Welbeck: it’s been tough

Danny Welbeck’s first start of the season saw him remind people of his quality, scoring twice to send the Gunners on their way to a 5-0 win over Southampton in the FA Cup last night.

It’s been a long road to recovery though for the England man, sidelined since last April with a damaged meniscus. The positive news though is that he has returned ahead of schedule, and he looks like a player ready to make up for lost time.

Speaking after the game, he acknowledged that it’s been a difficult time for him.

“It was obviously good to be back out on the pitch after such a long time out,” he said. “It’s been a tough few months.

“I think because I had this experience before, coming back from an injury, I kind of knew what to expect even though it’s a tough time.

“The end game is to be back out on the pitch and playing in the first team and I got that opportunity today.

“I’m certainly looking forward to doing it many more times.”

Welbeck, and the likes of Lucas Perez and hat-trick hero Theo Walcott, showed there’s some real depth in the Arsenal squad this season. Hopefully that augurs well for some of the big games we have coming up.

Boss sell Sanchez, no need for him anymore 🙂

Wele might have stolen the show with two great finishes, but let’s not forget what an underrated signing Perez has been for us.

Brilliant workhorse. Superb mentality.

You are right about both Welbz and Perez. Perez is finding his rhythm in terms of intricate play with teammates and deft passing and is such an intelligent player who also has a temper I appreciate. Danny is to me one of the toughest, hardest working players on the squad and I believe will come right over the long haul for Arsenal in a big way if he can remain healthy. If you look at the two of them together I think they cost in total 33 million pounds, which nowadays is a bargain. What I find especially exciting is… Read more »

True dat.
I feel Lukas should be starting more often, especially given the fact that he is touching his 30’s and was acquired as a ‘finished product’.
If ever Wenger was guilty of anything, it’s the restraint that he shows in incorporating the new recruits in the starting eleven.

I dream of an attacking quartet of Alexis, Welbz, Lucas and Ozil.

his passing/crossing with that left foot are Ozil-like at times. Great vision as well. I just hope he doesn’t get pissed off at his lack of playing time.

Chelsea play Liverpool before us so they could drop 6 points this week. LiverPOOP at least have Mane coming back to face ChelSKI.

Tarsenal

Dat guy was his usual industrious self. He deserved the slice of luck in finishing the second goal.
Always get the sense that he’s an intelligent and disciplined version of Alexis in the way he presses the opponents when not in possession.

Hope the brace gives him the confidence to get back to his devastating best.

If ever there was a LANS…

Wellbeck is a Gooner! Even he born in Manchester and was theirs. I never felt so proud of an Arsenal. Love that he is ours now..just wish he stay fit and make himself a legend at our Club

In today’s high prices ,for 33 million you get perez…wellbeck ,great bit of bussiness by wenger.considering evertons lukaku was valued over 50 millon .I would take either of our lads over lukaku..

Citeh spent 90 million pounds on Stones and Mangala and still don’t have back line. Rob Holding (for something like 2 million) looks a better prospect than both.

Much prefer Arsenal’s strategy in making stars and not necessarily trying to buy them.

He’s the excellent blend of Alexis and Giroud isn’t he? And he has that old United graft. Like the way he’s so direct and the work rate is excellent. We have some excellent choices for up front now. Giroud, Welbeck, Alexis, Lucas, Walcott. Mix and match. It really doesn’t matter because they can all interchange position. Giroud is perhaps the most static option but he can break the door down for you. With teams that come at us believing they are our equal, we will find a lot of joy between the lines regardless. Welbeck can develop into something special… Read more »
