ESPN Brazil says Arsenal after Gabigol

ESPN Brazil have linked Arsenal with Santos forward, Gabriel Barbosa, known as Gabigol.

They say that a club official has spoken to the player and his representatives, and received a favourable response to a possible move to England this summer. He’ll be playing at the Rio Olympics in August, and said that he does have options for a move.

“Yes, I have proposals that please me from big European clubs, but that’s with my parents and my agents,” he said.

“But I’m happy at Santos. This will be resolved soon. Santos is my home, my place, but let’s take it easy and then decide.”

We asked our resident Brazilian football expert, Tim Stillman, what he made of it.

“I read the report and I don’t see a lot of foundation to it, it’s all very vague,” he said.

“He wants to go to Europe after the Olympics for definite. He wants a big European club and there’s interest, but the only club with money down at the moment are a Chinese club and Fiorentina.

“He wants a bigger European club, so I reckon it’s probably his agent using us to create interest. The Brexit stuff is tenuous, that won’t take effect for ages and if anything, will make it even easier for Brazilians to come here.

“The piece on ESPN contains an interview with him given yesterday too, which further leads me to believe they’ve been fed the line by his reps.”

If he’s ambitious, he’s not going to go to China, and perhaps Arsenal interest is designed to stir up movement from other clubs, so we’ll have to wait and see.

We like the name Gabigol though. It’s like his name with GOAL at the end of it. And he’s a striker!

8 poos though, for now.

Good sold poo meter

GoonerAlex

If we met the release clause and the poo wants to come out then it will be sold

Third Plebeian

Yes, but there are always three parties involved. First of all, do you want to poo? Then, does the toilet want your poo? And also, we need the poo to come out. So it’s not that simple.

JArghS

And we only want poos of top, top quality

Gooneron

LANP
Like A New Poo

Ramsey's spirit

Given we would like a fast poo, does anybody have a financial laxative for dick law?

Anonymarse

How about a laxatette?

Fletcher

solid.

Pooner

Tony Soprano will be delighted.

Richie

He’s pretty good on football manager after a few years! Makes him a must surely? 😉

AGunner

Billed as the next Neymar by Santos. Would be interesting if he came.

Wenger often complains how difficult it is to get non-European player’s work permits, as was the case with Di Maria in his early days, so would be surprised if this comes through!

Fabulous

What with the brexit debacle to boot. No more spending “x amount of years at Sociedad” to aid in getting your work permit.

The yellow from the egg

If the transfer fee is over 10 million pounds he automatically gets a work permit.

assistantref

They changed the rules last year, apparently now if you pay over 10 million pounds (10% less than it was just a week ago!) the player automatically qualifies. Which is pretty funny, when you think about it.

Gooneron

Don’t we have Sanagoal already

Tom Gun

A friend told me over the weekend Sanogoal has been given the no. 9 for the upcoming season. I have been having nightmares about this and Wenger (who I love and still very much want to be manager before you start!) claiming he is a LANS and will be the striker we’ve been looking for – aaaarrrgghh!! Please can someone tell me this is definitely a load of bs – put me out of my misery!

Anonymarse

Ah but what nobody spotted is that he has ‘no goal’ in his name. Subtle difference but nonetheless important …

William Striker

A bid over 10m pounds automatically gets him a Work Permit under the new rules Greg Dykes pushed through, doesn’t it?

MTZ

A 19-year old with lots of potential? I like it. We need to take chances like this to develop truly fantastic strikers. However, he’s far from ready to shoot us to the title, so that still means we need a stop gap solution of some kind. We can’t go into the new season with only one experienced striker in the squad (considering Welbeck is out next season).

Jeremy O Dwyer

He’s great in the latest pes game too. Scores tonnes of goals.
Maybe Arsene got the idea after a late might master league session

piter

I bought him on Football manager, he’s great

Al Gilmore

Best name since Carlos Kickaball.

what do you mean that wasn’t a real name?

gee

Kaka the best for me. imagine if he ever linked with us the poo rating be off the page

Arsepedant

Yeh, him and Dudu. And Dunga to replace Wenger as manager.

JakeyBoy

This would be excellent. I can forgive Arsene not signing a top striker for years, what I can’t understand is that we haven’t signed a young up and comer, there’s no excuse for that really.

Crash Fistfight

Just to reassure everyone, he looks really good on Youtube.

Frank the Gooner

How reputable is ESPN? I don’t trust American news outlets… if they are one of course.

Doug

Well it’s the Brazilian branch of an American sports news site known for being rubbish at football news. So make of it what you will

Snake in the grARSE

He’s ripped. He’s South American. Just buy him.

Oppitz

Well, I’m a brazilian and there is at least a couple of better options then him.

Plus, although he has “goal” on his nickname, he’s not a striker, he plays more as a winger with Ricardo Oliveira as the striker. And he’s definitely not the next Neymar.

Crash Fistfight

Don’t tell us, tell Arsene!

Who are these other players you speak of?…

Oppitz

I would rather have Gabriel Jesus (Palmeiras) or Luan (Grêmio). I believe Jesus is going to be the next great brazilian player after Neymar. He has the technical ability and the speed to play in the flanks but he has been scoring a lot of goals as a striker. So his ceiling is really high, he can trully became a complete striker for us. Luan probably doesn’t have the same ceiling as Gabriel Jesus or even Gabigol, but he’s more ready, he’s a refined player with great technique who knows how to set up plays and has good passing and… Read more »

Stillberto

Totally agreed on Gabriel Jesus, really started developing into a number 9 this year. Alas, I think Barca will snap him up.

Arsetronomy

Jesus is probably really good at everything.

Faxe

We already have the Welsh Jesus.

Wellington

I’m also Brazilian and think Gabigol is the best bet for a European club currently in Brazilian football. Gabriel Jesus (Palmeiras) is playing on a team that was 2 years ago in the Brazilian second division and that was saved by Santos not to fall for the third time, it is a matter of time to not be fighting not to be relegated again.

Stillmatic

With a name like Wellington, who are we to deny your Brazilian heritage?

Pires Charming

So what’s his rating in Football Manager or Fifa 16?

Overmars

Other sources say that ESPN Brasil report that we have made an offer. I hope that is true.

Hahahahaha @ the poo the lady!

Goonsquad

Mrs Flappyhandski?

richard of York

The poo meter is all sold out for this one. Let the parent’s handle it.

Soler

Holy shit! It’d be great to save time on Football Manager. He’s a total wonderkid!!!

DontForget

Anyone remember the episode of The Office (American) where Michael Scott is meeting with the “mobster” at the Italian restaurant and repeatedly tries to order “Gabigol” lol. That’s all I can think of when I see this guy’s name.

Jamie Vardinho

Loool and Andy as the car mechanic hahahaha

Highland Gooner

My close season fantasy wishlist was for Xhaka, Isco and Gabigol (though I’ve since heard that Isco is a bit of an asshole in training… so maybe drop him) because, while I’d really prefer an established, top class cf, I’ve long held the view that that player isn’t out there. Barbosa is on the slight side, but he’s a quality finisher and if there’s a young striker I’d want to punt on it’s him. I’d heard that Barca had first dibs, but if he’s agitating for a move now, might have a shot after all =]

TL:DR yes please

The Pool Guy

Is there an app that churns out these crazy good one word footballer names? You know, I answer a couple personal questions and the app spits something out just me. I feel like I need this.

Arsetronomy

Arsenaldo.

The Pool Guy

Poolmanio

A xerioz gunner

Arsedildo??
I’ll get my coat

Crew

Don’t forget the dildo.

Merlin's Panini

My favourite more recent Brazil player names are Bernard, Alan and Fred.
I’m looking forward to see hot prospects Alfred, Graham, Ted, Clive and Norman

assistantref

Looks kinda roid ragey in that picture, I gotta say….

Jamie Vardinho

Just read fockin Crystal Palace have had a bid of €38mil for Batshuayi accepted.

Money doesnt always equal talent but man we need to get a guy of the above potential quick

Jamie Vardinho

Good to see the Football Manager boys on here.

High potential South American footballers based in South America I know are Barbosa and Luan

The Night Elf

Q: So if we sign him … and he goes on to become our captain … what would we call him?

A: Captain Barbosa … arrrr!!

He's got no hair but we don't care...

Just what we need, a mature proven prolific striker used to banging them in all over Europe. Hold on….

The lawyer

Best young striker on Football Manager. Just the kind of gamble we need to make given the current paucity of “world class” strikers around.

Kosozil

He has always been a ‘Wonderkid’ you in FM.
If he really does lives up to to his potential, then he will really be a hell of a signing

Mark

Good one for the future, but need someone that can step in this year and take over the role.

Call me baby

I had him on fm2015 and he had golden boot

Dan Hunter

Stop fuckin about Arsene and go and get Higuain and win the title next year

Sid

We had one of those.
Sanogo(al).
It might be a bad omen!
