’t remember if a greek player has played for arsenal once in history of football, but if my memory serve me right there was some greek guy in 2001-02 made one appearance for arsenal.

mraverage

It’s pretty obvious we need more than one coq to plug the holes we have in our squad. Let’s bring in that Virgin Dijk guy from Celtic. Ok, so he sounds a bit inexperienced, but he looks big and saucy.

Jon

Anyway, which defender would suit us?

Obviously must be PL proven, from a lesser team with lots of clean sheets. That leaves only Vlaar/Okore from Villa, so my best guess is Vlaar.

Striker

If Bielik is the only signing wenger makes in January then he should honestly consider to resign in may after we miss out on the ‘4th place’ due to injuries to one of our CB’s.

santori

Arteta looks crocked for longer than expected. We will likely need a DM now. His replacement should be pushed forward. Ideally we should get someone in who can cover both the priority Cback requirement and Arteta. However it may come to two players. Bielik is a possibility for the future. With Flamini and Coquelin both performing, we can afford to risk a younger player as cover. OTOH, we will need a Cback. A Per injury will be a very bad prospect for us. Hummels is a possibility depending on price. Otherwise Van Djik since he may be able to cover… Read more »

Striker

Hummels ain’t a possibility. Just drop it. He can pretty much choose between all the top clubs in Europe.. Why would he choose Arsenal? Van Dijk seems quite average to be honest.

Amit

Any actions on improving that area of the pitch. IMO patches like that should not exist at all.
Ans FUCK that CUNT of a player Aru@#%#$c..

Forfuckssake

It was my fathers funeral today. What I loved is in the eulogy everyone spoke of his passion for Arsenal and stories of going to matches. I am so proud and reminded once more what a club we support

Arsical

Amidst all the posts about whether the manager will or wont sign anyone, I find your post to be the one that has put me in a happy place. I am sorry for your loss but I am glad that your father’s passion for football and Arsenal was so defining. He will be remembered frequently and fondly by all that had the pleasure of knowing him.
We Arsebloggisters should follow your example, step back from the player transfer circus and sit back and remind ourselves how good it is to be a fan of the Arsenal.

Arsepedant

What Arsical said. Best wishes to you and your family.

spinner

Ditto. Sorry to hear of your loss but it’s pleasing to hear how Arsenal brought your father such joy.

poirobi

Get Yann M’Vila and Gourcuff! And maybe Cabaye.

OOzil

its so strange to see people wanting signings. its not like one dm and cb will change how we play. and frankly speaking if we cant win with the team we have now, one or two players wont make a difference. with the attack we have it should be ok to concede a goal or two each game.

Mpls

But a trustworthy CB sure would do a lot for resting weary legs and twanged Achilles, and when that is needed the confidence of having someone purpose built and trained for the job will go a long way. DM i’m not as stressed about.

If Wenger thinks we need one or two you know it’s serious.

palace gunner

Morr injury woes bejesus lets think yes man. C game wkend big game nice game and win v stoke coyg

Ex-Priest Tobin

May as well just wait until the summer transfer window as we aren’t winning anything this season no matter what we do.

Anonymous Physicist

Coming third (instead of fourth) for once would also help any summer business, as guaranteed champions league football is a much easier sell than probable champions league football. And considering the fact that Koscielny has a chronic injury and we’ve looked pretty shaky without him, coming fourth isn’t exactly guaranteed either. We really need some defensive stability, and for that we need an experienced central defender.

bungyjump

Typical wenger window. Old habits never die.

bungyjump

Arsene Wenger is holding us back. Enough is enough, the club will always be what comes first! Thanks for all the great memories arsene. But it is time for you to depart with arsenal at the end of the season.

anthony arsenal

He is an excellent manager he just needs to splash some cash every now and then not on players he loans out straight away

Alexstratz

One or two means one. So it’s that Bielik kid.

anthony arsenal

Henry and Campbell please only if !!!

Hademe Precious

Wenger said he is working very hard, I only pray he will not end up bringing mediocre players because when it comes to spending money,I do not trust him.
