Calum Chambers may not be going to the European Championships this summer, but the defender will still represent England in France this summer after being named in Gareth Southgate’s under-21 squad for the Toulon Tournament.
The centre-back is Arsenal’s sole representative in a 20-man squad that features a whole host of players Arseblog News has never heard of. Excuse our ignorance.
According to The FA, the squad will meet at St. George’s Park before taking on Portugal on Thursday. The young Lions will then take on Guinea (23 May), Paraguay (25 May) and Japan (27 May) in their group games before a potential fifth game on Sunday 29 May should Southgate’s team finish top or second in the group.
We guess this represents good news for Calum, although we’re pretty certain he’d have preferred a couple of weeks in Vegas with the Ox and Gibbs.
Southgate’s England squad
Goalkeepers: Angus Gunn (Manchester City), Jordan Pickford (Sunderland)
Defenders: Calum Chambers (Arsenal), Ben Chilwell (Leicester City), Brendan Galloway (Everton), Kortney Hause (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Dominic Iorfa (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Jack Stephens (Southampton), Matt Targett (Southampton)
Midfielders: Lewis Baker (Vitesse Arnhem, loan from Chelsea), Matt Grimes (Swansea City), Nathaniel Chalobah (Napoli, loan from Chelsea), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Chelsea), John Swift (Chelsea), James Ward-Prowse (Southampton)
Forwards: Jack Grealish (Aston Villa), Kasey Palmer (Chelsea) Nathan Redmond (Norwich City), Duncan Watmore (Sunderland), Cauley Woodrow (Fulham)
Good luck to him. He’l benefit from some much needed game time, and we’ll benefit from that next season. I suspect we’ll see a lot more of him next year in a number of positions.
Really hope so, it’s clear to see that there’s a massive amount of potential in Calum, I’d even stick my neck out and say he’s more reliable and more calm than Gabriel, therefore a better fit with Kos.
was genuinely excited about something arsenal for the first time in weeks because I thought Calum snuck into the euro team. damn you blogs, damn you!
The most loathsome journo in football Neil Ashton used Chambers as a stick to beat Arsene with in The Sun the other day. Apparently Chambers is proof that Wenger’s eye for young talent has never existed because he hasn’t become a first-team regular yet.
(No mention of our 21-year old right-back from the academy who’s just made the PFA Team of the Year. Nor the 19-year old Nigerian international who’s just emerged. Those are insignificant, obviously.)
Pretty uninspiring up front. Would’ve thought Akpom might have made it. I remember him and Isaac Hayden played in it last year. Unfortunately for Hayden he was underused and played at RB.
Is that you, Jeorge?
None of those forwards appear to be strikers, or is it me?
No, I’ve had that before, I should probably change it to prevent confusion on here. I have an ironic nickname in ‘the J Bird’ because my name starts with a J. In answer to your question though, Cauley Woodrow is the only recognised CF of that lot.
Is Matt Grimes related to Frank Grimes?
You mean Grimey? How’s he doing?
Has been a brilliant bass player for 5SOS during his absence from the Arsenal squad. Well done Calum.
Perhaps he can use this time to sweet talk Ben Chilwell into joining us.
Apparently a few other top Prem teams are keen so he should be worth a punt at a few million.
Calum, your mission if you choose to accept it…
Akpom, Iwobi, Hayden all ignored.
Iwobi chose to play for Nigeria
Matt Targett has no right being a defender with that name.
Assuming he’s tall, convert him into an old fashioned towering centre forward at once.
Click bait headline from hound.
And you still clicked the bait. Like a carp with a.. mouse…yeah no never mind.
Still young and plenty of learning curve to negotiate.
The big fear is Wenger is again going to entrust Chamber to Cback.
Frankly, I prefer him at Rback berth and for us to bring in a more ready made player at Cback to eventually pair with Gabriel or Chambers. This is a position where experience (particularly mental experience) counts.
Good to see Jack Grealish is living his dream in France this summer, hope he stays off the laughing gas
