Arsene Wenger says last season’s loan spell at Middlesbrough has helped Calum Chambers grow in confidence.
The 22-year-old made 24 appearances in the Premier League for Boro earning plaudits for his performances despite the Teeside outfit going down.
While the early part of the current campaign proved frustrating, a hip injury ruling him out of action between September and November, the England international has managed to force his way back into first team reckoning, initially via the Carabao Cup and Europa League and more recently in the Premier League.
“He’s done well – he’s more mature,” Wenger told Arsenal.com.
“[Last year at Middlesbrough] he gained the belief that you have the level to play in the Premier League, that you can do it and you get that confidence from your manager for a long period.
“That gives you confidence and from that confidence you can express your qualities. For Calum Chambers, those qualities are immense.”
Chambers could well start his third consecutive game this evening against Chelsea with Laurent Koscielny, Sead Kolasinac and Nacho Monreal all struggling with injury.
Again a very strange story………a young lad purchased as a CB and quickly fed to the lines at RB (he finally lost all confidence one terrible afternoon v a tricky Swansea winger), and that was it for God knows how long, well, until now actually, where hes “got his confidence back”, meaning what exactly, cause I cant work Wenger out anymore.

It was probably Wenger he destroyed it in the first place with his tendency to play players out of position..
Some silly comments here. He primarily played as a RB for Southampton.
Funny thing is that players seem to play well this season after a break. Would have never imagined mustafi play like he did against spurs , even ozil after chelsea match seemed like a new player. Kolasinac started well and lost his play midway but did well after his break. Ainsley looks great and that horrible liverpool game showed players away from first team seemed to have more confidence. Lacazette has been impressive even though we have not played to his strengths.
Worth noting BOTH Chambers and Iwobi are still only 22yrs.
There’s plenty of up side for these players.
Iwobi is mature for his age and his close control is potentially very useful in deeper midfield.
People were fixated by Holding (a good buy thank you David Dein) but they forget about Chambers altogether.
just goes to show you how fickle most fans are. The same fans that lauded Alexis and were down on Ozil’s throat not a couple of months back who have now reversed their tune.

It’s easy to forget that Chambers is only in his early twenties. I think it was a good decision, and an excellent show of confidence in him to give him a new contract. A whole season at Middlesborough did him a world of good. If we get all our defenders fit again, it would be nice to have Holding go on a 6-month loan to a Premier League side for the rest of the season. Some continuity at their age is absolutely essential for their development.
Is it just me or is Chambers really slow? Frankly I can’t see him turning out to be a top defender for us, good defender yes, but too many question marks really to bee heir to Bosscielny
