Report: Arsenal 5-0 Huddersfield (inc goals)

Arsenal: Cech, Koscielny, Mustafi, Monreal, Bellerin, Ramsey, Xhaka, Kolasinac, Alexis, Ozil, Lacazette

Subs: Ospina, Mertesacker, Coquelin, Wilshere, Iwobi, Welbeck, Giroud

Arsenal made it seven wins from seven at home this season as a second half flurry helped them a 5-0 win over Huddersfield at the Emirates this evening.

Arsene Wenger made only one change from the team which beat Burnley on Sunday, recalling well again Mesut Ozil in place of Alex Iwobi.

The Gunners wanted a good start and that’s exactly what they got. Aaron Ramsey flicked on a Granit Xhaka pass into the path of Alexandre Lacazette and the French international took it on drilled a left-footed shot into the net to open the scoring in the third minute. 1-0.

Ramsey was next to have a pop, firing over the bar first time from outside the box, and great build up play saw Sead Kolasinac get in behind but the Bosnian took the wrong option with his final pass, letting the visitors off the hook.

Arsenal were in confident mood, dominating possession, but David Wagner’s side settled down and worked hard to deny the home side the chances they wanted. A set piece gave Jorgensen the chance to head over, a bit of a warning sign, while at the other end a lovely turn should have given Alexis a chance to hit the target but he miskicked allowing the defender to clear.

More fine build up and good work from Lacazette almost produced a second goal, his floated effort from a tight angle was cleared off the line and Kolasinac couldn’t put the rebound home under pressure.

Mustafi saved Xhaka’s bacon after the midfielder underhit a pass and gave Huddersfield a sniff of forward momentum, and more carelessness almost cost us when Mounie went down in the box but the referee was having none of it. Only for a superb Koscielny block, another wasteful passage of play would have seen an equaliser borne out of a complete lack of concentration.

Xhaka smashed a shot miles over from 35 yards as Arsenal grew frustrated with their inability to break down the deep-lying defence, and there was a real sense that Arsene Wenger’s men could do more as the teams went in at the break.

There was an Arsenal change at half-time with Olivier Giroud replacing Lacazette. The goalscorer had picked up a knock midway through the opening 45 minutes and with Man Utd at the weekend it was hopefully precautionary from the manager.

A lovely run from Alexis saw him to create a chance for Ozil, but the German took a touch close to goal and that allowed the defender to close him down and make the block. There were still moments of carelessness from Arsenal, but Huddersfield remained unable to take full advantage.

Poor play from Kolasinac ended up with Quarner driving towards goal and forcing Cech into a very good save with his feet to keep the scores level, and the Arsenal keeper saved the day again when he had to scramble to punch the ball over after Monreal had produced an excellent block to deny Kachunga.

There were shouts for an Arsenal penalty for handball but it looked ball to hand and the officials played on, and moments later the lead should have been doubled when Ramsey played in Giroud and when the Frenchman went around the keeper his shot rebounded back off the post from a tight angle.

Alexis combined well with Kolasinac but fired over the bar from inside the area, the Chilean failed to find Ramsey after the Welshman had made a good run, and there was more danger at the Arsenal end but once again the visitors failed to make the most of it.

The Gunners weren’t quite living dangerously, but they were far from convincing either and with just a one goal lead the game was on something of a knife-edge. That was until the long-awaited second goal finally came.

Ozil was the key man, starting the move with a beautiful flick on the wing, then playing a one-two with Alexis to get into the box and squaring for Giroud who tucked it away at the near post to make it 2-0.

That seemed to spark the Gunners into life, and when Ramsey’s perfect pass played Ozil down inside right channel, the German’s cross was swept into the net by Alexis and it was 3-0 Arsenal.

It didn’t stop, this time it was Ramsey who turned provider, slipping a beautiful pass to Ozil who clipped it over the keeper to make it 4-0 and three goals in four minutes.

That prompted Arsene Wenger into making his final two changes, bringing on Danny Welbeck and Jack Wilshere for Ramsey and Sanchez, and it was a brilliant period of play from Arsenal with Ozil providing a goal and two assists in such a short amount of time.

Xhaka tried to get in on the act, curling over from distance, and got one on target but it was easy for the keeper. Great movement and interplay from Ozil fed Kolasinac whose low cross was fired over by Giroud, but the duo combined again a few minutes later and the Frenchman fired into the net from close range to make it 5-0.

Huddersfield had a late free kick from just outside the box but it was fired over with Cech seeing it all the way, and the game entered three minutes of added time with little more to add what had already taken place apart from a free kick which went out for a corner.

In the end the biggest win of the season so far, and a very nice way to prepare for United at the weekend.

Well done lads, slaughtered them. 4 points behind Sp*rs to 4 points in front in the space of three matches. Roll on Man U, let’s do the same to them.

Gunnerelite

Left footed lesson:

7 – left footed players for Arsenal simultaneously from the moment Aron Ramsey was replaced.
4 – left footed goals scored by the Arsenal
3 – left footed assists by Arsenal
2 – goals assisted and scored by the left footed players
1 – left footed players who scored a brace
1- left footed player who both assisted and scored with a left foot

Clock-End Mike

Very interesting but not actually a reply to Paul’s comment?

lee dicks on

Not actually a question?

husni

“Got enough left footers mate?”…..

James

We played with a lot of POWER and really SHIFTed through the gears at the end.

husni

Anyone else noticed that at some point in the game we had 7 left footed players on the pitch (cech, monreal, kolasinac , xhaka, jack, ozil, giroud) must be some kind of record

Ed the Red

It’s rather sinister if you ask me.

A Different George

You left that late.

78/79/80

I think Gunnerelite might have ^^^^

PeteyB

I think Gunnerelite was cheeky and posted his comment later but in reply to an unrelated early one so as to pin his comment further up the page, thus making husni look like a mug.

David C

but who had the better flick: Ramsey with his right or Ozil with his left?

Sad that Laca is out against Man U…

Flashmob

Ozil in the Zone!!!

GunneRon

Ozil and Lacazette were magnificent today. But special praise also for Ramsey whose lively and dynamic performance in midfield is part of the reason why we’ve managed to turn it around in recent weeks. Now bring on the mancs on Sunday !!

Damobot

Ahhhh, the good ol’ Daysssss!!!!! how we missed you!!!!

jack jack jack

WENGERBALL making a much-awaited return. How much I’ve missed you.

Dave

Hahahahahahaha Sp*rs. Hope we keep the intensity high for Manure. COYG!

GunneRon

Can’t stop laughing at shitty sp*rs whose power shifting performances lately has seen them drop from 4th to 7th, behind Burnley. Haha !

cygan\'sbaldspot

Ozil is painfully good. Would rather keep him over alexis, who has been dreadful this season, lets face it. he clearly stopped trying ages ago. In reality we’ll probably keep neither but I think there is a glimmer of hope that Mesut stays…

yen

He scored one and was crucial in the build up for another. If that means he stopped trying, I’m very much ok with it.

Damobot

Looks like they are interchanging the form. Alexis was at it against spurs though. he needs to get back to basics to regain his form. I wouldn’t be able to choose between an inform Alexis and an inform Ozil, impossible. I’ll take both when they are at it !!!

Don Cazorleone

well luckily we currently have both!

best case scenario? Arsene signs a worldie in January and it makes Alexis and Mesut sign new contracts

B A C K T O B A S I C S

BACK TO BASICS BACK TO BASICS BACK TO BASICS BACK TO BASICS. Fuck me am I tired of hearing the same meaningless platitudes. Ramsay dip in form? Back to basics. Walcott not finishing? Back to basics. Bellerin not replicating the same form as his breakthrough season? Back to basics. Has anyone ever described a title winning side as ‘basic’? When a player actually performs well do we praise them for getting the basics right? No, we praise them for playing as top-drawer performers, who have the ‘basics’ ironed out at the age we are still figuring out how to carry… Read more »

Flummoxed

Well when it comes to redeveloping muscle memory and trying to get yourself out of a funk, overthinking is the enemy. So it’s usually helpful to ground yourself in…(you know whats coming) THE BASICS.

Sully Taylor

Bravo! (claps with tears in eyes)

Damobot

He is doing a lot of things wrong so needs to start doing one thing right at the time then increase his confidence and add one more, etc. Like getting his passing and ball retention right before his vision for long range passing and finally shooting and dribbling. You will be surprised to learn how quick a world class can sometimes lose those somewhat basic skills.

Martin

Worked as hard as he always does. There are none so blind as those who will not see

Andy Mack

If you think Alexis has stopped trying then Football clearly isn’t your game (or you’re just s troll). Alexis has been ‘off form’ for the last 12 months odd but he puts the effort in pretty much every single one of those games.

yen

Great confidence boost. Hope Lacazette is ok. United next!

yen

Oh dear, AW just confirmed Lacazette is out for Saturday with a groin problem. C’mon Oli!

Joe

Come on Welbz!

Clock-End Mike

AW said after the match “it looked like a groin injury so he might be out for a while”. Hope that’s not the case.

jeff

Fantastic performance from Rambo tonight!

spanish gooner

Fuck it, we can beat United and Özil will see who is the better team & sign

ramgooner

I don’t mind a bit of Flamini to keep Ozil. #BringbackFlam

Badaab

Fantastic result from the team, and nice to see Mesut Ozil enjoying his football. There will be a lot of calls for him to be given MOTM, and rightly so. You could also say that Giroud deserves MOTM, as he scored 2, and changed the entire game when he came on. Same goes for Aaron Ramsey, who had a hand in the first 4 goals, including 2 assists and 2 key passes. Huddersfield were shite on the evening, and deserved to lose. Their supporters will no doubt whinge about a penalty in the first half not being given, but there… Read more »

eternalflamini

That 20 minute spell from Ozil… bloody he’ll, what can you actually say?

yen

I guess you can say “sign da ting already!”

Rich

Thought we were brilliant for first 35min then we went full Arsenal until we scored the second goal.
Xhaka and Mustafi’s passing went awol and it wasn’t even a Huddersfield pressing us, just plain sloppy.
After the second it was a joy to watch again, played some brilliant stuff.
Happy days ?

555

Big win for the lads. Scary end to first half. Wenger has gotten his dressing room 15 mins pep talk right again. My only worry is Lacazzette being substituted. Hope we can get a win against united. North London remains red.
COYG.

555

Hopefully, we can make it 13 consecutive home win against united to equal their record.
Well done lads. Ozil MOTM. Wenger in!
COYG.

Sir Henry Norris\'s Brown Envelope

This “North London is Red” is quite silly. It’s an admission that the rest of London has something we won’t admit. I would prefer that we drop the “North” from that slogan and replace it with….”Europe”???

Young Arsene

” Europe London is red” really?

Goonerink

Its freezing right now, and probably the first time this season its been so cold.
Which i would say is the reason we were so sloppy for 50 minutes.

great to watch us playing like arsenal again.

ramgooner

Giroud brace as I predicted in the pre match thread. COYG.

Bob Loblaw

Ozil putting on a show for prospective new club.
Fantastic performance nonetheless

Andy Mack

I guess he could move to Huddersfield, but I’d be surprised…

Victor

Well won. Ozil imperious. Wilshere getting into his groove. A brace for OG12. A Lacazette peach. Good times.

Bob Loblaw

Ozil putting on a show for prospective new club. Fantastic performance nonetheless

Martin

He’s a true professional and did it for us. No need for that.

Goonerrific

#powershift. Mwahahaha!

eternalflamini

Also having Giroud on the bench to replace your main striker is a luxury no english team barring man city has.

Awesomesauce25

However Man U does have Ibra who, when healthy, can certainly be influential.

AKB Gunner

Yeah, but does that guy look as good as Giroud!!! ??

Alexstratz

Well that was fun.

Highbury

There is something so typically Arsenal about playing such careless, uninspired and, frankly, frustratingly poor football for much of the game, yet still managing a 5-0 win and showcasing incredible footballing talent. Özil’s push was immense.

Matt

#powershift? What #powershift? Mind the Gap. That’s an 8 pt swing in our favour, Spuds! ?

I AM ARSENAL

Invasion of the left peggers

DBMÖ10

Not putting down wilshere , he’s our lad and extremely talented. But can we really look at him as an Özil replacement ? Fit or not, let’s be honest. Jack is no where near Özil and we would definitely have to delve in the market if the German doesn’t sign.

Martin

He’s never been considered as a replacement for Ozil. Totally different types of players

DBMÖ10

Totally different type of no. 10s but no. 10s indeed. Wenger himself said a couple of years ago that the closer Jack is to the goal, the better. So yeah even the manager sees him as a 10. For me I’d play him in the Ramsey role, but Rambo’s playing great there recently.

Andy Mack

There are different types of No10…

iamtheantisp*r

So much fun but I’ll comment on the excellent, subtle, almost hidden hashtag at the very end. Well played, Blogs.

Alexstratz

Lacazette out with a groin injury. Will probably miss some crucial matches like United and Liverpool.

Marcus

So pleased with the result. Despite the 1-0, it was very even for 45 minutes and some sloppy play from our side could have made it a more difficult night. In the end, we upped our game beautifully and completely hammered our opponents. The combination play was fantastic and Cech was crucial when it mattered. Added bonus: Martin Tyler and Alan Smith being upset Huddersfield couldn’t deliver an upset – at 4-0 they said “the scoreline is deceptive”. Let’s keep the run going against United, COYG!!

Polskibear

I think Laca did his groin trying to scoop that ball over their goalkeeper that was then cleared off the line. It would have been a great goal too.

Fuhgedaboudit l

Saturday’s game can be the perfect example of having depth on the team. With Lacazette appearing to be out for the game, Giroud can step in and do the job. That’s what I love about Giroud. He never complains or sulks, and when called upon comes in and does the job, not to mention usually scores. Gotta love him. Real team player, and has quality. Not a coincidence he is listed ahead of Lacazette on the a French team. Feel he never gets the credit he deserves by Arsenal fans.

Arses \'r\' Us

#ArsePower
When Ozil plays like he plays for Germany,
When Ramsey plays like he does for Wales,
When Alexis wants to hug the whole team every time someone scores,
When there even is an “everytime someone scores”
-and keep a clean sheet, too.
Fuck, let’s do it again.

Ausdrexler

I am claiming I helped Arsenal score those 3 goals in that 5 minute period. How I hear you say? Well…. I was watching the game and needed to go get ready for work. So upstairs I go, tablet in hand watching the game. I thought, struth I need to go to the dunny and choke one out. So here I am, on the toilet doing my business. I thought to myself it was higher quality then the Arsenal attack. By the time I had finished my journey, the guys had responded to my claims they were ‘crap’ by scoring… Read more »
