Lewis confirms Arsenal contract extension but open to loan

George Lewis has confirmed that Arsenal have taken up the option to extend his contract for another year.

The 22-year-old winger joined the Gunners on a free transfer in 2020 having been spotted playing in Norway’s lower leagues but has been hampered with injuries since his arrival.

To date, he’s only played 13 times for the club’s under-23s but he’s hoping to get back on track now that he’s fully fit.

“I broke my ankle and was out for eight to nine months. I got a few minutes here and there for the under-23s at the end of this season, but I didn’t play as many minutes as I wanted.

“The club chose to activate the option [to extend the contract] and I’m really happy they did. If not I wouldn’t be here.”

Lewis has been included in Mehmet Ali’s squad for a training camp taking place in Scotland at the moment and says his major ambition for the year ahead is to play matches, whether at Arsenal or on loan.

“I feel fit and ready. The injuries are way behind me and now I only focus on what lies ahead. I’ve had a really good rehabilitation period at Arsenal and really good people around me.

“I just want to play matches. If it’s in Arsenal or on loan at another club, I honestly don’t know. There has been some interest around, so a really important decision for my career is coming up, where I’m going to play the next 6 or 12 months.

He continued: “I take day by day and step by step. For me it’s all about getting 10-15-20 matches under my belt, scoring goals and assisting and make the best of the opportunities I’m given this next year, wherever that will be. I can only control what I can control, and that is myself and my development.”

For a while there I thought we’d ventured into F1

Can someone explain to me the wisdom of giving a 22 year old who can barely get in the U23’s a new contract? Is he any good or is it simply to fill the U23 squad?

Freddie

I am fairly certain it is just to fill the squad. But you never now though, he might be a late bloomer.

Tapps

He wasn’t in the U-23 because he was injured/recovering from injury.

The third option is to give MØ someone to talk to? Less homesick …
