Chambers enjoys Euro triumph, may leave on loan

Calum Chambers has had a difficult season at Arsenal, but ended it on something of a high as he was part of England U21s Toulon Tournament winning side.

The Arsenal defender started the 2-1 win over France in Avignon yesterday, but overall he has found life tough going. After an impressive start to his Arsenal career, his confidence took a knock and last season started just twice in the Premier League – although when he did play he acquitted himself well.

This morning there are reports that Arsene Wenger is willing to let the 21 year old go out on loan next season to help him develop as a player.

With rumours of interest in Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly to add depth at centre-half, as well as Bolton’s Rob Holding, Chambers may find his chances of first team football even more restricted.

Much will depend on how the Arsenal manager views his position in the side. With Mathieu Debuchy set to depart this summer and Carl Jenkinson still sidelined with a serious knee injury, Chambers provides cover at right back too.

However, Wenger may have to find a different solution there if he wants the former Southampton man to play regular football next season.

That would simply be fantastic…He is going to become a top player…I guarantee it.

Yuck Fu

Well I personally like him, he’s an underrated prospect. Played excellently when given a chance this season (aside from Sheffield Wednesday) – he is only 21 and will only get better… Glad to see him win something, will do his confidence no harm! Plus i like the thought of him and Holding being an ‘old fashioned’ English CB pairing.

Arseblood

More Wenger mis-management.
We have a great young player on our hands here….yet Wenger would rather play a muppet like Gabriel at CB!
No one can tell me Gabriel is better than Chambers!

Richie Growling

Gabriel is better than Chambers.

Luis Boa Muerte

Gabriel is useless

Jimbo1

Not useless, just can’t understand his teammates.

Mega

How did you do that? I thought Arseblood was very clear.

That’s impossible!

IceCoolMilkyT

No he isn’t. Gabriel is too weak, gets pushed off the ball too easily and was directly responsible for 5 or 6 key goals against us this season. That’s ignoring how Costa made a fool of him. If he starts regularly next season, teams will target him as a weak point, Wenger will do his stubborn thing, and we’ll be in trouble again.

Revamp

On loan to EPL club will help him alot, will be good for us nd him…

Mega

What’s an Alot?

I’m sure it will help him, though. Staying and playing with Arsenal bound to help more mind you.

Why not

Fail.

ArthriticKnee

I would keep him and give him a chance. Gabriel hasn’t been really convincing, while Mertesacker is slowly moving out of starting eleven.

I really don’t see the point in bringing in another CD unless it’s a genuine upgrade on our current options.

ArthriticKnee

But young prospects are always welcome of course.

Stewart Robson's therapist

This may not be a popular opinion, but for Chambers to still be behind Gabriel in the centre-back pecking order by the end of the season was a travesty.

Mark

Unfortunately he’s another expensive mistake in trying to build a British core. Southampton are laughing all the way to the bank on the lemons they’ve sold for big money over the last few years. I know we need to keep a few around to meet the home grown quota, provide funny banter and organize team outings down the pub, but maybe we could just focus on the player instead of the passport from now on…

Stewart Robson's therapist

We’ll have to agree to disagree on this. Sorry.

goonero

Have you actually watched Chambers play? It sounds like you’re just dragging out clichés to fit your narrative. Chambers has great technique, his quick feet and quick thinking helped him as a right back when his pace failed him. He has tackles well and is particularly brave here (although he does have to work on getting fewer yellows…equal parts his combative nature, inexperience and occasional poor positioning). He is excellent in the air and he is cool and calm on the ball. If Chambers doesn’t make the grade at Arsenal it won’t be because he wasn’t good enough and it… Read more »

Mark

Look, I really hope that Chambers makes it and that he turns out to be our future at CB. But unfortunately the player that we’ve had at Arsenal bears no resemblance whatsoever to your description. He’s not only painfully slow but technically below average and has looked completely out of his depth in anything more than a 5 min runout. He’s picked up yellow cards because he’s completely off the pace of the game, not because he’s particularly combative or aggressive. You’re right that we shouldn’t judge based on cliches, but there’s no way that Chambers would be getting such… Read more »

AKB(Not the one your thinking of)

Chambers wasn’t given a chance to stake his credentials post first half of last season. So how do you expect him to take the position

New Day Rocks

Chambers deserved a run at the end of the season, certainly. Not sure if it would have worked out any better, but using Gabriel was not working.

Bosscielny

He needs to play regular football. He should go on loan preferably to a championship side where he would have more chances to play and will toughen him up.

Heiawn

Hopefully this is the catalyst needed to really kick start his Arsenal career. He has lots of potential and youth on his side.

SoqedHozi

Flamini to stay and play at rb

Mesut Aussie

Wouldn’t be surprised… All quiet on the flam front.

dogbreath

yeah. good shout!

Lula da GIlberto

His development needs to kick on. Still think he’s a real talent though. Hopefully more games will iron out the mistakes.

Bob Davis

Chambers needs to go out on loan to develop his game. His old club Southampton would be a good choice. I still think he has a lot of potential. I look forward to seeing how he gets on.

Stewart Robson's therapist

Whisper it…but getting to know Ronald Koeman might just be helpful for his future Arsenal prospects too…

Georgy Charles

If he gets to know Ronald Norman and he plays well…

Georgy Charles

Koeman even

LittleMozart

Ronald Norman sounds like a true scholar of the game

goonero

Congrats to the young lions! It bodes well for the future of English footballers! He didn’t really have a bad season, he’s just another who the manager didn’t give a fair chance to play. He is already a much better player than Gabriel so I think it was wrong not to play him then and it would be wrong to loan him out and keep Gabriel in the squad. Then if we sign another cb it will put him even further out of the picture than he is. I guess selfishly I want him to stay but if Arsene won’t… Read more »

Neils.Scruggs

I don’t understand comments like “he’s just another the manager didn’t give a fair chance to play” Please name one player in Wenger’s 20 years at Arsenal that left because of lack playing time and later developed into a players good enough to start at Arsenal. He’s gotten luck a couple of times when players on the way out only got chance because of injury, but he has stellar history of correctly identifying the potential in his own squad. I like Joel Campbell and was surprised he didn’t play more at the end of the year, but no matter where… Read more »

George has Wood.

Mertesacker moving slowly out of the first eleven?

Mertesacker moves slowly in the first eleven!

NewSeason

He’s a really handsome young man isn’t he?
Maybe when Per hangs up his boots, Chambers may become first choice.

Anders

I think Chambers needs regular playing time to make the next level. He needs to toughen up and take responsibility of he’s to make it as an CB. A year in the Championship or at a struggling PL team would make a world of good to him. I also hold Isak Hayden very high and do think he has what it takes to make it at CB. If Isak deputize next season while Chambers goes out on loan they are ready to form a fruitful partnership from then on?

santori

I don’t think he should go on loan. I think he needs to play his natural position at Rback as cover for Bellerin. He is more technical than Jenkinson and will give us better cover with his experience playing in the middle. Meanwhile, he can continue also to understudy at cback from there. Should he be sent on loan, we may be dependent on the more limited Jenkinson. Or we will have to buy yet another player to cover which is unlikely to happen (It may mean we will be distracted from adding one of two critical other positions in… Read more »

Chambers was given a lot of opportunities and he did not justify the money that was spent for him. A true top class player does not need so many opportunities to prove his talent and establish himself. And do not forget that he plays for Arsenal, not for a village club which has the luxury to experiment with players.

Bellerin-a

Are you mental? He wasn’t given “a lot” of opportunities at all. He played games, but barely started and barely had a long run in the side at all. He’s been played in 3 different positions, he doesn’t know his best position, who expects to sign a 19 year old and immediately get a “true top class player”? Madness. He’s got a lot of ability and potential, let’s not judge him because he’s not displaced one of the best PL defenders in Kos and a World Cup winning German who has a huge total of caps in Merts shall we?

Brandon

At his age, a loan move will probably spell the end of his Arsenal career. I love how that whole ‘British core’ bit lasted only about 2 seasons. Now Walcott, Chamberlain, Gibbs, and now Chambers are all reported near the exit.
