Arsenal Women at the World Cup: McCabe makes history but Ireland bow out

Katie McCabe scored Ireland’s first ever Women’s World Cup goal direct from a corner for Ireland in Perth but Ireland went down 2-1 to Canada and bow out of the World Cup.

McCabe captained the girls in green while Arsenal’s Sabrina D’Angelo and Cloe Lacasse started on the bench for Canada. The latter came on as a second half substitute but it was McCabe- voted player of the match- who stole the headlines as she notched her country’s first ever Women’s World Cup goal straight from a corner.

Alas, Ireland couldn’t hold the lead and a Megan Connolly own goal and a second half strike from Manchester United’s Adriana Leon means Ireland are out with a game to play. They will face Nigeria on Monday.

Earlier on, 2011 winners Japan secured their qualification for the round of 16 with a 2-0 win over Costa Rica while Spain also eased their passage into the knockouts with a 5-0 win over Zambia. Tomorrow Victoria Pelova’s Netherlands take on USA at 2am UK time while Steph Catley and Caitlin Foord’s Australia play Nigeria at 11am UK.

As a Canadian Arsenal fan, I was slightly torn watching this game as she was clearly the best player in the match!

As an Irish born Canadian I didn’t know what to do! Sinclair should have had a hat trick, so many missed chances.

You have to say over 90 mins that Canada deserved it.

I was in the same boat, but wanted Ireland as this is their first time. Love Katie McCabe’s Olimpico! Well, I can root for Canada again now, and Sinclair’s imminent record breaking goal!

She certainly was

We’ve got Katie McCabe!
The regularity with which she does things like that show that it’s not a fluke!
A highly under-rated player in world terms if only she had been eligible for a major nation she would be even more of a heroine.
It takes a performance and a half to be player of the match and still be sent home as part of the losing team.

Watching the replay & I noticed that as the ball floats into the six yard box, Katie is already off starting to celebrate cause she knows it’s going in. Now we know why she missed those penalties against Leicester & Chelsea last season, cause she’s only allowed to score bangers!

Poor Katie and so disappointing for Ireland. Credit to Bev Priestman, her subs changed the game. If only Ireland had that luxury…
Katie was absolutely immense. That goal! One of several national captains at Arsenal and man did it show.
Lacasse gets round players so easily, it’s like she’s on roller blades.

Members of the current Arsenal squad have captained Ireland, Switzerland, Australia, England, Scotland and Great Britain. Have I missed anybody? (Don’t think Manu has worn the armband for Austria but you can add Katy Reid for England U17).

P.D.

Canada’s subs played a part no doubt…..but the own goal changed that game utterly. Without the goal, subs or no subs, Canada were in serious trouble.

Katie is a legend. She has been simply magnificent in both Ireland’s games.

Fun Gunner

Yes, very unlucky. But I thought Canada went up a gear in the second half.

Little Cubby

I wish Katie was English !

Awesome goal! Hope Katie win Goal of the Tournament. 🇮🇪
