Arsenal monitoring Partey, could return to training this week

Thomas Partey could return to full group training in the coming days if medical assessments show he’s making enough progress in his recovery from a thigh problem that has sidelined him for over a month.

The Ghana international hasn’t kicked a ball for club or country since being substituted at half time of the 1-0 defeat to Leicester in late October. The problem wasn’t thought to be that serious when it was initially diagnosed but with each passing week, fears of a serious problem have increased. Indeed, just this week speculation mounted that he could miss much of the Christmas period.

Thankfully, it sounds like those rumours are untrue, however, the club is being cautious about throwing the summer signing in the deep end again for fear of causing further damage.

Ahead of Thursday’s clash with Rapid Vienna, Arteta touched on whether Partey could be available for Sunday’s North London derby.

“He’s been training separately in the last week or so and we have to scan him again to see how he’s feeling,” the boss told his pre-game press conference.

“He’s a player that is so willing, that is pushing us every day and he wants to do it. At the same time, we have to protect him and make sure that when he gets back in the team, he is ready to do that and to whatever extent of minutes we can use him, so it’s going to be crucial with the moment he starts to train with the team to see how he is feeling and how he is evolving day-to-day.

“We don’t know [if he’ll be available for the North London derby], he is really pushing every day and he’s trying to get around the doctor and the physios but he hasn’t trained with the team yet so let’s see this week if he can get a session or two and then assess him, we need to scan him again so we can see the extent of the injury and how it’s healed.

“I know if it’s up to Thomas then he wants to play tomorrow. We have to see medically that he is safe to participate at all.”

This is such good news!! Really hope he’s available on Sunday.

Thierry Bergkamp (non negotiable)

This all sounds so Arsenal. Brings me back to the days of the dreaded “3 weeks” injuries, that would turn out to be 6/7/8 months

C.B.

We need him, though it’s a long season…

– Rumour? This article and direct quote suggests otherwise. Maybe a deliberate Fergi / Pep style strategy to confuse Mourinho?

Oh god please. We really need him to be ready for the NLD, think a return to the Old Trafford team+performance is best we can hope for at the moment

Nathan

I believe he injured himself against Aston villa first half (Nov 8)? It has not yet been a month since he has been out..

Francesc

Attack being the main concern, Partey being/not being there is not that significant

Serpent

The midfield is a complete shambles with the speed of a dead turtle covered in glue without him, but apart from that, we’ll be alright.

Daveo

Yeah, I mean what role could a competent midfielder play in helping our attack?

SharpasFc

It was Aston Villa when he got injured and was subbed!!!!

Bergytime

Does whiff a little bit of mind games. I sincerely hope so and that we see him fit and healthy on Sunday! He’s a massive influence in breaking down attacks and in transition. Also, he’s actually massive, which always helps.

I believe you have already posted this comment.

Can you really ‘evolve’ day-to-day? Definitely Arteta’s most overused word. We may be in need of some divine intervention!

Serpent

I’m not against some divine intervention. Perhaps a Monty Pythonesque finger of God bodyslamming Jose on Sunday?

Zenithreptile

Jose fingered by God would be an amusing side show to what is undoubtedly going to be an otherwise difficult watch.

Hail Gus!

Arsene’s was definitely ‘overall’ 😂

Petit's Handbag

Not sure if this has been mentioned but Nathan

Do you think it’s possible we’re playing our ‘own sort of mind games’ with spuds for Sunday? I assume they’d setup differently if they thought he wasn’t playing etc?

Could be completely wrong but I suppose it’s possible. We so need him 🙌

MrT

Arteta needs him for this Sunday… To keep him in his job ( Only a Win )
