Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema nominated for Ballon D’Or

Arsenal’s Beth Mead and Vivianne Miedema have been nominated for the 2021-22 Ballon D’Or award. The Arsenal forwards both made the 20 strong shortlist with the winner to be announced on October 17th.

Mead won Arsenal’s Player of the Season award with both the supporters club and Arsenal.com and then went on to win the Player of the Tournament and the Golden Boot as England won Euro 2022.

Miedema enjoyed another solid season which saw her move from the number 9 position to number 10, however, a covid infection impacted her performance at Euro 2022 where she missed two games and was not really fit for the third.

The other players nominated were: Sam Kerr, Christiane Endler, Kadidiatou Diani, Lucy Bronze, Selma Bacha, Fridolina Rolfo, Alexia Putellas, Lena Oberdorf, Trinity Rodman, Wendie Renard, Asisat Oshoala, Alex Morgan, Marie-Antoinette Katoto, Ada Hegerberg, Millie Bright, Aitana Bonmati, Catarina Macario, Alexandra Popp.

Arsenal’s Euro 2022 winners and Rafaelle, who won the Copa America with Brazil this summer, will return to full training with Arsenal on Monday.

Both fantastic players. I reckon Beth has the better chance of the two given her recent Player of the Tournament prize, as well as England winning.

Chris

Damn right too

Surely it’s between Beth and Hegerberg given both their achievements in 2022 and the way that the Ballon d’Orr judges consider player’s merits!

What if they give it to Alex Morgan? I feel like that’s a real possibility unfortunately. She’s joint top goal scorer in the nwsl and the USA won the concacaf championship where she got the golden boot. She could obviously fade away but I feel like it’s certainly a strange possibility.

Julia Grosso won the CONCACAF Golden Boot. Alex Morgan won the Golden Ball, which apparently is the award for the tournament’s best player.

Apologies, by the way. Pedantry levels can be quite high on a Saturday before the first caffeine.

Natty

No you’re good. The internet was doing a bad job of telling me what she’d won. Honestly player of the tournament is probably better for her anyway.

My the best person win ☺️

Well deserved. Beth. COYG

Could end up being a debate about Champions League vs Euros importance

These awards are always based on reputation rather than performance.
Look at the nominees again; Didn’t Lucy Bronze miss half the season and what has Alex Morgan really done this year to be the best player in the world?
Beth really does deserve this based on her performances for club and country and her turnaround after the Olympics slap in the face but I wouldn’t be surprised if the winner’s envelope contains the name Putellas even though she didn’t play in the biggest tournament of the season but she has a much higher profile!
