After a brilliant 2-0 win over Newcastle at St James’ Park, goal scorer Martin Odegaard and man-of-the-match Jorginho faced the Sky Sports cameras
On Arsenal answering a lot of questions today…
MO: We showed something special today. To come here and win is not easy, the way we did it as well, we had to be very smart, we had to be a bit ugly at times. This is a big step for us, a young team coming here and doing all the things we did, it shows we’ve come a long way.
On how his legs are coping…
J: They will be better tomorrow and the day after, I think. The most important thing is we go home with three points which is what we wanted. We know this league, we know sometimes we can’t win every game playing beautiful football, the way we want. I’m really pleased to see our team can play this type of game. We have to understand it’s not possible or easy to go through with passes, sometimes we need to fight and I’m very proud of the team for the way we fought until the end.
On what it was like playing in that atmosphere…
J: This atmosphere is so beautiful, it just motivates us to play, gives us so much fire inside. I’ve played a few [like this] before. It’s the atmosphere every one of us dream about as a kid and now it’s time to enjoy it. It’s just beautiful.
On how big a win it was after last year’s defeat…
MO: That’s a big factor as well. Last year here was one of the toughest days in my career to be honest. After dropping a few points and after th City game, to come back and beat Chelsea and then come here and win again, it shows the mentality and how far we’ve come. We have to keep going, we have to keep digging and fighting until the end. That’s what we’re going to do and we’ll see.
On there still being twists and turns ahead in the title race…
MO: It’s football, anything can happen. We have to be ready to do our part and then we’ll see.
Glorious
Big game from jorgs. I’ve been critical of his signing, but this was top class from him. Well in.
If there is any justice in the world, city drop 5 points and we win out. Come on football gods… Do your part.
He and Xhaka were both outstanding today. Wouldn’t mind seeing more of them together. And again I love Xhakas new ability to toe the line with his shithousing. He takes it just far enough to annoy the other team without boiling over.
Don’t forget Kiwior. Never gave Wilson a kick. I actually forgot Wilson was playing till my dad mentioned how quiet he’d been kept
So calm it was great from Kiwior you are right. He had a few huge interventions and looked at home in a highly tense away game
Yes totally agree..any other season he goes over the point of no return and gets himself send off
Really interesting Jorginho today. I wonder is he arteta’s dream number 6. He needs pace behind him at all times which we have in 3 cbs now. I’m very curious to see how the midfield transfer window goes now. I always thought we would be looking for a carbon copy of Partey but maybe it will be more of a deep lying playmaker with a caicedo in front winning the duals, who knows but it’s interesting. I’m all for the 4 CBS in games next season, white Saliba Gabriel Tomi/kiwier.
Brilliant performance against top opposition in an intimidating atmosphere, the difference between last season and now is clear for all to see and we’re still growing. In the words of Mikel, keep digging, good things will come
Arsenal have beaten 17 of 19 teams they have faced in Prem this season. City & Southampton are only exception.
Boggles the mind that team as good as this dropped 4 points against relegation certs southampton.
Fucking Southampton. Feels like they’ve been out boggy team for close to a decade.
Won’t be playing them next season
We’ll probably get them in a cup.
Jorginho was excellent.
To think some fans didn’t want him because he came from Chelsea, instead of actually judging him on his footballing ability.
To be fair there is a track record there to be scared of. But he’s bucked the trend and shown once again that Edu and Co know what they’re doing.
Kante next, and last.
Proud of the team. Way too much “captain hindsight” on post Mach comments. We lost two big players (and I suspect Partey is 1/2) in quick succession. Putting Holding in and sticking with TP wasn’t unreasonable. It didn’t work, we adjusted, and off we go again. No way of knowing if the alternative would have worked anyway. We’re on route to a big points tally!
I am surprised that there are so few mentions of Partey’s fitness. I think it’s clear he is carrying an injury. He cannot run as fast as he could, and that affects everything.
Been poor and in/out team since last internationals when we had to send a physio with him the whole time.
So proud of this team…Real guts to bounce back from a humbling defeat to City. These are the types of games that elevate our level.
I was honestly fearing the worst once they beat us and it became clear our title chances are minimal. I was sure the players would find it hard to motivate themselves and we’d go into a freefall and might even lose 2nd place. Thank god this team just isn’t the typical Arsenal we’ve gotten used to over the past 18 years and keeps proving me wrong, sure they still have room to learn and improve but the will and the character is 100% there.
Odegaard should have scored that second one too!
