In the aftermath of the 2-1 win over Chelsea to win the FA Cup on Saturday, it become obvious that there were parallels between Aaron Ramsey’s winner and that of Alan Sunderland in the 1979 final.
On that day, all those years ago, Man United had just equalised, but straight from kick off Liam Brady fed Graham Rix down the left hand side, he crossed to the back post and Sunderland scored the winner.
This year, the timing of the goal – just 22 seconds after kick-off – is almost identical, and it was a cross from the left that won us the game.

What does it all mean though?
Nothing. Except that we won the cup.
And winning the cup is good.
We won the cup..
At their Shithole
We won OUR cup. I said earlier in the season that I wanted my FA Cup back.
Now I have it. Thanks Rambo.
Feels great to have won, especially as I was pessimistic before the match.
I watched the 1979 match and the up then down then up was incredibly large, given it was right at the end of the match, we had conceded two goals so were looking like we might lose, and in extra time, and when we scored there was no time for United to come back.
Both are great Arsenal moments and results.
That’s absolutely wonderfully crazy seeing those cut together like that.
That is awesome
Now that Spurs play at Wembley, does that mean we’ve won 2 league titles AND an FA Cup at their place?
3 FA cups technically…
I met Alan Sunderland a couple of years ago. He is living in my home country of Malta and is a regular tennis player at a club. My girlfriend’s mother works at the club and she knows him well so she set up a surprise dinner with him. Safe to say I was thrilled. We had dinner together and discussed recent on goings at Arsenal. Fantastic bloke. Very nice man. He even signed a couple of photos of the winning goal for me.
Yeah i posted the same on sat after rambos goal. 1979 revisited. Good times indeed.
Does this mean that the man who played the pass that led to the pass leaves again? I guess Liam waited a year before bouncing, but still.
3 FA cups in 4 years. Not a bad new minimum standard to set.
What’s that the media use to say about the 4th place trophy again?
Spurts can have their second best trophy.
We make history. 13 now and 7 for Wenger which is equal or more than what Liverpool have won ever!
A week or two ago, people were all moaning about how rubbish we are. We played Chelsea off the park. What we lack is consistency.
Funny until I saw jennings in that clip I had forgotten all the times I had enjoyed watching pat jennings and even david seamen over the years brought back lots of fond memories
Ah blogs – yeah – so sweet. Well spotted, and the ’79 game was the deal sealer to me being afflicted with goonerism for the rest of my life!
What does it mean, though?
Nothing.
We won the cup.
Heh 🙂
just how did giroud whip it in with so much curl on the ball.
every time I see it it feels like cahill will be blocking the ball for a corner.
just like I am sure the liverpool player will pinch the ball off Michael Thomas as he holds on to the ball for ever before shooting.
We finished 7th in ’79 btw. But no one gives a shit about that – WE WON THE CUP!!!
