Arsenal 3-3 Southampton – player ratings

It was a third successive draw for Arsenal as we came from 3-1 down with 5 minutes of normal time to go to draw 3-3.

It was madness, I can’t even begin to describe it at this moment in time, so just ratings.

Here’s how the players rated this evening.

Read the Arsenal 3-3 Southampton report and see the goals here

The ratings are hidden by default until you vote, but if you just want to view the ratings and the comments, flick the switch at the top above Aaron Ramsdale. Also, please give the ratings a few seconds to load.

Anders Limpar

Inexperienced manager, inexperienced players. Proud of them all. We will learn and grow!

Runcorn Gooner

Ramsdale has to carry a lot of the blame. He started the chaos and it was totally unnecessary. Other players were not at their best but you just cannot start a game like that if you want to be champions.

Anders Limpar

He made one error. As an example Jesus had 6 shots and scored 0 goals. To put a lot of the blame on Ramsdale, for a whole teams performance, is short sighted.

Sonuvagun

It’s a frustrating pass from Ramsdale because it was never on, and was a terrible risk reward decision – the risk was really really high, the reward was negligible when he had other options. Overall he’s saved us buckets of points this season and in fact he made a great reaction save in this game.

Samgunz

End of the day Ramsdale indeed started the jitters but he has arguably won us many points this season already, you just can’t really blame him, he’s a huge part of the reason we even have a chance of winning the league. Odegaard was miles off apart from his pre assist for the first, his goal and his last 20mins. Otherwise he was very frustrating, could’ve gone off as much as Vieira at HT. Felt Zinchenko was more of a cpt out there, Partey not looking like much of a leader either. Saka and White were stand outs for me.

Gaylord Focker

I love Rams to bits…but that sublime assist was to say the least, cocky….

Gaylord Focker

I just had the chance to watch the replay of the first goal again and I have to conclude that it was not Rams fault after all. The first time I saw the goal during the live telecast, I tot he was trying to pass the ball to Partey, which I tot was a bit cocky considering Alcaraz was just lurking behind Partey. But when I saw it again on second viewing, I realized that he was actually trying to slip the ball to Zinc. This play pattern I’ve seen we’ve executed successfully many times before to start our attacking… Read more »

Morrisey fan #1

I thought Jesus was extremely underwhelming tonight. What a shame. If those chances fell to Trossard we may be happy Gooners right now. Also if my auntie had bollocks she’d be my uncle.

Left Testicle

If you’re his #1 fan I would expect you to know how to spell Morrissey!

Swerve

I think Jesus avoids a lot criticism but that will come next year if he keeps
missing big chances. We need a goal scorer of the highest at quality to compete in both the PL and CL next year and I fear his limitations may well start to
show.

AntBad28

I hope he can regain his early season form, he was deadly when he first arrived.
He did still score in the last two games though.

Wrighty's hats

Agree with this – he’s coming back from an injury and it takes most players more than a few games to get back into the swing of things. He’ll get there. It’s unfortunate that him taking a minute to find his form is coinciding with this amount of pressure, at the tail end of a season where we’re legitimately challenging for the title.

mrugunner

Why do you think city let him leave that easily?

Awesomesauce25

The answer to that is not because they didn’t want Jesus. But because they wanted Haaland.

Determination Cultured

Yes. he jesus is an excellent wing competitor and 2nd choice striker, like he was at city. Question is do we get another CF or try balogun? Sell eddie

SG_Gooner

Defensive mistakes are often amplified and offensive ones are treated like a stat…

Runcorn Gooner

I was making the point that he started the chaos and it was unnecessary. Ramsdale has been brilliant this season overall.

GoonerJust

Despite the result, still love the this team. Yes, we should’ve scored 3 more at least but just unfortunate , Gaby J should be more clinical in front of goal. And yes, we’ve been conceding easy goals without Salinba.

Mr positive

I need saliba back

Emi Rates

My nerves need him back too. Happy to share him if need be.

El Mintero

Fkn unacceptable starting viera! Wtf…the dude does nothing. I’m assuming Granit was injured or something but come on…Viera starts ahead of Trossard and ESR?? Fck me that was so frustrating. We likely lost the league tonight and you can point to that one mistake…viera is another fkn Willian…fkn ray charles can see that…

PayRarlour

We all do

Roy

Saliba needs his back too, and it’s taking a while…

Mesut Ö’Neill

Saliba needs a new back

Mark

Pathetic to draw at home to another team at the bottom. Have to beat City and win out from there.

BLAST

Sometimes you have to bet the champions to become the champions. Can’t say it wasn’t fun. Although can see why City let Jesus go.

Martin

Could’ve had a Hattrick.

Jack

Where is Arteta’s rating?

ShiftyZA

Would be pretty interesting adding the manager in there? We could rate his cla for te game?🤷🏼‍♂️

ShiftyZA

Calls*

pound4pound

Would have loved him in place of Partey tbh

Flash

Middle of the pitch… as usual.

Heavenly Chapecoense

In the mind of players.

Kiwamya

If only… He would have scored the pen against West Ham and he would have contributed a hell of a lot more than Viera today

Billymac

Yeah, but he decided to play Viera.

Goonerrific

Can’t agree with the implication – the players f***ed it in the first half

Brazilian Gooner

Partey is a 1 at best today, that shoot in the end is the cherry on the top of one of the worst DM display I have ever seen

Bleeding Gums Murphy

Don’t exaggerate

Brazilian Gooner

Ok maybe I overreacted, but damn that shot made me mad af

Emi Rates

My wife reacted with a resounding “oh for fucks sake” when Partey hoofed it to the sky.

aprilfool

Lol I think there were several thousand Gooners across the globe who said those exact words at the same exact moment.

Goonshow

Mine were a LOT more salty than that…

PayRarlour

She’s a keeper…

Emi Rates

In her footballing days making up the numbers for her older brothers in the park she was more of an attacking midfielder actually.

Anders Limpar

He won more tackles than any other player and made the 2nd highest successful passes. Partey played how Partey normally plays, averagely. He just didn’t have the rest of the team (and this season most importantly Xhaka) playing at the level they have been.

Ebo

He also gave the ball away that led to their corner that made it 3-1. And it wasn’t the only ball he gave away. He’s been error-prone recently, he’s also had a lot of good moments but we can’t win with him making errors like that consistently, especiallly without Saliba to cover for these mistakes.

Goonshow

Bollocks:

  • he made FOUR shockingly sloppy passes that gifted the ball to Saints;
  • he was tamely dispossessed in our half, leading to their goal
  • he – selfishly – went a a 3pt drop-goal conversion (thinking he was on the rugby field!) when we had minutes left to score and he had better options on both sides of him.

He was one of a few KEY players who – again! – were sloppy and sub-par(tey) today.

John Leaf

You really need to understand the players we were missing and the ground he was covering as a result. Have that in mind and watch the game again. Guarantee you will change your opinion. He was immense, sadly not enough.

pound4pound

Yes, he had a lot of ground to cover, and that undoubtedly makes his job harder.

It’s also true that he made a complete mess of it.

Anders Limpar

Agreed, as far as I could see he was playing in a one man midfield, as calling Vieira’s performance peripheral is generous. Willian-esque is probably closer to the mark.

Riku

Trossards or Smith Rowe got to play before Vieria

Swerve

That doesn’t explain his passing today or at West Ham. You can see it in his body language when he isn’t at his best.

Heavenly Chapecoense

You are a Brazilian and you don’t even know about Denilson.

Kiwamya

Denilson was the king of padding his passing stats with easy sideways balls, but at least he was always available. He never hid like Viera

Exit the Lemming

Vieira was poor today yes but he didn’t hide. Always made himself available for a pass

tommo

Partey has never been able to shoot on target when he sets himself up. His good efforts have been when someone fizzes a cutback for him. Dunno why he keeps doing it. So so frustrating.

Henkamp

I have been hearing talks about us wanting to sign a tall striker. On the evidence of today’s game, WE NEED THAT! All those delicious crosses from Saka can be a potent weapon against a packed defense. I know that many people are already disappointed, and I can understand why. But tonight, I feel less angry than I was on Sunday. Maybe I have resigned myself to what’s coming and just appreciate the boys for what a season they have given us. I can feel it that we will go again this summer and have a rocking season next year.… Read more »

Goonerrific

Imagine if Giroud still played for us…

Emi Rates

No way Giroud would have missed the header that Jesus fluffed close to the end.

Goonshow

Nope – there’s a reason he’s now France’s all-time top-scorer. And that’s off a relatively limited matches-played. And against some pretty stellar competition!

Exit the Lemming

I really liked him as a player but Giroud missed plenty ‘nailed on’ chances for Arsenal (just like Aubameyang and Lacazette)

A Different George

Just like everyone. Salah and Haaland and Mbappe. Everyone misses big chances.

portugunner

🤮

Hass

I’m of the same feeling. Whatever happens this season and honestly I’d be happily surprised if we win the league from here, I reckon with a couple of additions we’ll be right up there again next season.

Alex

No, the lesson City want you to learn is that it’s futile. Going for the top spot is too much work for too little reward if you’re the players. 95+ points needed, flog yourself to death all season and lose by a Gundogan goal on the final day.

Keeping a team motivated to do that again is not even possible for league and CL winner Klopp

Henkamp

And it pains me to see practically everyone sucking up to City. They are a financially doped side with many dark dealings (that we probably don’t even know about yet). They are cheats. And it’s unfair.

Der32

It’s awesome to see PGMOL sucking up the oil money too. Any blue cunt goes down and it’s a penalty for City. Arsenal player goes down, shouts handball etc etc and VAR will just turn a blind eye. Odegaard was pulled down by Elyounoussi earlier, I reckon KDB would’ve got a pen for that.

A Different George

Oh ffs. You can’t really believe this.

Swerve

They couldn’t have done anything to stop us if we had turned up for 90 minutes in the last 3 games.

Exit the Lemming

So they are cheats and have ban unfair advantage without any substantive evidence? Doesn’t that prejudge the Premier League court case?

Goonshow

We coulda had HFB back for ONE million quid… that’ll be the HFB who has just displaced the great TH14 as France top scorer and is banging ’em in for fun in Italy.

Goonshow

To the happy red-thumbers… so, for almost no money, you wouldn’t have had GIroud on the bench for the last 20 mins vs Saints?
Even simply as an impact option up front – all that experience? Arguably the best attacking header of a ball we’ve ever had on the end of all those tasty crosses? A diamond bloke knows and loves the club (remember that Emery kicked him out)?

Muppets.

Peter Cechs helmet

Well, it’s fair to say that was dreadful.

Emi Rates

Pissing awful!

John

well, that wasn’t very fun to watch

Indra

0/10 fans who left the stadium early, 5/10 to those that came back to sit again

GraeB

I stayed, can I have a 10?

pound4pound

I’ll give you a 9, but you really should have scored a goal.

R W

This. Many red members such as myself work their arses off just to try and see 1 or 2 games a season. Then we see the ones with proper access leaving as soon as the going gets tough? It doesn’t sit well with me at all, it’s your team don’t walk out on them and be grateful that you’re there in the first place

assistantref

You can usually get away with 1-2 players having bad days at the office. You can’t get away with Ramsdale, Zinchenko, Partey, Vieira and Jesus all having shockers.

SLC Gooner

This. Arteta needs to shake things up for a couple of those.

GraeB

Vieira should not have lasted to HT.

Ukesox

Vieira should not have started.

StuArse

ESR should have.

mrugunner

He doesn’t know how to

Billymac

Why on earth would he put Viera in tonight. The guy is such a light weight.

Ebo

He clearly sees something in him in training that doesn’t end up getting expressed on the pitch. He’s shown odd flashes of tremendous talent but you also need to take your opportunities and show some consistency to become a reliable option and he hasn’t really done that unfortunately. I wouldn’t rule out him coming back better and stronger next season, we’ve seen that happen, but for these next few weeks I think it’s time to give someone else a chance.

FT9

WILD Gabriel rating

John Leaf

Let’s talk about good performances and not focus all on negative. My god!!!! What a player Gabriel is. He was playing LCM, LB and LW for the last 20 mins on his f’king own and in complete control. Because he has been here for a while I think he is under appreciated. Beat CM in the league!

FT9

Beat CM in the league!’

What the fuck are you on about?

GlennHelderuntilsheslept

He obviously meant CB toy sausage and he ratioed you pretty nicely

El Mintero

He was at fault for the 2nd goal dude! He’s not been his usual self since Saliba got injured.

Exit the Lemming

He was at fault for a brilliant inch perfect defence splitting pass from Alcaraz? Grow up son

El Mintero

Lol yeah ok dad

Arsenalfanthem

Got to put together 6 wins, no room for any more error. I don’t think we can do it, I don’t want to say we bottled it, but it was in our hands and we should have won two of three of our last three games.

StuArse

Familiar theme…..bottling the end to the season again.

Rich

In the past we bottle all 3 and lose all 3. That has us on 3 less points in the league and the title out of our hands even if we win at City on Wednesday. All teams (minus financially doped soulless corpo-clubs) will go through rough patches. Improvement is still improvement.

portugunner

all 3…

CaptainKhan

Vieira is shit. He brought nothing today and I can’t think of a game where he had any impact. That Martinelli assist in the Villa game doesn’t really count, anyone could’ve made that pass.

I feel that with this team, everyone has to be ticking. When one is not, then we don’t function well.

aprilfool

I don’t think he’s shit but agree he was shit today. He needs to hit the gym this summer; felt like I was watching an academy kid making his debut. Would’ve subbed him at half time for ESR (remember him?), then Trossard for whoever at around 60, but then again what the fuck do I l know. Man, if that Trossard shot had gone in . . .

Exit the Lemming

A better attempt at goal might have gone in

Der32

Vieira actually scored in his 1st epl start for Arsenal earlier this season, playing for an injured Odegaard. Easy to forget when you have an agenda against a young player playing his 1st season in the epl.

Swerve

The word agenda is overused as you have here. Why would this chap have anything personal against him? Or everyone else with a pair of eyes tonight. No one wants Arsenal players to fail. Ridiculous.

PayRarlour

Actually, no one here wants Arsenal players to fail, but there are plenty of those cunts on youtube, calling themselves supporters.

Exit the Lemming

Name them and shame them you brave soul

El Mintero

You’re missing the point…he may well have great potential but he’s shown nothing this season when he plays. So WHY THE FCK start him tonight over Trossard or ESR?!?!

Billymac

If the choice is between ESR and Viera, the only answer is ESR.

PayRarlour

I feel for him, it musy be hard on his mental health in a way to see this amazing season going on and not even be able to get on the pitch to feel a part of it; when some of your childhood friends are a part of it too.
I hope he at least gets 10/15 minutes at the end of a few games.

Goonshow

Player in his first PL season – clearly has talent but just needs to get up to speed physically, is all. Some players need that time – you cannot just write him off (as many were doing with Odegaard after 8 loan matches!).
This lies at Mik’s door – why on God’s earth does he not start Trossard instead? Or even ESR??? If ESR isn’t fully fit, no probs… he has both Trosser and Viera to come on at any time!

JacobD

No ESR again. Eddie wheeled out as a sub again.

What is Fabio Vieira. Aside from his corker against B’mouth he hasn’t contributed.

Partey’s head seems scrambled.

Blessed to have Martinelli and Saka. They’re just brilliant.

Goonshow

It’s almost as though, having paid decent money for Fabio, and talked him up through the season, Mik feels that he has to make it work…

LEFT08

So proud of our boys. They are immense all season. Fighters, warriors. They’ve made us proud all season. It’s not JUST about winning the league.

They looked dejected at the end tonight and they don’t deserve that.

Blex

This. What a ride it is!!

PayRarlour

Here here!
They’re playing keep up with a club with infinite oil money, who have been essentially cheating to enable them to build the team they have.
We’re playing the kid with the cheatcode and (for now) we’re still ahead.

Exit the Lemming

I think you’re pinning your hopes on Man City being stripped of this season’s title after their Premier League court case for alleged financial wrongdoing is settled in 2052. Good luck with that.

Flash

Unfortunately, but not surprisingly… Tiredness and lack of squad depth hurts us most, when it matters most.

LEFT08

Edu and Mikel will fix that in the summer. It’s not easy to win this league. But our Arsenal is well and truly back and we’ll give it a real go. Believe.

Flash

I do. Amen!

T. House

How are they tired? They’re professional athletes who haven’t played a match in almost a week.

Ashburton Patriot

Lol. Bro. You’re funny.
This is the winning comment of the day

Flash

I recommend to check the stats (whoscored.com for example). I do think we can declear, that our key players are under serious phisycal strain.

Martinelli and Saka are among the 4 outfield players in the top 5 leagues who played the most minutes and under 23.

…and: there are only 1 outfield player (Ward-Prowse) in Europe all together, who played more minutes than Gabriel Magalhaes.

Not to mention that Odegaard is also very, very high on these lists.

Exit the Lemming

So our nearest rivals who still have the added squad strain of FA Cup and Champions League are somehow ‘fresh as daisies’ yet we, with only one trophy left to play for are completely exhausted? It’s a squad game so get a better squad.

Goonshow

Can we PLEASE park the ‘tiredness’ argument? It is, in itself, tired! We threw away leads against two clubs who had had tough midweek games when we’d had a full week’s rest!
And we’d had a chilled 5 days before Saints… Lack of depth, certainly. Tired… bollocks.

Pesgooner

We never do it the easy way guys. I can’t lie it was all going a bit too well. Let’s go beat those cheating swines on Wednesday! Keep believing gooners!

UzesGooner

Fair player ratings…

It wasn’t all Holding’s fault tonight….Partey had a mare and so did Ramsdale.

It’s a cliché but we are the youngest side, and missing Big Willy has been deflating for the whole group….

The thing is,we’re still in it after three shit results….you never know, so rather than getting too stressed I’m keeping quietly hopeful for an Anfield type miracle in mid week…

Hopefully they’re fucking knackered after the Blades take them to hammy & groin extra time 🙏🙏🙏

Martin

L’equipe style ratings. Ramsdale 2 White 6 Holding 3 Gabriel 6 Zinchenko 4 Partey 1 Vieira 1 Odegaard 6 Saka 6 Jesus 5 Martinelli 6. Subs Trossard 5
Partey has really fell off a cliff lately and no surprise that our defending has suffered in that time.

PayRarlour

Mais Martinelli merit plus que 6!

Edzo

We all knew when Saliba went down we were in trouble, especially with Tomiyasu out. Not to blame today on Holding but for the life of me I don’t know why Arteta doesn’t play zinchenko and Tierney at fullback and let white partner with Gabriel. Zinchenko can still play forward and Tierney can slot in as the 3rd player in the back. Last sessions slump corresponded to Holding in the team. He’s not up for this. Partey seems to be slipping. He’s not able to play this many games, I guess. Need replacements for Partey and xhaka. They are old.… Read more »

Riku

Yeah I can see the logic in playing KT at right back or lb and zinny at RB. Whoever can pass easy into saka

Exit the Lemming

Rob Holding has become a lightning rod for undeserved criticism. He wasn’t remotely culpable for any of the three goals we conceded and helped prevent Southampton winning this game.

pound4pound

Partey was terrible today. Normally I’m ok with his limitations on offense because of the defensive solidity he provides. But his fumbling of the ball eventually led to two goals. He committed unnecessary fouls. And he had the Partey-trademarked moon shot late in the game when a pass to Odegaard was right there.

We need an upgrade in the middle of the pitch. And I’d be fine with Jorginho the rest of this season.

Jace

Let’s talk about partey a bit. Last game, we were 2 goals up. He received a pass with teammates open for a pass but he instead attempts to SPIN the ball around DECLAN fvcking RICE. That was the start of a come back for Westham. Today, at the left back position… he has a chance to give the ball to I think zinchenko or Gabriel to clear, but he instead tries to spin again. The soton player won the ball which resulted in a corner from which they scored the 3rd goal. I’m not putting the results on him, but… Read more »

Artie

Why did we take out martinelli. Wasn’t taking out partey at 3 1 e most logic thing to do. We needed a goal since sotonwere parking e bus partey wasn’t needed

Goonshow

You’re charitably leaving out his utterly selfish moonshot with minutes left on the clock – when he had better strikers on BOTH sides of him.

Rnab08

That was infuriating. Could see it coming for ages too.

Exit the Lemming

I like Partey but when he’s not on form he’s really sloppy

BigArse

Well that clarifies the issue. We must win at the Etihad. COYG!

GraeB

This is Arsenal, spirit of ’79 called for (but please don’t do it all and lose to Wolves)

John Leaf

FUCKING COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not done yet and in our hands. Make the f’king noise and believe. Come on THE ARSENAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Matt P

No chance with our defence right now.

Jace

Why remove martinelli instead of Jesus? How many chances does he need to score?Sincerely we should start Trossard at the Etihad. It’s a must win game now and every chance have to count, we can’t rely on Jesus’.

Ebo

Jesus scored 4 goals in the last 3 games before this one

A Different George

Maybe I’m being foolish, but I thought it might have something to do with the fact that Martinelli had made so many runs of 50 yards and more that maybe–just maybe–he had gotten tired. He was absolutely brilliant; I don’t think Arteta disagreed.

riddeezy

Bednarek losing his shit for being substituted after basically playing dead is something I feel like Blogs would have given a bonus rating if we had won. Still all to play for.

SLC Gooner

Not sure about the playing dead part. He came down pretty hard on his neck and back of head. And looked like he was out for a bit.
I’m happy to see the Drs sticking to their guns and not letting him back on after that kind of impact.
That said, it was funny to see him almost assault the Soton medic for not letting him go back on.

PayRarlour

He looked like a lurching drunkard

Exit the Lemming

Sign him, he sounds perfect

Anderslimparisverygood

I feel that we had plenty of time to get back into that game and just weren’t good enough. Getting the first goal back at 20 mins should have seen us creating chance after chance but we didn’t, and then in the second half Neville is saying a goal was coming but how many saves did their keeper have to make? Just very disappointing overall, and please don’t get me started on Vieira, spends all the time on the pitch hiding and is so light weight thar we are basically playing with 10 men.

Goonshow

We had ONE shot on target in the first half-hour of that second half… inexcusable.

Pat Rice and Beans

-10/10 – handing title to City

aced

Questions on the starting lineup; why not Trossard in the Xhaka slot instead of lightweight Vieira? And thought this was the type of game where Jorginho was better suited; became clearer in 2nd half when Saints went all in on parking the bus. Blogs, you said it Partey (who’s been off the boil) had some poor decisions. Jorginho’s specialty is picking out the splitting pass. Should have rested Partey for Etihad where you need a Thomas Partey game.

Pat Rice and Beans

Zinchenko needs to get his shit together ffs.

Goonshow

Yep – been saying it for a while and getting red-thumbed into oblivion here. Great going forward (not so much today) but ALWAYS dodgy on defence.
Interesting that Blogs (nor anyone else) picked up on his being asleep standing up at the far stick for their 3rd goal? Although why on earth he and Benny had swopped positions, I’ll never know – it’s DIRECTLY responsible for the gimme 3rd goal.

Exit the Lemming

Plus the impromptu and hastily assembled huddle he engineered after the 2nd goal was just a combination of virtue signalling/playing to the gallery

Goonshow

Would LOVE to know what Martin said immediately after that, when he had a quiet one-on-one… Don’t think it was entirely positive!

zeke60

Holding and Trossard deserve better ratings. Holding was solid and Trossard made a good impact after coming on.

Swerve

Holding was terrible for the third goal. He also unbalanced the team and bring a level of panic that other players have to cover and puts them off their game. He is a liability and that has been proven last season and now this one.

Mentalista

Happy St. Totteringham’s all 🙂

Excited Gooner

Think you’ve been very generous to Partey. His worst game in an Arsenal shirt by a mile.

PayRarlour

The problem is, he keeps having his worst game in an Arsenal shirt all too regularly.

PatJ

Happy St. Totteringsham day every one.
