James Sweet is perfect Zak Swanson replacement for Arsenal U21s

Zak Swanson left Arsenal permanently for Portsmouth earlier this summer, with the defender having had a reputation for being one of the club’s most reliable performers at U21 level.

Swanson’s departure has allowed James Sweet, a player who is somewhat similar to him in style, to step up to the U21s as the regular right-back in the opening weeks of the season.

Like Swanson, Sweet has a history of playing in different positions having previously been mainly used as a midfielder or a winger. Now the Welsh youth international seems settled at right-back and has acquitted himself well for the U21s in the early stages of the campaign despite not being one of the stars of the team.

Swanson was rather similar in that he would go about his work with an excellent attitude. Sweet, who signed his first professional contract with the club ahead of this season, will hope that this can be a fruitful campaign for him, although he is likely to lose his place when Reuell Walters returns from injury.

However, Sweet can still have a significant part to play for the U21s this season and his versatility could prove to be rather useful later in the campaign.

Sweet is an excellent crosser and has coped well with the step up to U21s football so far, but there is still a long way to go in his development.
