Arsene Wenger says Aaron Ramsey looks more composed in front of goal this season after the Welsh midfielder netted his third in the Premier League to bring up his half-century in Arsenal colours.
The 26-year-old converted Sead Kolasinac’s cut-back to seal a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Swansea; a strike that earned him warm words from the boss who was impressed by the player’s attacking intent throughout the match.
“It’s fantastic,” said Wenger of Rambo’s 50th goal for the Gunners. “When you look at the video of the game again, you see that Aaron Ramsey is always in the box.
“Many times he could not finish but this season he is calmer with his finishing and what he did today will give him more confidence. I think there are some goals in him.”
Yesterday’s goal by Ramsey, his 32nd in the Premier League, takes him above Sylvain Wiltord and makes him Arsenal’s 12th leading league scorer of the ‘since football was invented in 1992’ era.
Arsenal’s other goalscorer, Sead Kolasinac, also notched his third goal of the season when he hammered home an equaliser just after half time.
Granit Xhaka says he’s been impressed by what he’s seen of the Bosnian bulldozer
“We know that Seo has so much quality in attack, just as he does defensively,” Granit Xhaka told Arsenal Player.
“His goal and assist were crucial for the team and we hope he continues to perform like that.
“We make it easy for him, he was accepted instantly and we knew already how strong he is.
“That he’s that dangerous in front of goal, we didn’t see so often in Germany! But it’s going well here in England and we’re pleased to have him.”
Is it wise for Arsène to praise Ramsey attacking and say “it’s fantastic…Aaron Ramsey is always in the box?”
I mean, we need him playing in the midfield against City.
Or 4 at the back and another body in midfield.
Otherwise ‘more goals from Ramsey’ won’t always mean us scoring the goals.
But Ramsey was not only in the box yesterday. Overall he had a good game. He is not a defensive midfielder but then we don’t have any of those.
we really should free ramsey . i know he is a bit divisice figure amoung here , but i really think he is a wonderful player . not a lot of players scores 50 goals from midfield , that just shows his quality . he might not create lot of chances like ozil . thats because he is a different kind of player , more a goal scoring midfielder and less like ozil . and we should let him play like that , instead of holding him back back. just like delle alli we should let him play little higher… Read more »
If we lose Ozil and Sanchez, then let’s at least explore Jack and Ramsey in the 2 no.10s and get a super combative box to boxpower midfielder to play along with Xhaka. Freeing both Xhaka and Ramsey.
i would’ve loved a formation similar to this
lacazette
sanchez, ramsey
kolasinac ,elneny, wilshere , bellerin
or
sanchez,lacazette,iwobi
wilshere,xhaka,ramsey
kolasinac,koscielny,holding,bellerin
That’s the first suggestion on how to fit Ramsey and Wilshere in a team together that actually looks plausible. Wilshere in Sanchez’ role and Ramsey in Ozil’s. With Lacca, our two excellent wing-backs, Xhaka+Someone as pure CM midfielders that would actually make a balanced team. We really, really need a complete, combatitive central midfielder there though to balance it out though.
I’m also still hoping to get to see Coq and Santi as CM’s this season 🙂
I sort of agree… But then it feels like he needs to blow even less of his clear cut chances. What are his finishing stats this season, anyone?
One thing that I feel he’s better at this season is turnovers (again subjectively, stats?). He, Wilshere, Xhaka and Özil generally has a propensity of “falling over” on the ball, without getting anything. (Then leisurely and annoyingly taking a few too many seconds to get up.)
The midfielders who are REALLY good on the ball – i.e. Cazorla – very seldom loses the ball without beeing fouled. A really important defensive skill.
Ramsey will always get into the positions to score so yes it’s true. Just wished he was more clinical in front of goal since he will miss a few chances in good positions. Still think he’s a great player for us
Its not just Ramsey but the entire forward line can also afford to be far more clinical. We create plenty of chances but conspire to also miss a huge amount.
When we don’t put them away, we leave the defense open to mishaps we are nominally prone to and we let the other side back in it.
When you look at the video of the game.. he is always in the box!???
Is that Arsene being sarcastic? God knows?
Arsene doesnt do sarcasm.
That is a real praise.
As such, either we benefit from his position in the box, by scoring.
Or we are opened up like knife thruough butter in midfield, and overwork the 3 defenders behind Xhaka
You are actually wrong. Aw probably uses sarcasm more than any other manager. It’s difficult to know if he was being sarcastic in this case as he is very subtle in the use of it.
Im very proud of Aaron………brilliant performance again yesterday.
Wenger praising Ramsey saying he is always in the box.
Xhaka might as well get ready to deal with 2 City midfielders all on his own for 80 odd minutes now.
Yup, like a red rag to a bull
Why don’t we just get a proper midfielder and let Ramsey fight it out with the strikers for game time? I knew this was going to be said as soon as that goal went in yesterday, never mind that Swansea were running through the midfield unchallenged and Granite and the centre backs were outnumbered time and time again. Ramsey has got to be our most irritating player.
Pretty obvious he plays according to instructions
Then Arsene might as well get ready for a shitstorm the moment Ramsey’s positioning leads us to concede .
Letting Ramsey move forward with Xhaka as the other midfielder is nothing short of shooting yourself in the foot, especially considering they are our first choice pairing atm
Effectively, we are playing with 1 in midfield in granit. I think this is the case against sides like Swansea who will encamp a row of 4 and 5 in front of us. Wenger prefers us hunting and adding numbers higher up. In this instance, in the current 3-4-3 system, one of the Cbacks will push forward next to Granit to make a difference in the middle. BUT Per has his limitations and knows it and tends to sit deeper. With Mustafi, we have a more aggressive player who will push up to patrol alongside Granit. So at present we… Read more »
Pretty obvious he lacks the discipline to play any other way (except when we play another big side; then miraculously he is positionally disciplined and switched on defensively).
he was beast vs chelsea he stoped their midfiled was desciined and very sound defensevly. We need his runs in the box vs lesser teams but vs the top4 we need him playing exactly like he played vs chelsea. hope and believe tha that is his role instructions given from wenger, make runs in th box and score vs lesser teams play disciplened and protect the back 3 vs the big boys. hope to see that next weekend.
You mean, it’s almost like he gets forward against weaker teams and plays more conservatively against better ones? That moron!
Yeah I don’t think it’s really a debate now, Wenger is clearly a fan of those runs
There fucking better be with the amount of time he spends in the opposition box.
If we lose Ozil next year, I think Rambo is a natural replacement for him in the front three. He may not create as many chances as Mesut – few can – but he can make up for it with his workrate and willingness to play the pressing game. His ability to find the open spaces and put himself in good positions is uncanny – and completely wasted in a deep lying midfield role.
Yea, like ozil created chances against Swansea, off-topic, but, ozil shined against a 10-man low morale Everton, the only plus in d game was that he scored, he always goes around passing even when he should shoot. And u say he creates chances, Ramsey is better in his position, and Wilshere is best in dat Ozil role,
False.
Ozil has created more chances than anyone in the entire league, if we were burying these chances he’d be considered a god
Good finish yesterday by Rambo. Glad it was a game winner rather than his usual consolation Arsenal 4th or 5th goal late in a game.
Saying that, his conversion rate needs to be better if we are to achieve our goals as s club. He always seems to get 4 or 5 good shooting chances in the box.
We need him to be a Killer in the box!
@ Dholio..Yeah if only he could, I dunno, score the winner in a cup final or something…
Or two even …. City will be quaking in their pink boots for our visit. Saed will tear Kevin De Browneye a new one.
There are a lot of potential goals for Ramsey. His instinct is to attack the box. He constantly gets himself in great positions. If he (and the others) converts more chances (which we should), we will finish off the opponents before they can gain/regain confidence and negate our propensity for lapses at the back. Whether he is the right partner deep in midfield next to Granit is of course a different thing. OTOH I don’t feel we play with too much rigidity. Unless we have to play tougher opponents, we seem to give free reign to Ramsey to push forward… Read more »
You are often praised for your brevity, aren’t you?
The thing about Ramsey’s position is its the most interpretive. More than any other position, it needs maturity and discipline but also intuition to know when to push forward and add numbers critically and when to adopt caution and stay deep. BUT its not only beholden on Ramsey to cover the space around Granit. Its a team effort which also involves the other mids (Ozil, Alexis) to watch his runs and be prepared to cover AND the wingbacks/Cbacks. There’s no easy solution. If we want to reap the benefits of free style unpredictability going forward, we need the discipline of… Read more »
Sead is our own Incredible Hulk.
He’s definitely a cut above the other wingbacks at present. Looking at that list of Arsenal league goal scorers makes you appreciate how lucky we were to have Robert and Freddie in the team at the same time. It’s no coincidence that when they left so did our form. If only Hector could get closer and block crosses when defending like he used to we’d be halfway to a decent pair that can both attack and defend.
“When you look at the video of the game again, you see that Aaron Ramsey is always in the box.”
That’s a major reason for our midfield woes is it not? The fact Wenger is pleased confirms Ramsey is just playing to instruction.
I like his finish against Swansea. But I’m not keeping my hopes up. Gotta stay real.
