Arsene Wenger, famously a football manager with a degree in economics, would naturally be upset with football fans throwing money away, but after two coin chucking incidents this weekend, the Arsenal manager has condemned those fans for their behaviour and the media for helping to facilitate it.
West Brom’s Chris Brunt was hit with a fifty-pence piece thrown by his own fans who were unhappy at their loss to Championship side Reading, while after Man City had equalised at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, their players were pelted with coins thrown by Chelsea fans.
Asked about the incidents at his press conference today, Wenger was unequivocal in his condemnation of them, and also suggested that the media’s refusal to highlight issues of abuse in the was a factor too.
“I feel that for years people in the stands feel they can get away with everything,” he said. “The media played a little part in that.
“You are regularly insulted by people in the stands and without people having the feeling they could get punished. It will always go one step further and the incidents, for me, are a disgrace and unacceptable.
“Even if you pay your ticket, you can still respect people. I believe that is just not acceptable.”
Chelsea manager, Guus Hiddink, said, “I condemn it strongly. Those people, they must not come into stadiums.”
Arsenal have been involved in a coin throwing incident in the past when Liverpool’s Jamie Carragher was sent off at Highbury for throwing a coin that had been thrown at him back into the crowd.
Both Wenger and Hiddink are right though, if you can’t express your displeasure in any other way than trying to cause physical harm, football is better off without you.
It’s ok to be upset as a fan, it’s ok to boo and let people(the players, refs etc.) know how you feel, but it crosses every line to throw something on the field at them.
Agreed!!
I wonder, if Trump would agree with this?
He would probably build a large wall, a beautiful wall, to protect the players. And get the fans to pay for it.
Well played sir. If somehow wins our election I think I’m going to have to defect. Otherwise…COYG
Canada will happily welcome all refugees from the US if Trump wins your election. And we won’t mind if you throw money away because our money is worthless.
Don’t look at me, I wont be voting for him.
Trump’s face looks like a 2p coin.
Are you implying that donald trump looks like our queeny?
He only throws money at other candidates when he’s not running himself.
i agree, terrible behaviour an not to be condoned under any circumstances!
but if i were ever to be tempted, ….Mike Dean or Michael Owen would be high on my target list. those two would tempt the patience of a saint!
Remember those cünt spurs cowards throwing coins at Theo as he was being stretchered off.
One to tell the grandkids that
It almost amazes me that it felt like the banana thrown at Bale by one of our lot (who eventually got found out and banned, if I remember right?) caused more media interest than the idea of condemning people and creating a commotion than people who actually intend to cause harm and hurt players.
They don’t just need to leave football they need to leave society, and take a serious look at what their life would be with actual meaning and Steve to be better.
A banana in the eye could hurt mind
What is with that double standard? We gooners can definitely be much more classy than that.
Both are repugnant, one shouldn’t throw things at people period.
If you’re a complete braindead dickhead and you must then yes at the very absolute least avoid hard objects that could fracture skulls, you’ll still never be considered an acceptable human being but you might at least manage to fake it in short spurts.
This is the FA. They don’t feel that being thrown money is the worst thing in the world. They evidently fucking hate bananas.
Wasn’t it Ian Wright who said he wished opponent fans would throw bananas at him because he was hungry when Wenger put him and the others on a diet?
Wouldn’t be surprised if the person throwing 50p at Chris Brunt was Ed Woodward
You only have to read comments on here or other blogs and on other forums to know that there are a lot of very angry and, I would say, maladjusted people out there. I mean the abusive words some so – called Gooners use about our own manager is absolutely dispicable. The natural extension of this is when people take that anger into a stadium all stoked up already and waiting to go so that if one thing goes wrong then they were already at boiling point. I think I love football and Arsenal as much as I should and… Read more »
I might be wrong but I genuinely think that a lot of the uglier comments on the Internet come from that bloody Facebook generation. These kids have grown up online and been exposed to so much unfiltered adult content that they simply weren’t ready for and been warped by it. They’re used to being in arguments online and go looking for them. They’re used to being able to call things “AIDS” or “cancer” or being able to tell someone “kill yourself” because… There are never any repercussions. When they say that shit to eachother it’s probably not even noticed. But… Read more »
It’s why we have a strict comment policy around here.
Arseblog uses abusive words all the time. Calls players, referees and managers cunts etc. No that I care, but it seems a bit hypocritical.
To be fair, there is a difference between abusive words, and abuse. I can’t be arsed to explain, but take a look at the guardian website’s policy.
How surprising that Chelsea fans are again involved in a nauseating incident, what is it about that lot?
Hopefully West Brom will get relegated.
Well West Brom came to Valley Parade and sang songs about our fire, so nothing surprises me with those vermin.
I get people being angry after a shite performance, but throwing things or singing vile chants? They need to get a life. The stuff Sol Campbell had sung at him was awful, much as he’s turned into an arse since retirement
