Karanka praise for developing Chambers, Wenger happy

Aitor Karanka says he spoke with Arsene Wenger about Calum Chambers when Arsenal met Boro back in October, and revealed the Arsenal boss is pleased with how the 21 year old is doing at his loan club.

He’s playing more regularly and the Spaniard, a centre-half himself during his playing days with Athletic Bilbao and Real Madrid, likes what he sees.

“Arsene told me he’s really pleased as Calum had started to play,” he said.

He has a lot of good things. He is good with the ball, he’s strong in the air, sometimes he may look as if he’s not aggressive or strong, but he is really strong and he’s using that experience to play.”

As for his future with the Gunners, Karanka seemed positive.

“I’ve no doubt that he can play at Arsenal,” he said. “For me, he’s a really good central defender.

“He can play as a right-back as when you’re a good player you can play in different positions, but for me now he’s better as a central defender and he can improve in that position.”

So, sounds like it’s going well for him, and hopefully he can perform well against his former club Southampton today.

I have been watching Boro games when possible because of Chambers and he looks great and has real leadership abilities. Confidence is a very important commodity and I know that Arsenal supporters have extremely high standards and expectations but there are times in which I think we put way too much pressure on our young players and our impatience can undermine their development. It was a great move to bed Chambers with a defensively minded manager and a gritty side that works hard throughout the game. His partnership with Ben Gibson is an exciting one for England as they continue… Read more »

Watched him play a few times this season. Seems to be doing well, but still a long way off pushing our first 4 center halves.

Seems to spend alot of time fixing his hair too.

I’m so happy he’s settled in and found a place. I really want this one to make it at Arsenal. Ever since that game against Swansea as a RB I felt he was unfairly turned on by many who claimed he was suddenly dog turd. He had bad game. Fortunately he’s found his place in the middle(sboro, heh) and is doing it consistently. Very excited to see the return of the Chambers-Holding partnership from their England U21s spell. Looks to be a bright future indeed with Mustafi and Gab in front of them for whenever the day cones that Kos… Read more »

Personally I would have rather we just reverted him to his natural position at Rback instead of developing him into a Cback for this season with jenkinson being so limited. However Gabriel has stepped up for co0ver in absence of the unlucky Debuchy and I suppose looking long term, Koscielny isn’t that young. Per (Who has been excellent for us) will likely step down and maybe Koscielny following in another season or two. We will have both HOlding and Chambers incubating to take over plus there will be Mustafi and Gabriel. Our search may have to start for fullbacks in… Read more »

“Per (Who has been excellent for us) will likely step down”

He indeed has been excellent for us and I hope fans remember this should he get a chance again this season.

I’ve read he’s in his last year for us at Arsenal. Anyone know if that’s true or not? I think if it is it’ll be unlikely we’ll see him stay on, purely because he’s no longer first choice, he’s not on the incline, and we have a strong enough younger level of depth.
