Jack Wilshere says that suggestions he should change his style of play to avoid injury would rob him of much of what makes him so effective as a player.
The England man’s most recent injury absence came when one of his trademark dribbles was ended by a nasty studs-up challenge by Man Utd’s Paddy McNair, but Wilshere says he won’t alter the way he plays.
“I have read that I need to change the way I play,” he told the Daily Mail, “not run with it as much.
“But then I wouldn’t be the player I am so I can’t do that.”
He also touched on rumours that Arsenal would countenance a sale if the price was right, with Man City rather spuriously linked with a £30m move a few weeks ago.
“‘I want Arsenal to want me,” he said. “So if they didn’t want me, it would hurt. It would be strange playing for another club. I went to Bolton on loan and that was strange.
“You can’t stop the speculation or do anything about it. I have not spoken to the boss about it at all. He has not mentioned it to me. I’ve not mentioned anything to him.
“At the moment, I need to get back in the team. The speculation about my future started when I was injured. You just want to get back out there and get back to what you love doing and just concentrate on that.”
Wilshere is likely to start Arsenal’s final Premier League game of the season this afternoon against West Brom. Whether he can do enough to secure a place for the cup final remains to be seen.
As for Arsenal selling him this summer, it’s unlikely to be on the agenda. Arsene Wenger has been keen to give Wilshere playing time, even playing him out of position to fit him in the team, not the actions of a manager who is ready to move a player on.
His future is at arsenal. Although we are stocked up well in the position he plays, so he’s not going to play as regularly as he would like. Imo he should use this time to build up his fitness and concentrate on going through the next season without any major injury.
You know that’s one thing that sets us apart from other clubs. We’ve got players like Jack who just love the club and the fans.
Wilshere should be our #10 like he was always intended to be.
Oh, yes, it was a great success at the start of the season when Wenger put JW as n°10… The guy created nothing, didn’t goal, didn’t assist… Great success… But if you want the 4-5th place, yes, JW as n°10 is enough.
Except for the goal and assist against Man City right? And the assist for Alexis against Besiktas right?
Why don’t you fuck off and go watch a Sp*rs game you piece of shit.
He’ll be the replacement for cazorla over the coming years
‘…didn’t goal’??
Jack is our Gerrard. A captain in waiting. He plays for the club he loves and will hopefully continue to do so for many years to come.
I have a feeling Ramsey will be our next captain
That’d be nice, but Rambo’s not really the leader-type of midfielder I would put as captain. He just seems a bit unassuming and mild off the pitch (which I think was the reason Coleman took the armband off of him for Wales). He’s a remarkable player but not a captain in my eyes.
If that’s so then let’s hope that he doesn’t slip up when we are going for the title.
Wilshere shouldn’t have to change his game, what he does is great. Bursting through the lines. And driving the team forward. Not afraid of the ball. The FA, and refs should be protecting players like Jack. They say the same of Hazard, of Ronaldo. Keep doing what you do mate, you will be an Arsenal legend. COYG
100% agree. The useless defenders should learn how to tackle and play better.
He will be one of our best in the next few years. I can’t forget how good he was when he first broke into the team.
Transfer speculation is invariably bollocks (99 times out a hundred) and for our own players destabilising.
Jack has looked sharp and energetic since coming back. I’d love to see him step up and be a regular, though needs no injuries and he is very left footed so requires enough other skills to be able to cope with that. Lots of good memories – the Norwich goal and even one when he was 16, curled into the top corner for a youth team.
Only 23, give him time and he will keep improving.
What a player jack could be if he wasnt so injury prone. Cant see him going to another club. He could easily be our future captain, if he stays fit of course.
What sickened me was how some really fickle fans turned on him and suddenly he was their latest scapegoat. Even this season he was motm against city and was our best player against united till he got done by a really late poor challenge that never got mentioned, it all became about Jack being injury prone. It’s a fucking joke sometimes.
Like Xavi, I think Jack could be a 1 club player. Loves Arsenal through and through
Ok, maybe not Xavi as he’s going abroad
Totti. Playing for one club and scoring against city well into his 30s.
Barcelona’s quite a different system right now though, players like Xavi, Iniesta, Puyol, Pedro, Messi and Busquets either have stayed or will stay there for their entire careers because it’s normal for them. So much respect for Xavi but if Jack stayed I think it would be more of an achievement in a time where staying at Arsenal really isn’t the done thing. ThurrkeyonRye is probably closer with Totti, because Roma is more of a similar club to Arsenal, and Totti has the personality more similar to Jack. We’ve missed a player like that for a long time. I’m still… Read more »
The Paddy McNair challenge was a red card offence and I’m still astonished that, not only was it not even called a foul by the ref, but not one pundit or sports page mentioned how terrible it was.
Also there should have been a retrospective punishment afterwards as although it wasn’t malicious, it was clearly reckless and a potential career ender.
I just don’t get it.
He’s a good player but we need to stop changing the line up to accomodate him. It’s hurting the team.
All those players stayed at Barcelona because they were winning. If we had dominated for much of the last ten years we wouldn’t have lost half the players we did. We have a great team, who need a couple of top quality additions, but need to really push for prem and champs league titles, otherwise I fear players like Rambo, jack, mesut and Sanchez will be looking for moves in a couple of seasons.
As much as we love every single player in the squad. It’s time for wenger to offload some midfielders in our squad so that the ones remaining have decent playing time. I really hope wilshere and stay back with us for a really long time.
Thighs.
