Confirmed: Arsenal sign Leandro Trossard from Brighton

Arsenal have confirmed the signing of Leandro Trossard from Brighton in a deal reported to be worth £21 million plus add-ons.

The 28-year-old Belgium international has been recruited on a three-and-a-half-year deal and will provide competition across the front line as the Gunners gear up for a title push and runs in the FA Cup and Europa League.

Until a week ago, Mikel Arteta had hoped to sign Ukrainian winger Mykhailo Mudryk, however, after that deal was hijacked at the death by Chelsea, the club have been decisive in lining up an ‘oven-ready’ alternative.

Trossard moves to Emirates Stadium off the back of a fantastic first half of the season with Brighton. In 17 appearances, he’s made three assists and scored seven goals, including a noteworthy hat-trick away at Liverpool. He also featured three times for his country at the World Cup.

Expectations were high at the Amex Stadium that Trossard would commit his long-term future to the Seagulls but he changed his mind on his return to Qatar, got himself embroiled in a tete-a-tete with manager Roberto De Zerbi and both parties decided it would be better if they went their separate ways.

Trossard only had 18 months left to run on his current deal so the Seagulls can be pleased with the fee they’ve achieved.

Arsenal managed to get all the necessary paperwork done before midday meaning the new signing will be available for Sunday’s match against Manchester United on Sunday. He will wear the number 19 for the rest of the season.

Chelsea about to make formal complaint that Arsenal acted they could put their bid in for Trossard and Kiwior.

And FA is going to charge us also to get help in order to secure our chance for being up top by the end of the season…. LOL

When I heard this the other day I thought, hmm… not amazing but not bad. After thinking a little more I think it’s possibly a very good signing. Money is good AND more importantly, he’s not being signed to replace Saka, Nketiah or Martinelli, he’s being signed to replace Nelson (2 be sold) and Marquinhos (2 be loaned) while providing significant competition to the others. The end of Janu has now put Trossard and Smith Rowe on the bench. That’s a serious improvement in squad depth. Just like Kiwior replaces Rob holding / Elneny and Fresneda replaces Soares. That’s a… Read more »

Take that back! Reiss Nelson lives Forever

Offasgooner

All we are saying, is give Reid’s a chance!

Emi Rates

Get in!

Now for this guy adding the depth we need to maintain our top position in the PL while Chelski continue to struggle with all their over the top expensive signings. That would be just fucking hilarious!

Brady’s bunch

Good business, reckon he’ll have more goals/involvements than MUdryk this season

Jamie Ryan

Yes, we learned our lesson with Pepe, I hope. There is a lot of value at the middle-to-lower end of the market, if you can get the right player at the right time.

Gooner7190

Speaking of Pepe, I think it says a lot that Trossard has been given his squad number. Hopefully that means the cogs are whirling towards permanently moving Pepe on

Kris

Does help when he’s already got an 8 goal headstart… In all seriousness, no reason why he shouldn’t overperform Mudryk this year. Playing in a much better team coming in with tons of prem experience, might even find he gets more opportunities too.

Goals and involvements for Arsenal

Welcome to The Arsenal Robbie Leandro. We’ve been expecting you.

You’re no angel but let’s hope you entertain us, even if it’s not for eternity.

Could it be magic? We can only pray.

You don’t know who Robbie Williams is….? Wow.

Beef

To be honest, I don’t see it. I think people only saw it because they thought he was going to join Spurs, and Robbie Williams is a bit of a cunt so it seemed like a funny thing to say.

Whatever mate. 🙄

Yes he looks a tad like Robbie Williams.

Wonder what song he will sing in his intro to the dressing room?

chepetin

Welcome Leandro.
Glad you are finally here.
What a saga this one was.
This dragged on for what, days?
I trust that our coaching staff can get a tune out of him.
If he can replicate what he did in the first half of the league season, when Odegaard was the only Arsenal player who outscored him, I think we will be looking good.

Prakhar

He has that Santi, Hazard body type and gameplay. We may even have an upgrade here.

Jakeus

Even sporting Sanit’s number 19. Those 2 are similar in several ways as you mention, stature, style and the ever underrated, two-footed….ness?

PeteyB

I’ve not watched much of him to be honest. When I saw the shirt number I thought of Santi (sorry Pepe!). If Trossard can be a quarter the player Santi was he will be a good signing!

Man I loved Santi so much.

Snc

Keep them coming!!!!!!

Aggressive and direct player, he is gg to cause havoc to the opponent. 2 more bodies to go! Though i hope they look at Jonathon David of Lille.

Yellow Ribbon

That video made was brilliant. Welcome to the home of the champions boy!

Arsenally

In the post Fergie era, no team has won the league without having a Belgian.
Here we go!

Badaab

don’t think we can call this the ‘post fergie era’ until he stops going to matches and scowling.

chepetin

Nice spot.
But, we already had Sambi

Arsenally

True true!!

Jakeus

To be fair we already had one on the books, but heck yeah!

Man Manny

This guy is not a squad player by any means. I don’t see the Partey – Elneny gap between him and any of our front four – Nketiah, Saka, Martinelli and Smith-Rowe. He will give a good account of himself, and will push any of the aforementioned to their limits!
This is an ideal signing for a title chasing team. He reminds me of Diogo Jota for Liverpool the season they won the league.

EmileSmithWhoa

Reading about his character and youth along with his ability, I imagine Arteta will polish this gem. Possibly a really valuable adedition.

Man Manny

And with Jacub Kiwior’s imminent arrival, the polish process becomes smoother.

Badaab

given the length of the deal, is this the end for reiss nelson at arsenal? or does this allow us to send balogun to a PL side on loan next season? will marquinhos go on loan for the second half of the season?

Indiegooner

If we are not going to use Balogun next season, I hope he goes to Brighton on loan. They do need a striker and Balogun has proved that he can provide goals. Moreover, they are a good team that takes points off of bigger teams. Arming them with a quality striker that can’t play against us could be cheeky.

Alan Sunderland

the young striker Brighton have, Ferguson? looks good.

Ozzie

We could borrow Welbz from them in return.

Jamie Ryan

Very glad for this signing. For whom is this bad news, however? I reckon Nelson’s chance of more minutes is gone now.

Qwaliteee

It’s a squad game now.

Alan Sunderland

exactly mate, 5 subs and 3 games a week coming up the more options the better. Just read a rumour that we’re trying to get camavinga on loan. a midfieder and a cf would not only show the rest of the league we mean business but our players as well.

215Arse

I’d rather have Trossard than Mudryk. We need players who can come in and make a difference immediately. Trossard is PL ready, has excellent feet (has a little Santi in him!), good vision and interplay, and can score goals. Put him in a better side such as the Arsenal and he’ll fit right in. COYG!!!

Gooner7190

An attacker who’s scored a hat-trick at Anfield also isn’t to be sniffed at. Saw someone say he was amazing playing alongside Welbz so how much will his game go to the next level alongside Ødegaard, Saka, Martinelli & Jesus?

Boy Bastin

The first actual signing. Positives and some slight negatives. The positives are that he’s an experienced PL player so won’t need time to settle in to a new league (obviously he’ll need to settle in to the team though). He should be up and running almost immediately and that will help ease the strain on the current players at a key time in the season. On the slightly negative side. Well, at £27 million (including add-ons) we’ve not got him at the bargain end of the transfer spectrum, have we. I read Sp*rs bid £12 million a while ago. OK,… Read more »

Red Arrow

Not every player has to fit the age profile. After such a long time we are actually in a position to fight for the PL title and this is a small price to pay in order to have a quality back up to the forward positions.

George Peace

When I first heard these rumours, I was underwhelmed, but after some basic investigation, I’m now stoked for this signing. Can play across all front three positions, almost 2-footed, third highest numbers in the ENTIRE LEAGUE for balls won in the final third (such a Jesus trait and Arteta style), experienced in England and Premier League and top value at £25m. Only worry could be his attitude, but surely Arteta has done his homework on that front and I trust his judgement. I think this is a fucking great signing.

Gooner7190

Looking around, a few people reckon his attitude was down to telling Brighton he wanted to leave when he got back from Qatar & them activating a years extension a few days later, against his wishes. You’d think that if he does have an attitude though, that he’ll know Mikel ain’t one to be fucked with after the way he got rid of Auba

Daniel

One of our assistant coaches was his manager at Genk so I’m sure they got the details from him about attitude

Alan Sunderland

I believe Albert stuivenberg was his manager at genk for a time. I can’t see him being a problem, stuivenberg would be able to tell arteta what he’s like

Ozzie

‘Almost 2-footed’?? Like Nigel Winterburn??

Jedders

Leandro, I’m so sorry for all the time I called you Leandro Tosser-d.
It was funny at the time, but now you are a gooner!
COYG

Merlin’s Panini

Good player. I’m happy with this. He’s the sort of player who could drop into midfield as he gets older. Being two footed, with good vision, he could potentially play in that more advanced role Xhaka is occupying. I like the versatility in this team.

btw

What day is Sunday’s match against United on?

Qwaliteee

Erm…..Sunday?

VAgooner

I’m starting to think Arteta intentionally punks all the big spenders in the league before getting the guys he actually wants every window. Baited United into overpaying for Martinez before paying much less for Zinchenko just days later, now has baited Chelsea into using all their funds on one guy and gets a better one (plus a few extra and still has a few quid left over).

Playing chess while the rest of them play checkers.
