The FA have confirmed that Jack Wilshere will be on the England plane to EURO 2016.
The Arsenal midfielder, who played only 141 minutes of first team football last season, was selected in the provisional squad by Roy Hodgson and has secured his place after proving his fitness in starts against Turkey and Australia in the last week.
18-year-old Marcus Rashford also travels, but Danny Drinkwater, Andros Townsend and Fabian Delph all miss out.
Nine of Arsenal’s first team squad look set to feature in France (10 if you count the departing Tomas Rosicky).
Petr Cech – Czech Republic
Wojciech Szczesny – Poland
Laurent Koscielny – France
Olivier Giroud – France
Mesut Ozil – Germany
Aaron Ramsey – Wales
Granit Xhaka – Switzerland
Jack Wilshere – England
Hector Bellerin – Spain
Yay!
Anyone and everyone who isn’t an Arsenal are literally losing their minds that Wilshere has gone and Drinkwater hasn’t.
Roy’s selection has caused the internet to be right on the brink, like that bit in Ghostbuster’s when they’re about to cross the streams and
Spengler says: Don’t cross the streams. Then Venkman goes: Why?
Spengler: It would be bad.
Good for Jack. Hope he gets some action and he’s been MOTM too often not to.
Good luck putting up with the Sp*rs players in the squad.
Kane can keep his mouth shut… Oh wait.
Nicely done
How on earth was Drinkwater left out of this squad and Henderson and Rashford included?
Gutted for Drinkwater, he was excellent this season and very decent in friendlies.
I think Roy was either going to take Henderson, Drinkwater or Milner as they are all similar types of players, he was never going to take all 3. Wilshere is unique to the England set up with his creative prowess, he can do that higher up the pitch, or he can be sat deeper next to a holding CM or CDM further back. Non of the other midfield options in the England squad can offer that diversity, especially a player as limited in ability as Drinkwater. Obviously a bit gutted for him, as he probably deserved to go on merit,… Read more »
Oh, the non-Arsenal England fans will be crying with rage on Twitter…already laughing at the thought of it. Especially since us Gooners all know they’ll be licking his arse by the end of the tournament.
By end of the tournament do you mean the stage at which we get knocked out, or the actual end of the tournament with the trophy and medals and stuff?
I do feel sorry for Drinkwater, just had the season of his life, played great in the games he has played but yet the likes of Henderson chosen before him, what does Henderson offer on the pitch apart from the ball to the opposition?!
People will say Jack don’t deserve to be there but seeing as he is the only creative midfielder England have, not to mention the boy is class when he’s not injured, he simply has to go. Hopefully has a great tournament, doesn’t get injured and comes back hungry and fit for the start of our season
I couldn’t agree more about drinkwater not being picked, one of the players of the season.Glad jack is picked because he could use a few games under his belt before the start of the season.
Good for jackieboy, but blogs, please confirm that we have signed a #worldclasstriker soon, i dont care if its a lie, i need it. Withdrawals are killing me
In a move that has taken the premier league by surprise, Arsenal have signed Robert Lewandowski for an initial fee of £60m rising to £80m with addons. Details shortly.
Aubamayang international coach said he was in the middle of changing club. Who knows? But more chance he goes to City or United.
Wouldn’t it just be peak Arsenal if England draw the Swiss in the later rounds (yeah lol at England getting through the groups) and Jack and Granit go for a 50-50 and the resulting calamitous crunch leaves them both out for the season ahead?
Cannot believe Henderson made it. well actually someone needs to fulfill the nivea post shave balm selling quota
Well done to Jack – it’s so bloody frustrating seeing the dullards on Facebook/Twitter who think he’s shit.
Can’t wait for Rashford to do fuck all, Alli to punch someone and get sent off, and for Kane to asphyxiate after having his stupid mouth sewn shut. Who’ll be their new golden boy, then?
I’m glad he got called being an Arsenal player and all. But to be honest he’s the least surprising pick. All he to do was run on a pitch and kick a ball and his position was guaranteed. Arsènes commentary about him have always had to with getting him ready for the Euros.
I hope he’s able to repay the faith they’ve put in him and doesn’t lose his head.
Come back safe…
France, Germany, Spain & England…An Arsenal player is definitely lifting the Euros…again.
Nah, Ireland’s a cert.
Let’s sign Shane Long before it’s too late.
#worldclasstriker ?
Wish him a super outing at the Euros.
I hope he does really well. In competitive matches for England, he’s been MOTM in something like 5 of the last 6. This tournament may be just what he needs to start next season in peak fitness, after being sidelined for so long. Come back in one piece, Jack!
The neutrals can now support Switzerland since Xhaka is playing for them … will be interesting to see him in action. Jack fully deserved but leaving out Drinkwater is appalling. Maybe he’ll get a call-up when one of the others (not Jack) gets a knock that takes him out for a month. Good luck to all the Arsenal boys.
* a year
He hasn’t played a full 90 minutes for Arsenal since 2014. And yet, here he in the England squad for the summer increasing the odds they will return him a crock and losing valuable pre-season preparation.
