Arsenal have announced that young goalkeeper Matt Macey has joined Plymouth Argyle on loan for the 2018-19 season.
The 23 year old has previously had loan spells at Accrington Stanley and Luton Town and will spend this campaign with the League One side hoping to play regularly and gain more first team experience.
Macey made two appearances last season, one in the Europa League and one in the Carabao Cup, and becomes the first goalkeeping departure of the summer.
The club signed Bernd Leno from Bayer Leverkusen for £22.5m, and also have Petr Cech and David Ospina on the books – although the latter is expected to finalise to a move to Besiktas in the near future.
They also handed a new long-term deal to 23 year old Deyan Iliev last week, so we’re pretty well covered in this position.
Good luck to Matt Macey, we’ll keep an eye on his progress as the new season gets underway.
Good luck to him.
Sadly, we’re so stacked in the GK department, I’m not convinced he’ll make it. Hard enough competing with guys like Leno or even Martinez who are just a years older, but also has to deal with the likes of Virginia, who’s basically our new Chezny (just returned with a medal at the u19 Euros).
What is going on in the GK department. You would think we would have gotten rid of at least two young guys considering how many we have. But if one gamble pays off I suppose it would be worth the investment considering the current market. (probably)
I suggest you use words like ”release”, ”transfer” instead of ”get rid of”.
Why?
Wouldn’t it be smarter to just sell them to a half decent side with a buyback clause instead of loaning them out into their twenties to clubs that don’t have a real motive to play them over the GK they already own. I mean Pickford is the best current English gk and thats due to alot of first team action at the top level. You can’t simulate that in training. If some one can give me a reason how what we’re doing now is better please do
Dat guy! Agree100%
You forgot to mention Emiliano Martinez or has he been sold?
Nope he played against PSG in the second half.
Good stuff, look forward to him progressing then coming back and challenging.
I like him and that is a good move for him as he needs games. Him and Martinez are the only two reasons that I wasn’t so excited with Leno. I want our young guns to succeed and we are doing pretty well in the youth goalkeeping department. We also have Joao Virginia in the youth ranks who I believe he can become a quality keeper. We were holding on to Ospina for too long. We also need to loan Martinez (unless he wants to stay) somewhere where he will play regulary and then at the end of the season… Read more »
Good luck little dude.
It’s definitely the best thing for him as he’ll get game time which would be unavailable at Arsenal. Rather hoping we settle on Cech, Leno and Martinez – retaining Macey as a possibility for the future (i.e. when Cech retires – which I presume will be at the end of the season). With thanks for his great performances over the years, I think it’s time for Ospina to move on.
Agreed, there’s no point having three first team keepers, it blocks the way for the youngsters- we have too many of them too quite honestly
I don’t think there is any way Cech will retire at the end of the season. He’ll probably play until he’s 40.
Side note: We might actually the amazingly prestigious International Champions Cup if we win against Chelsea. Screw the League, we have the ICC!
I think Macey’s a better keeper than Martinez based on the handful of games and highlights I’ve seen. So I’m kind of glad it’s him going on loan to develop rather than spending the season as 3rd choice getting the odd league cup and u23 game. As long as the club doesn’t forget about him which is always a risk, even if he has a successful loan
That’s a very poor judgement to base on though…
Maybe. On the other hand I’ve seen Martinez loads of times and he isn’t very good
The first thing that comes into my head when thinking of Martinez is that “save” against Reading in the League Cup.
To be fair, he’s looked fairly decent in recent times, just that he seems to have a propensity for pushing saves into dodgy areas.
Slightly related , why is Martinez hellbent on Stuart Taylor-ing his career ?
Martinez hasn’t look bad in pre-season.
I wouldn’t say Leno is shoe in for first spot either.
The competition is great for us.
Cech is an excellent stalwart meanwhile and can further impart experience to BOTH the aspirants.
Very interesting.
