It’s well known that before Mesut Ozil moved to Real Madrid, Arsene Wenger tried to bring him to North London.
The playmaker moved from Werder Bremen to the Spanish giants in 2010, but was made available in 2013 as they sought to bring in Gareth Bale from Sp*rs.
Having already had a conversation with the Arsenal manager to say Arsenal woud be top of his list, Ozil was true to his word, joining on deadline day for a club record fee of £42.5m.
“I spoke with Wenger and he wanted me at Arsenal,” he said in a video called Arsenal Albums for the club’s YouTube channel.
“I said ‘if I get the opportunity to change clubs, you’ll be the first address for me. So we spoke and I decided to come.
“I remember Henry, Dennis Bergkamp, Robert Pires – such great people and footballers – and I wanted to be a part of them.
“To come here to be successful with this team. And it’s good! My first and second year we won the FA Cup. I really enjoy playing for such a big club like Arsenal.”
Excellent choice, Mesut.

He was an excellent panic buy at 42.3m As y do not understand the way the market works. We have a finite budget. Wenger knew Ozil was a possibility but he could not be moved until the selling club had concluded their own deal with Bale who dragged his feet to end of window. Meanwhile some substantial ground work had already been put in place (courtesy of Per) to convince Ozil to come to us. I remember wondering what was out there that we could get that would make a dent and I continued to come up with nothing. As I was losing faith the name Özil started popping up and I thought “yes, oh yes, OH YESSSSS” ala Austin Powers but still think he’ll never sign for us. Then he did!!! OH YESSSSSS!!!
