Arsenal close in on Valladolid’s Fresneda

According to various reports, Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Real Vallodolid right-back Ivan Fresneda.

The Spain under-19 international made his senior debut at the Estadio Josée Zorrilla last season and has seen regular action in La Liga in the first half of the current campaign under the stewardship of head coach Pacheta.

It’s understood a number of big clubs, including Real Madrid, have been tracking the youngster’s progress but that he’s plumped for a move to the Emirates Stadium after a conversation with Mikel Arteta.

While a contract could be signed in the coming days, it remains to be seen whether Fresneda joins up with the Gunners immediately or if he’s loaned back to Vallodolid to see out the season.

Arsenal have a fair amount of strength in depth at right-back with Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu vying for the starting berth and Cedric and academy prospect Brooke Norton-Cuffy, currently on loan at Coventry, waiting in the wings.

Cedric is expected to leave the club in some capacity before 31 January with Fulham favourites to sign the Portugal international.

Arsenal are expected to announce the arrival of Leandro Trossard in the coming hours and news has also broken of a deal to sign Poland international Jakub Kiwior from Italian side Spezia.

edu please I’ve barely started watching all my kiwior compilation videos yet, there’s only so much edm I can take

Brady’s bunch

I wonder is he a right sided zinky type player 🤔🤔

yes

I don’t know I’ve been busy watching all the highlights of poland’s world cup games, kiwior didn’t touch the ball in any of them. £20m lol edu wtf

Well, I don’t know one way or the other frankly. Some Gooners are saying that his signing is a “nice piece of business”. I strongly suspect that’s based just on the fact that Arsenal have signed him (so it must be etc.) rather than any actual knowledge of the player. It doesn’t mean he won’t be a success of course, but I really can’t see how some people can be so positive (rather than hopeful) at this stage. Surely, “let’s wait and see” is the most sensible course with him.

We needed a backup for Gabriel. Have been looking for a left footed centre half for a while. We only have Gabriel at the moment. He’s 22 I think, can only get better. I don’t see how that weakens us at all?

Jagun

It’s a trusting the process typa thing. Whoever Arteta walks in through those doors is a premier League winner and a member of arsenal’s Imminent most golden era yet. Yeah, I said it and the numbers numbers say it too. We’ve strengthen and we’re winning the league, hopefully the Europa as well! I’m happy as a little boy floating on a unicorn.

Greg

You allright, Mate? Watching highlights of Poland games at the WC is a worrying sign of masochism even for me. And I’m Polish!
Watch the Spezia ones instead. Anyways, Kiwior looks promising, he’s technically gifted, he has a great ball control and unusual vision for a CB. He has an eye for a long ball.
That said, he was disappointing in Quatar, but then the whole team, bar my man Wojtek Szczęsny, was.

Brady’s bunch

apologies I meant Fresneda

Daveo

Oooo…good take! I hope so. Zinny is so unique. I’m convinced he’s one of, if not the most vital piece to our current setup. We play at different levels when Zinny is in vs when he isn’t. That is basically near impossible to replicate.

Man Manny

Wow! It is raining signings at Emirates at the moment. Fabrizio Romano says a midfielder is still being expected! I am swooning right now!

chepetin

Glass of water for Mr. Manny…

Jacob

Hopefully someone like Camavinga

Daveo

Scrub. Get Bellingham.

Oddo

Super

Serpent

Call me spoiled, but I’d prefer a Partey replacement… 😬

Sakapunch

Love how fast we’re moving now. Exciting times!

Bongogooner

Mudryk was just a smokescreen
*Trust the process*

ChennaiGooner

Lol, love looking at it that way!

Cranky Colin

Pinch me!
Is this all real?

( I am loving it)

Anon

It’s transfer friday

Ron

We need a midfielder pls. I always have a heart attack whenever Xhaka or Partey goes to the ground …… knowing Elneny and Sambi are not good enough

Arsemouth

Guys, we were wondering what’s plan B? I think we are seeing it.

MeSoHornsey

I’m starting to wonder if it was Plan A.

Prakhar

Big upside, low risk. Amazing!

Seangabe

Still waiting on that Partey cover

Eazy Deezy

Where’s the poo? Is this news no poos?!

Emi Rates

I give it a five on the meter. Not too hard, not too soft, just perfect.

chepetin

I don’t know about that scale Emi. As a guy who has to clean up after four dogs, I say that the harder it is, the more perfect it is…

Emi Rates

My perspective was from the “giving” end, not the “receiving” one. You’re right of course.

chepetin

Ah, yes. A quite important distinction.

Daveo

We don’t honour excalibogs for no reason!

Domi

Maybe boehly gave 10m a season and a 14 yr contract to brooke norton c and he’ll be leaving. Otherwise this doesn’t make sense. And both white and tomi are still young so not much space on RB really.

Brady’s bunch

I’m guessing not interested in him for for Rb they might have other plans for him unless Ben white is going back to centre back on the off chance that big Willy doesn’t sign up.

ChennaiGooner

Maybe we’ll sell Mr. Brookes for 2mil come summer and we’ll be linked to him every transfer window from Jan 2026 when he has actually become the new Cafu @ AC Milan! 😉

Ebo

Huh, we’re signing players at a Fresnetic pace right now.

Looks like it might be one for the future rather than helping us win the title this season but that’s almost as important. Easy to discount in the moment but transfers like that are the reason we have guys like Saliba helping us to the top of the league right now.

ChickPEA

That’s true but have two very good players, both under 26, at this position, plus an academy prospect who looks great. It’s a bit different from the Saliba situation I’d say.
Anyway, I trust Artedu. Let’s see what will come.

Ebo

I wouldn’t be surprised if Arteta would rather use Ben White as a centre half, and not sure if Tomiyasu is in his long term plans or quite at the level we need, so anyway we’ll probably need a good backup at some point soon. And I’d rather have another option than relying on an academy prospect to prove himself as a reliable defender at such a young age, better to give the kid more time to develop on loans with no pressure on our side.

Boy Bastin

Some Gooners look to me to be in danger of getting a little carried away with the signings/potential signings being mentioned. Despite the fact that hardly anyone commenting on this site has heard of the likes of Kiwior, let alone Fresneda before (and even Trossard wasn’t mentioned that much), they’re automatically going to be “good/great/super” signings, before they’ve even put the Arsenal shirt on, let alone kick a ball in anger for the club. Surely that’s OTT. We know Edu certainly has a positive track record with some great signings over the past couple of years or so but they’ve… Read more »

chepetin

But it’s human nature to get excited about a new thing. I’m excited because the club is top of the table and actively trying to improve like it isn’t. And I’m even more excited because I think the club is executing on a plan for what the next steps of our evolution are and we don’t see it yet and in the future all of the current moves are going to make sense. I’ll have a “why didn’t I think of that/see that” kind of moment. And about past performance not being a guarantee of future success, I will add… Read more »

Sven

Sure. We really haven’t watched these players closely. Kiwior is 6’2′, technically gifted, a good passer, plays for the Polish national team and plays in Serie A. He turns 23 in a month. Fresneda is technically gifted, came up in the Real Madrid farms system plays in La Liga and on the Spanish U19 team. He turns 19 in August How bad can these two signings be as depth and for Cup/Europa league games. Troussard is the odd one as he doesn’t fit our generational “futures” profile. But we have a chance for a title now! Our window was supposed… Read more »

John

I’m excited based on how Edu/Arteta signings have worked out so far. Except Willian (and even he is doing well at Fulham right now which makes you wonder how much his poor form at Arsenal was due to football having to be behind closed doors).

Mike the bike kingsnorth

Willian was shit end of.

Jay

Also hadn’t heard of Tomi, Ramsdale or Ben Blanco or even Tierney before they signed…….
And look how they turned out

wrrong

Don’t quite get this signing. We have lots of depth there, a good youngen coming through. Needs elsewhere…..

Alan Sunderland

we have 1 left footed cb mate.

Badaab

Austin trusty is left footed, but he’s also on loan at Birmingham

John

Got to say with Kiwior and Fresneda (probably) coming in it looks like it could be curtains for Holding and Cedric.

Sven

Oh no…

I believe Cedric is Fulham bound

And Holding hasn’t progressed quite as well as we’ve hoped.

Saintree

Holding holding Son’s short lost us a top four spot last season. I am appreciative of his effort over the years at the Emirates, but I gotta say good riddance.

Ealing

Holding may see his contract out, but I doubt he will see much more action.

Badaab

hearing that cedric is crossing into the fulham car park now

chepetin

Hopefully he won’t have a Peter Odemwingie moment

Charlz

So we’re replacing Mudryk with 4 players possibly for same amount

Harib

Somewhere Todd is hiding behind a pole waiting for edu and Co to see what plane they catch
