Williamson, Wubben-Moy, Parris and Mead in provisional England Euros squad- Nobbs ruled out with injury

Arsenal’s Leah Williamson, Lotte Wubben-Moy, Beth Mead and Nikita Parris have been named in Sarina Wiegman’s provisional 28-woman squad for this summer’s European Championships.

However, England have confirmed that Gunners midfielder Jordan Nobbs will miss the tournament due to a knee injury she sustained in the penultimate game of the season against Aston Villa.

Nobbs missed the 2019 World Cup with a knee injury and was a surprise omission from last summer’s Olympic squad. She also picked up an injury during the 2015 World Cup which restricted her to one appearance during that tournament.

Williamson will captain England for this summer’s tournament on home soil. The provisional squad of 28 will be whittled down to 23 in mid-June. The tournament kicks off on July 6th with England v Austria at a sold out Old Trafford.

Well done, Lotte.

Not sure how Nikita Parris got in. She’s looked shocking every time I’ve seen her involved with the team.

Is Leah Williamson listed as a midfielder?

Martin B

Yes, Leah’s listed in midfield. I suspect if Chloe Kelly’s fit then Keets (who I thought she looked pretty sharp the last couple of times she came on, although it wasn’t against the level of opposition to be faced in July) is likely to miss out.

Dan

So gutted for Jordan.

I’m really surprised that Steph is in the line up, not shade to her, but given how much she’s been out this season, it seems really hopeful and not that hope is not given to Jordan. Before i read the full press release i was hopeful maybe it was just a temporary omission.

Really, I’m just so so gutted for her.

Martin B

The squad announcement says that some players (presumably Houghton, Scott and Kirby) are being given a chance to prove they’re fit enough to be considered for inclusion.

Zoe Waterfield

Me too. Much prefer her to Steph

Fun Gunner

Well done to Leah, Lotte, Nikita and Beth.

Jordan, my heart bleeds for you. Such terrible luck for such a talented player.

No real surprises. Very pleased for Lotte who’s been excellent recently. Steph Houghton and Jill Scott look rather sentimental choices based on history; even when not injured I can’t help but feel their best days are behind them. Are there really no new names ready to make a breakthrough?

Martin B

Jill Scott did a pretty good job against Spain in the Arnold Clark Cup. Not sure if any of the other midfield options (eg Stanway, Kirby etc) could have performed that role. I suspect Steph’s a bit of an outside chance, judging by Sarina’s comments, but experienced CB cover is a bit light – not sure she’d want to drop Leah back (as she did against N Ireland) unless there was no other choice.

Zoe Waterfield

Totally agree

What’s with the huge gap between end of season and the euros? They will all have gone months without any match practice

Cool Captain Leah and the “X” Factor Attacker Beth, are both sure to shine 🙂
