Arsenal have given an update on the injury sustained by Danny Welbeck against Sporting last week, revealing the player has had a second surgery on his broken ankle.
An update from the medical team reads:
Further to sustaining an injury last Thursday against Sporting CP, Danny has undergone a second planned operation on his right ankle.
Both procedures went well, without complications. Danny will now recuperate and start his rehabilitation. It’s too early to say how long this will take.
Unquestionably though, we’re talking about months out of the game, and with rehab, rebuilding his fitness and all the rest, it wouldn’t be a surprise if a comeback this season was too soon for him.
Obviously it would be great to see him back before the end of this campaign, particularly given his contractual situation, but in the meantime Unai Emery will have to consider how he fills the gap in the squad that the England international has left.
His versatility in the forward positions is really useful, and with only Eddie Nketiah now as a back-up striker, the Arsenal boss will have plenty of thinking to do when it comes to his team selections.
Big loss as I felt he’d stepped up this season.
As always, best wishes for a speedy recovery.
I like Welbeck, his versatility is helpful. However for the long term goals of the team, we now need a proper winger. Ousmane Dembele and Malcolm were pipe dreams, but we need this type of player. Over to you Sven.
Don’t fancy Dembele. Whenever I watch him he’s infuriatingly inconsistent. Will make a fantastic run then just knock the ball straight out for a goal kick. We need an intelligent, technical winger. Mahrez would’ve been great..
Zaha. Doesn’t have the qualities you say, but we need someone who can get the ball up the pitch and someone who can beat a man (or three).
Nicholas Pepe! He should excel in front of Hector too.
Bring back Reiss Nelson!
I hope he can get back before the end of the season but something this serious will take time. I think the best we can all hope for is that he can get back into training before he is out of contract and convince Emery that he is worth a new one.
With regards to a replacement, cant we have our Nelson back!
Back just in time to bang home the winner in a cup final.
