Emery focused on rebuilding confidence

Unai Emery says he’s trying to rebuild Arsenal’s confidence after two defeats in a week left our Champions League hopes hanging in the balance.

An abject 3-1 defeat at Wolves on Wednesday further highlighted our woes on the road this season but there’s little time to feel sorry for ourselves before we tackle Brendan Rodgers’ Leicester at the King Power on Sunday.

Eager to gee up his beleaguered players before a vitally important tie, Emery said they should forget the past and focus on writing a new history.

“The first target is to recover our confidence,” he told his pre-game press conference.

“We can build on this confidence each minute, each hour, each day, each week – and above all we’re training and we’re looking for a big performance for the three points.

“Each team is very difficult home and away. It’s our preparation with respect but also thinking about how we can fight to battle them.

“Individually for Sunday the first target is to think in our capacity and be consistent defensively and offensively. We need to adapt to them, but I think both are very important. We need to prepare ourselves and also adapt for them.”

He added: “We can think in each moment about our performance and how we can be consistent. It’s really our way in every day and every match. Afterwards, we can think generally about the season.

“Our target is to be in the possibility to take it. We lost the last match and the match before, but our focus is on the present and on Sunday.

“If we think negatively with the last two matches, we can’t think positively about the games we won against Napoli and Watford. Each match is a new history, a new test and [a chance to move up the table or not].

“We’re being positive, working, recovering the confidence in our players and in our work. We need to be ready and look forward to playing the next match.”

I wouldn’t mind someone rebuilding the fan’s confidence – 4 PL losses in a row it would be if Deeney hadn’t got sent off, we are weak away from home and Leicester is doing well.

My confidence is very low.

Alex

That’s the problem: fans are too quick to think of themselves but slow to think of their players. Being a fan is cheering for the players and not waiting for the players to satisfy your mood.

Red-Sky

Why the down votes? Alex finally uttering something sensible.

Kwame Ampadu Down

Hard to believe it’s the same Alex who unleashes a torrent of abuse at Ramsey on a regular basis….

Owl faced Deeney's cojones

Because lot of people replace the players by Ozil as soon as they see Alex. We need to get used to Alex nouveau first. It is like those rare short comments from Santori. People find them suspicious and the very long ones are always below.

Fans are far more wedded to and invested in the future of their club than the overwhelming majority of the players will ever be.

A lot of us are looking at this season as a last chance saloon of sorts, if we can get into the CL we can get that vital cash injection that we need to start the process of becoming a competitive elite side again. If we can’t, that task becomes substantially less realistic in the short to mid term future of the club.

Kostas

My fellow Goonero. With or without CL money the board will find an excuse NOT to invest. I truly believe Kroenkes will use all of the clubs momentum to generate safe money and once it goods below 0 profits they will abandon the ship. The club is falling down at the auto pilot mode. For many years

goonero

It’s not as if I disagree with you, it’s just that I have to believe otherwise, arguably more for my own peace of mind (read mental health) than based on any evidence but still. There is absolutely no reason why at the bare fucking minimum we can’t be as good as Sp*rs. Kroenke money or not, there’s not a damn thing that club can do that we shouldn’t be able to outdo and then some. I’ve got some hope that the current regime can achieve that, but CL money (not to mention reputation and pulling power) is the factor that… Read more »

Don’t overestimate the impact of Champions League money too much. Chelsea and Man Utd will still outspend us with or without Champions League money anyway, so we’re already facing an uphill battle even if we do finish 4th this season. We need to outsmart our rivals in the market , and losing Mislintat and Ramsey has already placed us at an unnecessary massive disadvantage.

goonero

Well thats the point, we already have a hard job to do, CL money and status makes that job marginally easier.

Kostas

*Peace of mind: I know exactly what you mean!

Now that I think about it the route cause is not just the lack of investment, but the lack of ambition that starts from the top and it corroses us from the inside. Investments are just one aspect of that.
You can also observe that many players seem… effortless and settled.

Good Ebening.

V is pronounced b in Spanish so it is a natural thing to expect from a spanish person. It is nothing so weird.

momozemio

Slightly off topic, french site l’equipe juste stated that Aubam trained normally today and should be available for sunday.
It’s now or never, let’s go “all in” on our side… and wishing for some slippery from Chelsky ans Manure

Emery talks too much and most of the time his talks do not inspire! He keeps on repeating the same things! Confidence is low not only amongst the players but fans as well. Why is it that when we concede the first goal it is all over? You can see from the body language of the players. When you watch other lesser teams, they go down one goal and keep fighting…..even when it is 2 nil. Kanu did it with 15 mins to go at Stamford Bridge!! This team is spineless! They dont believe they can turn around deficits! Look at… Read more »

Minimum we should expect for an Arsenal team is to work harder than the opposition of these sorts, and the problem is more on our attack away from home. No service up front, missed chances by strikers, long and passive build up play is the worst thing.

We need wingers badly, not iwobi and mki with nacho and kolasinac/niles to feed in crosses and mess up link up play.

sambo

Ramsey was a big loss it seems. But thats how it is and i hope in the summer we can get some players in to reflect what i hope is our champions league destined squad after we come 3rd with a Europa League under our belts because the way Chelsea have played this season they definitely dont deserve it. Anyway…We need to play our best team and stick with it in my opinion…Get it done lads i believe in you! Come on Emery! Chelsea to win, Scum to lose… you heard it here first lol.

sambo

Chelsea to lose*

Gutbukkit Deffrolla

Well you got the bit about missing Ramsey right in my opinion. He’s the only direct player we have. He’s the only player outside of the two strikers who seems to know where the goal is and wants to put the bloody ball in it… and we’re letting him go with nought but a whimper. Unless we buy well with our limited funds this summer then I can see us going through next season just as listless and aimless as we were in the last two games. Sorry, but it doesn’t feel like a squad fighting for each other to… Read more »

I got the scum losing today right too haha

Santori

The less tangible side of management which is equally important to tactics and market purchases. How to coax the best out of the limits of your squad. This is where Unai will earn his keep most. Wenger had a different coddling approach to Fergie’s terror tactics. Moanrinho could never go past 3 seasons without breaking relationships (which is why he generally went to teams which could afford to buy big but they catch up with him third season when purse strings are maxed out) In Emery’s case, he has to squeeze every ounce out of a limited defense. This has… Read more »

You should write your comments in Microsoft Word first and use the word count feature to realise how annoying you are.

Merteslacker

In Santori’a defense, you can just scroll over and ignore his post…

If there was a poll of most annoying Arseblog commentators, I’d picked Fatgooner over Santori any day

So much iffing and butting everywhere regarding Mustafi. Nothing very original to add but if I were trying to be positive, i’d have to cling to the fact that he has had some very good games for us. The problem is they are interspersed with so many horror shows. Emery has to try to build him up again, in case he needs him. With four games to go, Kos has to start if he can. Soccertits, Kos and Nacho, with AMN and Kola as wing backs has been by far our most effective line up and we should play it.… Read more »

As Arsenal fans, why are we not allowed have fun? I watched Utd sinking further into shitdom of late, but alas, the old “no fun allowed “ rule for Arsenal fans immediately kicked in………as we too became the brunt of the jokes. I don’t really want us to make CL next year…….we will not be able for it……standard is just too high. And yes Spuds are in the semi final of the competition,…..and yes they could actually win it. There players maybe horrible ugly gits, but they play consistently with passion, home or away. I’m finally admitting to myself, that… Read more »

Billy Bob

Shank how can you not want us to get champions league football? It would provide us with more money to buy more suitable players!!! Moreover, even if we didn’t do that well in the competition we’d drop down to Europa but with a stronger squad, be in with a good shout of winning it, then more champions league money etc.

Hantal

This sounds like one of wengers post defeat comments that would guarantee a draw in the next game

Anonymarse

A draw would be a step forward. Might actually get us in the CL.

Anonymarse

We are 1 point behind Chelsea with a superior goal difference. Chelsea have three difficult games. We are 2 points ahead of United with a far superior goal difference.

If United win and we draw we will be back in 4th.

Of course we don’t look capable of getting anything in an away game at the moment.

Hantal

I agree a draw wouldn’t be awful but a win away would he huge for us right now

UpNorth

Rebuild confidence, bounce back, show big mentality… Only buzztalk, tell the overpaid suckers that their only goals on Sunday are to win all duels and play the ball forward.

Hantal

Less sideways and backwards passes would be a start.
Oh and scrap the bloody short corners

George

I’ll add some one-touch play too. I refuse to believe that they haven’t seen how effective it is when analysing game footage.

yea mon

blah blah blah same ol same ol

George

Personally I hope a little bit of internal anger and embarrassment come to the fore.
