Arsenal Women have completed the signing of Dutch midfielder Jill Roord from Frauenbundesliga side Bayern Munich. The 22-year old is an international teammate of Vivianne Miedema and Danielle van de Donk and formed part of the Netherlands’ 2017 European Championship winning squad.
Prior to joining Bayern, Jill won 2 Eredivisie titles with FC Twente before moving to Germany in 2017. She was teammates with Viki Schnaderbeck for a season too. Jill joins Viki, Lisa Evans and Vivianne Miedema in leaving Bayern for Arsenal, as the Gunners prepare for their return to the Champions League. She might not be the last Bayern player to make the hop to London this summer….
“I’m really proud that I’m going to be an Arsenal player,” Roord told Arsenal.com. “Arsenal is one of the clubs in England that I really like. In women’s football, they’ve always been one of the top clubs. Of course there are some Dutch friends of mine who play there, so I’ve always followed them. I’m really looking forward to it.”
Roord also admits that Dutch teammates Sari van Veenendaal, Dominique Bloodworth, Danielle van de Donk and Vivianne Miedema had all told her good things about life at Arsenal, “I’ve talked to them and I know they’ve all been really happy over here.
“They also told me that I’m going to like it here and that it’s a good step. It will fit the way I play and the way Arsenal want to play too. I’ve talked to them and it’s my decision because I felt really good about it, but it helps that they’ve said these good words.
“It’s always nice if you go somewhere and there are some familiar faces on and off the pitch. That really helps and I’m really happy that I’m going to play with them over there.”

It’s all good news. Top quality European players want to play for the Arsenal and we are happy to have them here! Shame Dominique decided to move on but I can understand how the Dutch culture is more similar to the German than ours and it is Wolfsburg that have stolen her from us. That just shows what a tremendous job she did for Arsenal to be noticed by such a revered team as Wolfsburg. Dom moving makes sense to me as she is a utility player with us and if we manage to keep injury free (or not as ridiculous) next season she goes back to second choice dm after Lia and we’ve got decent cb cover in Janni.
Thought so. Great news. Bayern have several players out of contract and she’s among their best. Given the shape of the current Arsenal squad, I might expect further arrivals from Munich at full back, or as cover for Miedema up front. Any idea how much she would get paid? Just curious about wage discrepancy in men vs woman soccer?
The discrepancy is huge because there is very little money in the women’s game at the moment. That is why it is relatively easy to sign world class players for the women’s team and not for the men’s team.
Personally over the last few seasons I think the women’s game has been better to watch anyway not just because we have a top team but also every player regardless of where they are in the league puts in 100% effort for each match.
Big reverse discrepancy there too!

We need more squad depth for CL football next season. I’m hoping we can scoop some more English talent too just so i don’t have to cheer on a Lionesses team of all City and Chelsea players!
They may be City and Chelsea now but most of them have played for Arsenal at some point even the ones that play in USA!
