Confirmed: Azeez joins Wigan Athletic on loan

Wigan have confirmed that Miguel Azeez has signed on loan for the second half of the season.

The 20-year-old midfielder, on the books at Arsenal since he was five, heads to the DW Stadium to gain further experience of senior football.

One of the standout talents of his year group, Azeez made his senior debut for the Gunners in the 4-2 away win over Dundalk in the 2020/21 Europa League campaign.

He also made the bench for five Premier League matches last season having spent the first six months of the campaign on loan at Portsmouth.

This season, Azeez has been playing his football in the Spanish second tier with UD Ibiza. They announced last week that Arsenal have recalled the player and now we know why.

While we wouldn’t be smiling if we had to swap Ibiza for Wigan in January, Azeez sounds content enough in his first interview with Wigan’s official website.

“I’m really happy to be here. It’s a real honour, and I thank both Wigan and Arsenal for getting this deal over the line. I’m looking forward to playing and helping the team,” he said.

“It’s a big step up, and I’m ready to give my all for the team and the fans, and prove myself.”

Wigan are currently rooted to the bottom of the Championship and have won only one of their last 10 matches.

He’ll be working with ex-Gunner Kolo Toure who was appointed manager in November and his old academy coach Kevin Betsy, who joined the Latics after an unsuccessful spell as head coach at Crawley Town.

If you prefer Northern Soul to Agadoo, it’s probably a good move.

Johnny 4 Hats

Seems harsh to say it as 18 months ago he was lauded as one of the brightest prospects in our academy (I remember when Partey got injured some fans suggesting we recall him and play him).

But this feels like the last chance saloon.

Another one for the future.

Given his name, he really should have signed for Halifax FC

Yolo Toure

Tough task for him and Kolo, I’m sure he’ll learn a lot from it.
