It wasn’t the best performance overall defensively, but a second look at Gabriel’s performance shows the Brazilian did well.

It wasn’t the best performance mainly because of Chambers. We were lucky not to lose the game already in the first half. We badly need a new CD and to send Calum out on loan for him to get regular playing minutes.
I dunno if you heard Gary Neville’s comments after the game but he was spot on. Chambers was the weak link last night BUT that can’t be completely down to him. He looked super rusty as you would when you haven’t played a competitive game for god knows how long. A loan back to Southampton would have been ideal for him this season. As soon as Mert/Kosc are back he will be back to sitting on the bench and then when called upon again he will look rusty and off form
Bellerin had a horrible performance or two last year, look how that turned out. People are too quick to make knee jerk reactions to everything. If you have one bad game you’re shit. If you one good game you’re world class
We cannot afford experiments. Not anymore. Every single player on the bench should be ready to step in and deliver a proper performance. Just like Gabriel. That’s why the best option for Calum is a loan spell. Arsene must be ruthless.
Let’s assume you’re right and Chambers should go out on loan. Presumably, such a loan would have happened three or four weeks ago. That would have left us yesterday with Gabriel and … Debuchy? Monreal (with Gibbs at LB)? 17-year-old wunderkind Ima Greatback from the youth squad?
On second thoughts, let’s not assume you’re right.
greatstuff, i think he can form a formidable partnership with Koscielny, once the BFG ages off
Goodfella…
For me, Koscielny – Gabriel would be really interesting.. Both quick, good defensively and secure enough on the ball. Mert is awesome but too slow against some teams, Chambers is probably the future but he needs a loanspell to gain experience.
To be fair to Callum Chambers, he couldn’t have had much notice that he was playing. Gabriel was class, along with Coq and Cech.
He can cut it no doubt and hope and pray it clicks with Kos. A definite upgrade on mertslacker who cant even use the main obvious advantage he has over almost all.
Oh come off it, Mertesacker wins more than his fair share of aerial battles, think back to the FA Cup final, who was it keeping Benteke in his pocket any time the ball got crossed in or lumped up. Brings a lot to our game, so calm on the ball, great passer who can bypass the midfield, reads the game excellently, tackles well & like i said wins more than his fair share in the air. Long live our BFG!!!
Although i wouldn’t mind seeing Gabriel & Kosc together on a regular basis
And if he had pace he would be ok, like giroud.
Alexis for striker!!
How quick is Gabriel?? Would like to see a race between him and kosc. If we could partner the two of them we could have an incredible combination. Well done Gabby ?
Greatstuff, the Brazilian has quick feet.i think he can form a formidable partnership with Koscielny once Mertasacker ages
I thought he was MOTM on first viewing anyway. Did the work of two centre-backs last night and should start next week regardless of who’s fit.
Gabriel did well yesterday but due to the Chambers factor he looked average. But people shouldn’t forget Chambers is our 4th CB and he can still improve.
Promote him to the first team already.
The starting line up i mean.
Gabriel played exceptionally, but after seeing what happens when our first team centre backs are out, I wouldn’t want Koscielney or Mertesacker going anywhere.
Great player!
Can’t really see him play alongside Koscielny though. They’re to similar. Gabriel needs someone like Mertesacker next to him. Someone that can control the defence while he’s bussy going one-on-one with someone, just like Koscielny.
I see very little wrong with his game if anything. He’s the perfect centre back. Reminds me of Sol Campbell with less bulk buy same aggression. I love this guy. Every time he’s played he’s looked solid. Him and Koscielny would cause offences ‘mares. The last ditch tackle yesterday couldn’t have been made by Mertesacker. I’d rotate Gabriel with Mert to rest him occasionally or against faster teams.
Did very well and was very involved in the game….Cant imagine a Theo Walcott highlights package from last night would need a six minute soundtrack.
Gabriel was excellent in this game. He ran a run away attacker down. Challenged every area ball crossed. Throws himself at any shot attempt and one more thing, stepped forward to get that guy offside when caught out of position.
In hindsight having seen Debuchy’s rather impressive cameo at CB last season, maybe Gabriel and Debuchy in the centre would have been the better option.
I love hindsight.
Nice player and nice video but what’s with the music
Just mute the video and enjoy the footage
Chambers was rusty. Gabby played great. Nice to see a different pairing in the center of defense. They did well together against a big team. Hopefully Wenger can give them more playing time. Buying another CD would just be a waste of money.
Really good defender in Gabriel, unfortunately for Chambers he was up against some good attackers and he made a lot of mistakes, fortunately it did not cost us a goal Although Kos and Mert are our best pairing we have, i feel Kos and Gab could become a better pairing, yes both are similar in style, however Center halves develop by playing games together, remember at one point it was Mert and Verm, then due to injury it became Mert and Kos which developed into what it is now. Its obvious Gabriel and more so Chambers need more game time,… Read more »
Hugely encouraged by Gabriel. Looked a defender in the Kos mode, and I liked the way he seemed to take greater responsibility second half and duly pocketed Benteke.
I have read several times now since the start of the season about the increase in quality on the bench, but is that really the case? Last night we had two full backs, two 30 plus holding players, a speeding winger and an attacking MF player. I would suggest that does not give you too many options if you are chasing a result.
Chambers should have gone on loan. Said it yesterday, said it in June, still going to say it today. He’s not going to learn on the bench and he’s fourth choice centre back and third choice right back.
I would actually have sold him in the summer, to be honest. I don’t have a clue why he was bought in the first place, particularly as he cost £19m and we had Jenkinson.
You don’t know why a young defender was bought, and you’d have sold him after one season?
Good man.
I get that Chambers needs to play, but I think we need to keep four CBs at the club. Otherwise, if we had Mertescielny out again, we’d be looking at playing a full back in there and would be one more injury or suspension away from disaster. Tricky one.
A proper defender
Think he’s proven that he deserves more game time.
He’s good in all areas and doesn’t shirk a brush with death.
Careful observers will note that Chambers is extremely slow, too slow to ever be a top defender. Mert is the slowest, sure, but if here weren’t a BFG, he would never have been a pro, even with his good positioning and decent skills. At Chambers’ height, Mert’s cons outweigh his pros. Chambers is neither fast nor huge, and his skills are poor, although in fairness he is indeed young and rusty. Nonetheless, no amount of experience is going to make up for the fact that Chambers is too slowto be a top defender. Yes, Bellerin had some poor games, but… Read more »
