Arsene Wenger has ruled Alexandre Lacazette out of Saturday’s clash with Manchester United after the striker sustained an injury in the 5-0 win over Huddersfield.
The French international, who opened the scoring in the third minute, took a knock in the first half and was replaced at the break by Olivier Giroud.
Speaking afterwards, the Arsenal boss had an update on the club’s record signing and the news wasn’t good.
“Lacazette has a groin problem and he will be out certainly for Saturday’s game,” he said.
“He might be out for a while.”
It means he’s got to make a big decision about how to replace him. Olivier Giroud came on and scored twice, a real boost to his confidence, while Danny Welbeck is often given the nod against his old club because of the extra motivation he has to stick it to them.
The other option is to play Alexis Sanchez up there, and use Welbeck or Alex Iwobi in one of the wide positions, but he’s got some time to consider his options before Saturday.

How exactly has lacazette played too much? He hasn’t played any midweek games and hasn’t played 90 mins since opening day. Sometimes injuries happen and it isn’t wenger’s fault

I would go with Welbeck up front (or Sanchez as ST with Welbeck just behind). He always performs against United and we can still play a similarly to how we would have if Lacazette had been available. Playing Giroud would mean switching our style of play.

I see where you’re coming from but I think he wouldn’t want them getting the boost immediately before kick off of seeing there’s no lacazette.
Has to be Sanchez, Welbeck, Özil. I would give Welbeck a chance upfront instead of Sanchez who seems to struggle there this season. 1% of me hopes this is just mind games by Wenger.

welbeck starting is a huge gamble. Iwobi just hasn’t been good enough yet and is a defensive liability.

Well the good news is we have a thing called squad depth. Something we haven’t always had and it will come in handy for Saturday. We have giroud who scored twice tonight and will be useful at holding the ball up something we will probably need more of in the second half so I would start a front three of alexis up top Ozil on the right and welbeck on the left and then we always have giroud on the bench for the last 20-25 minutes. Hopefully lacazette isn’t out for too long though.
If Iwobi plays, we lose 3-1. If Giroud plays we draw 2-2.
So, what score if they both play?
Please keep Iwobi on the bench!!!

Giroud scores 2 goals and therefore would it seems be the obvious choice to replace Lacazette, but I’m hoping that Wenger goes with Welbeck to start vs ManU.
That sucks, I’d be tempted to go with Welbeck in place of Laca so we can start fast and press them and then bring Grioud in with 30 to go or so and do what he does best. I don’t think he has played as well when he has started as he does when he comes off of the bench. Either Welbeck can go up top or Sanchez can and Welbeck in Sanchez’s spot.
Given the oppo it’s gotta be Welbeck IMO – he’ll be jumping out of his skin against United.

Shit happens. He took a risk playing him and it backfired. It is hard to say that it was a terrible decision giving how careful Wenger has been managing Lacazette.
You cannot legislate for everything. I’d rather have Lacazette play but with the competition we have the two other centre-forwards will be champing at the bit to play and it might well pay off.
