Alex Iwobi says he should have scored the goal that would have given the Gunners an unlikely three points against PSG last night.
After his shot was saved and rebounded for Alexis Sanchez to sweep home the equaliser, the 20 year old had a glorious opportunity to put Arsenal ahead a few minutes later. Set up by the Chilean, Iwobi’s shot lacked the power to beat Bob Nipples in the PSG goal, and the youngster chided himself afterwards for not finishing the job.
“I had the chance to score, but my main focus was to get it on target and also beat the goalkeeper, but it was a good save and I was unfortunate not to get the goal,” he said.
“The first chance I had I thought I was going to score [too], but I was just lucky Alexis put it away and I was just happy we were able to get a goal and come back into the game.”
He was more harsh on himself on his Snapchat account, posting the following just after the final whistle:
He did have a positive impact in the second half in particular though, so he ought not to dwell on it too much.
Speaking about the result in general, he continued, “I think we performed very well and we got a good point. We fought back and we were able to get a point, we weren’t able to get the second goal which we should have got.
“I should have got it to be fair, but we were a little bit unlucky.”
At least he wasn’t doing an Ox afterwards, he kept his head up and kept going.
Do you think Chech would make those brilliant saves had he played last night?
Up thumb for yes, down thumb for no.
Don’t really rate Cech, anything long range seems to find back of the net. I think Ospina is better and should be given a chance to prove he’s number 1. Especially after last night.
Absolutely sums up the fickleness of fans better than I ever could.
Bandwagon Cech about to leave the station. All aboard!
What’s so fickle about him having an opinion? Besides, Ospina played well AND benched szcezny in his first season…then as soon as Cech came into the club, Ospina was suddenly branded incompetent. If anybody is fickle, it’s you.
‘Paw patrol’ is quite right about Cech’s weakness at long distance pilers. But his commanding of the box at corners and in general defensive play gives him the nod.
I don’t know. Because he didn’t play. So it is irrelevant. I do know he saved us a point against Liverpool for some amazing saves last season. So he definitely has it in him.
Cech has a pretty impressive champions league clean sheet record. Seen as how some people have short memories. After the first two champs league games last year we were hanging on by a thread. Cech didn’t not play in them games.
Ospina was outstanding last night. Hats off to him but Cech is our number 1 and an outstanding one at that.
No worries. You will be a great player.
”I wanted to score but unfortunately, I was concentrating too hard on trying to score. So I didn’t score”
There might be some logic to it. Maybe if he hadn’t thought about it and just smashed it, it might’ve gone in.
I would have just smashed it, but then that’s the reason I am in a dead end job with no life.

You know it.
But Black Dynamite, I SELL DRUGS TO THE COMMUNITY.
I said SHIYUUUTT!!
the best players are often their own harshest critics so that bodes well. like the look of AI, he’s got bits of Brady and bits of Viera and is starting to look as if we might be talking about still not finding “the new Iwobi” in 20 years time…
I love his mentality. He’ll be a better player than his natural talent would suggest.
Am I the only one who thought Iwobi had a stellar game for us yesterday?
OK he missed some decent chances but his link-up play in the final 3rd was excellent as always, and he supported Sanchez far better than anyone else, making darting runs behind the back 4. His stamina is fantastic as well.
Stupid BT sports presenters kept banging on about … ‘When is Wenger going to haul him off’ … SHUT IT MICHAEL
He does really well going forward, I agree. Unfortunately he didn’t support his left back nearly as well, which is something you can’t get away with at this level, especially when the other team is clearly targeting that side. In the first half Monreal had no help from him and had to deal with Aurier AND Di Maria or Verratti several times. Alexis does that a lot better when he is on the left wing (which is another reason for not playing him down the middle). I’m confident that he will sort that part of his game out though, otherwise… Read more »
i think amoung the attackers iwobi sancehz and maybe cazorla were the only ones who were trying to do anything out there. ox , ozil didint even put up a fight.
it says a lot about him and his mentality to post something like this . if our more players were like this we would’ve a good team
“Well were a bit unlucky.” Haha Iwobi sure is a child of Wenger! We were luckier than a leprechaun holding the pot of gold in a field of 4-leafed clovers and he comes out with “WE were a bit unlucky.” Haha love this guy! Forget about Adams, Henry or Vieira being the natural successor to Wenger – Iwobi is nailed on for the role!! ?
After a bad start Iwobi grew into the game and was crucial in gaining the point. He could be regular for this club for ten years if he carries on like this.
talk,talk and talk
Rate him. Starts on the right hand side at the minute for me. Boy is strong, can keep it in tight areas and bags of energy.
I’ll let Arsene off for last night’s team, perhaps there was some tactical reasoning behind it, but if we don’t see Xhaka and Alexis starts up front on Saturday I’ll genuinely be worried.
This boy is developing very nicely and i think he is going to end up a being a very special player for arsenal, if he continues with the same work ethics and humbleness. Ever since he broke into the first team, i have always been impressed not only by his technical ability, but also by his footballing intelligence at such a young age,…. the ability to spot and make key defense splitting passes, and that ‘knack’, (that all top attacking players seem to have), of simply ending up where they can take a prime shot at goal. sometimes it goes… Read more »
I said it to non supporting friends last night that Iwobi was a real talent. They just shrugged and said “I’ve said that before”. Kind of depressing that I agreed. Break the trend Alex please!
weobi’s performance last night was great. It baffles me why Wenger continues to give opportunities to Ox and Wallcot despite their poor performances. Honestly, Wallcot seemed to be improving but not Ox. He should have been the one that went on loan instead of Campbell. We were absolutely lucky yesterday. The overall performance was poor apart from Ospina’s
Well obviously Wenger is hoping that Ox is able to play to his potential, because he’s clearly talented but it just seems the pressure gets to him and hes not able to perform.
Walcott has been good this season, no need to draw him into this. Ox has been horrible. Everyone can see the talent in there but he seems to lack the work rate and attitude to succeed, you can’t jog/walk back after the team has lost the ball and it seems that he is only concentrated on his own performances, instead of fighting for the team.
I read from most that Walcott has been good this season, based on what really? Is it due to the fact he figure he suppose to track back and does it 3 times in a game with some bite? otherwise his attacking intent is all but non-existent. Walcott receives ball on the wing, stops it, then passes it to Bellerin on the wing or to the middle. Then goes on the defenders shoulder. Not bad but when you are playing on the wing you should at least be able to take on a player, especially when it is a one… Read more »
At least he put the shot on the goal vs other players (i.e. Walcott/Chamberlin/Giroud) that shank many of their big chances. It was a great save by the keeper. What I like is the fact he got himself into those positions to take big shots like those two he did.
At least it’s not: “we need to learn from our mistakes”.
I don’t get all this criticism of the Ox.
Granted he isn’t finding the final product but he’s full of endeavor and he is genuinely trying.
Prefer to see the Ox dissapointed with himself and trying than someone content with his contribution.
Whether Wenger should have started Alexis up top instead of GIroud of course is another thing Or whether he should have started Xhaka.
He has been bad, that’s why the criticism. Doesn’t track back and offers zero help for the fullback.
Bob Nipples!!! The return leg seems more interesting already :p
they had Nipples in goal, a tit in midfield (Veratti) and an arse up front ( cavani).
I like Iwobi I feel like he is a real talent it also doesn’t seem as if he’s injury prone which is good for the team.
What worries me is his assertion that we did very well.
We were dogshite.
If the players think that is a good performance what will it take to wake them up..?
I don’t think the players think it was a good performance.
I think they know it was a poor performance but we got a good result.
Love Iwobi and his hunger. Walcott & Oxlade-Chamberlain take note.
The goal arsenal fc conceeded to psg was bad judgement mainly when psg moved forward to area but you see how how the psg goal scorer was professional moving in certain areas good attacking from arsenal it was nice to see a shot smash through the defensive psg iwobi and alexis. Ospina m.o.t.m and it was different to see coquelin amongst the attack.
