Welbeck: quit living in the past, Marge

“In the last four years we always came out frustrated because three times we conceded a goal at home in the first 30 minutes,” said Arsene Wenger.

“That goal knocked us out. It was really tight. We have learnt from that and we can show that on Wednesday.”

It’s clear that the manager wants his team to learn the lessons of seasons gone, but Danny Welbeck says that the team can’t dwell on the past as they look to reach the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2009/10

“It is not something that comes into discussion,” he said. “You can’t be looking into the past too much about what you could have done, it is about making things right and learning from that experience and taking it into the next game.

“Once everyone’s on the pitch we’re going to give 100 per cent and give the best for the team. That’s the most important thing – once you’re on the pitch you need to do your job properly.”

Meanwhile, the Arsenal manager also played down suggestions that his team had received an ‘easy’ draw having avoided Barcelona, Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich.

“Easy is a word that you have to ban in the Champions League,” he said. “They are efficient and physically powerful. That helps them to stay in matches when they are under pressure.

“Monaco are like a reptile. They will wait for us and absorb the game ready to kill us.

“I believe we are in a better shape. I am convinced of that. We feel as a team that we are on the way up and we can use the Champions League to confirm that.

“I look around Europe today and there are 10 teams who believe they can win it.”

like a reptile…..ha

flappylegs

What was the question posed to Welbz? He seems to contradict himself in one sentence – not looking at the past but still learning from experience… Anyway who gives a shit let’s spank those tax dodging assholes (I read the guardian article about Wengers time there I never realised they were such dicks to him.)

flappylegs

Sorry was not ment to be a reply got my tabs mixed up

Dick Swiveller

I think the implication was not to focus on what you did in the past, rather than ignoring it; much like thinking ‘score’ instead of ‘don’t miss’.

flappylegs

You are right of course,i have a problem understanding implication sometimes it seems so subjective

Dick Swiveller

Much of langauge is, when you get down to it.

Le Jim

Love the reptile quote haha… Hope we have many more zoological Wengerisms to look back on a few years from now!

Rohith J

Like a reptile? Wenger actually said that?

Arsenalboy

Shame he didn’t use the reptile quote on moaninho. Pretty accurate

Springbank 1962

Comparing Mourinho to a reptile would be a misnomic affront to reptiles everywhere.

I suspect this is why Wenger declines to use the epithet.

Arsenalboy

Haha, touchè!

gar14

that would be an ecumenical matter…

fabulous

Speaking of that fucker. Here’s what he had to say bout Lego hair when Mikel did one on him, “it’s a mans game, Arsenal should stop crying.” And when Matic got a taste of a bad tackle he moans like a fucking drain asking for Barnes to be banned for 10 games. I swear I’d punch him in the face if I ever bump into him. He’s the sole reason why Chelsea has taken over from Spuds on top of my most hated club list. What an absolute fucker. But at least on the face of it we can all… Read more »

ManU is still at the top for me, but I’m with you than f-ing Mourinho brings Chelsea closer & closer to the top all the time! The fuckers.

EuripidesMac

Agreed on Mo’s the f’ers hypocrisy and Chelsea. My dislike/vilified ratings: #1 F.A./Referees, #2 Chelsea, #3 ManU, #4 Stoke…I don’t even care about Spuds in comparison with the above, they are just another team that we’re probably going to and always should beat, but a very tough opponent because they’re Po-tay-toes (you can tell I’m not a long-time Gooner, nor from North London, sorry). All that matters to me is what team Arsenal has to put up with the most foul play from. I consider the Referees the third team on the field. And the refs are consistently the second… Read more »

What’s made it worse is Sky giving him a gilded platform to opine on the subject. Don’t recall Wenger getting one when we have been wronged .

fatman

Don’t worry. Sky are laughing at him rather than moaning with him

Springbank 1962

I’d settle for an injury-free, no sendings off, no away goal conceded, no gaffs at the back, memorable night at the Emirates*, spectacular home-tie win.

Is that too much to ask?

Arseblog's Royal Falcon

An ugly old lady called Luck might think so…but that’s none of my business

Highberry

Your wish is my command said the Gooners fairy godmother followed by a slap up tea for all.

Pedant

We’d all settle for a great result with no problems.

But what would you actually settle for?

Springbank 1962

A pain-free evening leading to euphoria and a nice comfy sleep.

Highberry

I used to know a girl called Euphoria true story back in the days when parents gave their kids names like “Patience” and “Charity” she really did always lead to a nice comfy sleep but definitely not a pain free experience. Oh happy days and foggy nights

Springbank 1962

The morning after.

Don’t I feel a bit of a dick now. Should have set my bar at …

… a thumping migraine, an 8-hour trip to A&E with a friend who’d (only) sprained her ankle (running in unsuitable footwear), and a bout of self-snoring that kept waking me up with a series of explosive snorts.

Won’t make that mistake again in a hurry.

Geraldo

On the subject of Jose’s campaign” issue against Chelski, I couldn’t help myself wondering about that Matic tackle on Sanchez.
Is there a ” campaign ” to take Alexis out, on some teams agenda??
Can Mr Arseblog supply the video compilation of nasty challenges against our loved one?
Might make for interesting viewing!

Dick Swiveller

The ‘kick Arsenal off the pitch’ approach isn’t working as well as it used to, so now you need to try and injure us off the pitch (literally, in some cases), which given the way the refs let them do it seems to be working, just not on Alexis as he appears to be made of adamantium. Not to mention the hordes of pundits talking about how it’s Wilshere’s fault that he gets kicked out of matches because he moves the ball too quickly for the defenders, so he must not try any of that fancy ‘dribbling’ stuff.

realseriousgooner

Sweet X-Men reference.

OOzil

I think the only time someone can use easy ban and champions league in the same sentence is when they want to describe what happened to Arsene Wenger when he complained to the 4th official.

Fool of a Took

I´m ready for some Walcott action tonight!

I´ve got a feeling that we would do both Walcott and AFC a favour to only play Theo in home games from now on. Let Welbz run around and smash things up in away fixtures to the Stokes and Palaces of the world so we can give Theo the space he needs at the Emirates.

A bit controversial opinion, but why not?

catbiscuits

Bizarre suggestion. Walcott thrives on space to run into, which you get in away games.

gordy

Sorry but I think Theo is now the fourth best right winger/ sided attacker: Alexis, Welbeck, Ox….

WengersMagicHat

No, Walcott is better than Welbeck and the Ox for now. I believe Chamberlain have a massive potential but as things stands right now I’d say Walcott is above both of them.

Ymylei

Bull. Welbeck is a much better overall player than Walcott as it stands right now. Until Theo starts getting as clinical as he was pre-injury Welbeck is the better choice no doubt.

“Monaco are like a reptile. They will wait for us and absorb the game ready to kill us.”
– Arsene Wenger.
One of the upsides to having a french (frog) manager is he’ll know the dangers lurking in the waters of the Champions League.

I know, i know..

Highberry

Why use the word Frog?

fatman

Because his crap ‘joke’ would be even worse if he didn’t.

SB

I hope were are one of those 10. In the age old debate of consistent top 4 finish plus reaching the later stages of the cup competitions (CL, FA Cup & League Cup) against winning some Silverware (not counting the League Cup here), I’ve not been able to quite make up my mind. However in the scenario that we win the CL but finish 5th (not as the stated aim but the situation at the end of the season), today I would happily take it. It would be fun to see one or two of the Tots, Pool or the… Read more »

Why not champion league, fa cup and 3rd place all at once?

Bellerin-a

Well, I for one think we can do the business tonight. Gotta be wary as they only conceded one goal in the group stages but we’re at home and have to make it count.

Family issues going on so nice to take in a relaxing* night infront of the TV with a pizza and watch us go. And maybe a few beers if I actually drank alcohol!

*Disclaimer, nothing is ever relaxing with us!

ZA Gunner

Apparently they’ve only conceded three goals (3!!) in the last seventeen fixtures. That is a BEAST defence.

The are like George Graham Arsenal. The past couple of months has been nothing but 1-0 or 0-0.

But then the French league doesn’t have that many magicians like Ozil, Alexis & Cazorla to unlock defences… Should be a good tense game tonight!

Spooner

If I’m not paying attention when reading player quotes from Arsenal, sometimes I think it’s Wenger talking… I guess that shows how much they listen to him, IE that lots of the players start using his mannerisms.

o2ba

Monaco the absorbalovs of euro football pmsl.
COYG!

shokim

Let’s do the business against Monaco tonight! Btw the Twitter lovefest earlier between @Arsenal and @AS_Monaco really crept me out!

Btw <3 The Simpsons reference!

Ciderman

Need to put in a good win tonight – with a nice goals scored and none conceded scenario – so that we don’t have the dilemma of fa cup v champions league progression!!! Lets have both as I want to see the manure hoodoo broken BIG time!!!!

WengersMagicHat

They’ve scored 4 goals in the entire Group Stage. But they’ve also just let 1 past them. Which means they have a good defense. I cannot see us win big tonight or in the game away from home. I am confident that we will progress to the quarter finals. But it will not be easy and I don’t imagine the story will be over after the game tonight.

Xzibit

He once called Trezeguet a snake.

Gooner Reg

I believe!! COYG
