Confirmed: Swanson joins MVV Maastricht

Arsenal have confirmed that Zak Swanson has joined Dutch second tier side MVV Maastricht on loan for the 2020/21 season.

The 19-year-old full-back, a regular in Premier League 2 last season, heads to Holland to gain first team experience.

We developed a bit of a relationship with Maastricht when Andries Jonker headed up our Academy with Kelechi Nwakali and Stefan O’Connor both heading their on loan three years ago.

During the Dutchman’s spell, Tafari Moore, Gedion Zelalem, Aaron Eyoma and Dan Crowley also tasted life across the Channel, playing for Utrecht, VVV-Venlo, Volendam and Go Ahead Eagles respectively.

Best of luck to Zak, here’s hoping the move aids his development. We’ll resist the swansong puns for now.

In case you missed it, Zech Medley, another young defender, has also left the club on loan for the year. He’s joined Gillingham.

Thought this kid was Jenko’s brother from his looks. All the best in your loan move, Zak.

Arsenal academy doing great under Per.. I expect more unknown under 21 players to go on loan this season, most of them are highly rated and it’s a smart move because the first team has to concentrate on bringing in a few experienced players to balance to balance the squad. Most of these youngstars won’t develop here but if they go and impress the manager they could be in the first team in the next 2 – 4 years. They are still very young.

In Per we trust.

Have we had any luck from Holland yet?

It’s not Holland, it’s the Netherlands…

Just FYI: Holland and the Netherlands are not the same thing. Zak is now in the Netherlands, and we’re super chuffed to have him.
