Poor Mathieu Debuchy, joined Arsenal from Newcastle. Champions League football. Not as many topless men in the stands with their pendulous bosoms out.
Unfortunately it hasn’t worked out, for various reasons, most of which come down to him being really unlucky to have suffered injuries which allowed Hector Bellerin to nail down that first team place.
Now he wants out in order to keep his Euro 2016 hopes alive, and there were strong links with Aston Villa and a hook-up with former Gunner Remi Garde.
Now, according to the Guardian, Sunderland are interested in taking the 30 year old until the end of the season as they look to avoid relegation. They stand a better chance than Villa, who appear utterly doomed at this point, so it remains to be seen if that’s a factor in his decision making.
Perhaps the fact he’s a former Newcastle player might play a part too, although we know that doesn’t always make a difference – witness former Toon keeper Steve Harper, for years the understudy to Irish international Shabriel Given, joining the Mackems last week.
Wherever he ends up, he’d want to get his skates on because the sooner he starts playing, the sooner he can catch the eye of French boss Didier Deschamps.
Which flavour of relegation battle does he fancy the most? Find out in tomorrow’s exciting adventure.

Debuchy is a total dope if he thinks playing for Sunderland will get him a starting place in the French squad. Sagna is playing for City, they’re a team chasing the title, top honours, essentially one of the highest levels you can compete at as a professional player. Playing for Sunderland, under the ‘Walrus’ .. as they desperately try and keep up that sinking ship is non comparable. The only way he could possibly get a starting place over Sagna in the euros, is if he singlehandedly keeps them up; his performances would need to light up the Premier League… Read more »
He wants to be selected first. He is not talking about starting games ahead of Sagna. He did that before playing for Newcastle and Sagna playing for City or Arsenal but his situation is different this time around.
I just hate his attitude, I hate the fact that he is such a push over. Lets not forget, he has been given lots of opportunities to play this season by Arsene Wenger, its not as if Arsene has totally frozen him out the team, and ultimately he’s just had a shocker each and every time he has been given an opportunity. Now I know you can argue that he has had his injuries, and he is a player that needs a run in the team in order to get his confidence back, but ultimately he clearly hasn’t done enough… Read more »
Which would leave us with either Chambers or Flamini as back up right back.
Hmmm.
Chambers would surely get the nod over Flamini having had played it for a spell at SH more recently. I wonder if Wenger had any plans to bring Jenkinson back if Debuchy left, but now with his injury not sure how that would affect things.
Yeah, sorry for Debuchy but unless we’re making a surprise signing I’d have to say no go. You’ve signed on, we’re in a title race. This isn’t the Euros.
We’ve also used Ramsey and Coq in that position before. Although they’re much more important elsewhere.
Debuchy?
More like, Depooski.
You don’t want in on this title train. Then boo to you. Sagna has got you spot all day long anyway.
I never knew that Shay Given’s name is actually Shabriel. I guess you learned something new everyday.
But then I checked Wikipedia. And it’s not Shabriel.
I’m now fallen into the deep abyss of confusion.
I fell for it too.
Villa and Sunderland.
This saga has a whiff of the Bendtner to it.
After his recent comments, sell him at Tesco for all i care.
Surely with Jenkinson out injured he’ll go to West Ham only to be kept on the bench by another young up and coming right back?
as long as Hector’s leg doesn’t fall off the moment Debuchy leaves then frankly this is barely registering on the give-a-fuckometer, given Debuchy’s petulant whining over the last 6 months
good luck with getting your France place back on the strength of being part of a relegated defence. Not.
To be fair to Debuchy, when he first came in he performed well and Sagna was not missed. The unfortunate injury to him has allowed Bellerin to step up and show the rest of Europe, let alone us .that a future world class talent is coming through.
Can’t see Wenger releasing him though without first class cover being available. Chambers and Flamini are not good enough as full backs so unless he plans to use Gabriel there I can’t see him being allowed to leave.
Gabriel played well in quite a few games at RB for Villareal
Meh.
Really sad to see him leave. But on the other hand, im glad because someone who isnt ready to fight for his spot on the team doesnt belong. We’ve had alot of players who just assumed that they should play and you dont want that atmosphere in the squad.
His only chance of playing in the Euros is to go to Citeh and injure Sagna in training!
Cock!
He doesn’t have to compete directly with sagna as the squad will be big enough to have 2 rbs in the roster. I think he would be competing with zouma for a spot at the euros but feel he’s going to lose out because zouma has had more playing time this year and can cover multiple positions, albeit debuchy can cover CB in a cinch. Good luck to Matthieu either way. On a personal human level, you want what’s best for him. We’re lucky his injuries left a void that bellerin has clearly filled beyond matthieus capabilities and has made… Read more »
He knows how to work the knob on the exit door right?
The real danger is that if we let him leave his bad luck with injuries might migrate to our other RB, Bellerin. And we can’t afford that.
I think we have to keep Debuchy and stick pins into him like a voodoo doll until the end of the season. It’s the only way to be sure.
Que Sera Deb*tchy
Debuchy needs to get his head down and work hard in training and show the right attitude. Granted the Euros will probably be his last chance of playing in a major tournament, so even more reason to put the graft in and not whinge like fk…. The frech national team have had enough of them historically. Bellerin will not be able to play week in and week out (the dreaded red zone…!!) with the number of games coming up so Debuchy would have gotten his chance in the FA Cup and less attack minded Prem sides… Looks like he’s shagged… Read more »
The only reason to keep hold of him is for squad depth. He can’t take competition and we don’t need complacency in the team especially when we challenging for the league. I would rather we got rid at the end of the season.
