Vivianne Miedema Voted Women’s Player of the Year

Arsenal striker Vivianne Miedema has been voted Women’s Footballer of the Year at the London Football Awards. Miedema fended off competition from teammate Jordan Nobbs, Chelsea pair So Yun Ji and Erin Cuthbert and Tottenham striker Rianna Dean to take the award.

Miedema enjoyed a fine 2018, scoring the winner in the 2018 Conti Cup Final against Manchester City and also scoring at Wembley in the 3-1 FA Cup Final defeat to Chelsea last May. But this season, the Dutch striker has come into her own, breaking the record for goals scored in a WSL season with 7 games to spare.

Miedema’s goals have spearheaded Arsenal’s title charge in 2018-19. Vivianne has also enjoyed a good year at international level, as Netherlands qualified for the 2019 World Cup in France. Miedema is only 5 goals short of her country’s goalscoring record- she doesn’t turn 23 until July.

Manager Joe Montemurro accepted the award, sponsored by the Willow Foundation, on her behalf. Miedema is currently in Portugal with her national team as they take part in the Algarve Cup. Arsenal Women’s next game is at home to Bristol City on Thursday, 14th March.

It’s crazy to think that she’s only 23! Looking forward to many more POTY awards and broken records with Arsenal.

She’s 22 until she turns 23, that’s how it works.
