Arsene Wenger spent £30m+ on Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona last season for good reason. The Chilean international is the club’s top scorer this season, everyone loves him, and he’s just been voted Fans Player of the Year.
At his press conference today, the Arsenal manager tried to explain why he’s so popular, saying, “He has just been voted player of the year by the fans because he is very positive, who always wants to go forward, wants to hurt the opponent and he is also – what the fans like with him – a fighter.
“He is a guy who has a good combination of talent, combative aspect and fighting spirit. That is why he is liked by everybody here.”
He then went on to suggest that Sanchez shares qualities with guitar-wielding former genius Prince.
“He is too quickly upset when it doesn’t go well for him and he has to learn to be a bit more patient and not to be too quickly upset.
“Sometimes he is too demanding, he’s never satisfied. Why do we do scream at each other? This is what it sounds like, when doves cry.”
Ok, he didn’t say that last bit, but did mention that he’d been round Alexis’ house and his garden was ‘an ocean of violets in bloom’.
We can’t say for sure if his dogs, Atom and Humber, were striking curious poses, but for the sake of this piece we’ll assume they were.
