Per Mertesacker says that Wojciech Szczesny’s loan spell could be good for him, and play a part in him returning to the club.
The Polish stopper is a popular figure in the Arsenal dressing room, and the BFG says the team would be happy for him to return after his season in Roma.
“Wojciech wants to compete,” he said. I think he’s a good goalkeeper and he can still develop.
“The team wants him back – that’s good for him. He’s shown great character already in this team and I think he has got a bright future.”
This week it emerged that Roma want to keep him at the end of the loan spell, with Szczesny not ruling out a move.
Speaking last week, he said, “My future will be decided after the European Championship. I love Arsenal, but I’m happy at Roma.
“I know that Roma want me, but I don’t see why Arsenal would not want me also. Garcia believes in me and so too do my teammates and the fans.
“Coming to Rome was the best choice. It’s best being a protagonist for the runners-up in Italy than sitting on the bench in England.
“Even Wenger thought it was the best thing for me.”
I still think Szcz has the potential to be one of the top ten goalkeepers in the world. However, he’s going to be second string behind Cech for at least another three seasons, unless Cech starts to fade. If szcz can deal with that, then I’m all in favour of keeping him. Maybe more loan deals for the next season or two will help.

I prefer him over Ospina as a number 2, learning from Cech.
Though happy for him to do a Jenks and stay on loan for two seasons then come back if he has grown up.

I say we loan him to athletico Madrid! Who knows, he might become a De Gea or Courtois. While we’re on it, let’s give them Sanogo as well. They may awaken the sleeping Aguero in him

Who knows that Cech might do a Seaman or var der Sar and play till 40. Then Szcz might need to play second fiddle for another 6-7 years. As much as I want him to stay with us, really dun think he will be willing to stay without playing..
am a little disappointed in Mert statement. He knows, they know, we all know and Wenger knows that the potentials in Scz will never be realised. See, he has been in arsenal goal before Degea was in atl madrid, b4 cortoise busted into atl madrid, b4 butland and I think him and manual nuer were both fresh then. I love Sczy as an individual. Taking selfies and all that banter. I always took him to be a great one in the making but once i started watching Ospina, i have to say i started enjoying the joy of watching a calm presence than an erratic one. I really wish he would cut out his Alumunia tendencies and be as calm as Cech. That said, i really feel pity for Ospina.
