Arsenal Women at the World Cup: Arsenal’s Swedes take bronze in victory over Matildas

Arsenal’s Swedish trio Stina Blackstenius, Amanda Ilestedt and Lina Hurtig take the bronze medal in the Women’s World Cup as they overcame Australia 2-0 in Brisbane in the third place playoff.

Stina Blackstenius and Amanda Ilestedt started for Sweden, while Lina Hurtig came on as a 67th minute substitute, while Caitlin Foord and Steph Catley started for Australia.

The Swedes were deserved winners, Fridolina Rolfo converted a first half penalty after Stina Blackstenius was tripped in the area. Blackstenius then provided a second half assist for Kosovare Asllani to seal the victory and the bronze medal. Caitlin Foord and Steph Catley take fourth place in the tournament. Amanda Ilestedt finishes the tournament on four goals, Stina Blackstenius on one. Caitlin Foord scored one and Steph Catley two.

Tomorrow sees Alessia Russo, Lotte Wubben-Moy and England take on Spain in the final in Sydney kicking off at 11am UK time. Spain have centre-half Laia Codina who is set to sign for Arsenal after the tournament.

Well done to our Swedish gunners, too good for the Aussies, come home soon 🙂

Onenil

No obvious injuries during the tournament for our players which is a result in itself.

Clarence Campbell

Well done gunners women, bring that passion back into the primer league

Excellent from Sweden, commiserations to Australia. I don’t want Caitlin Foord anywhere near a football pitch for the next four weeks because that woman needs a rest.
I’m happy for Stina about her goal involvements. She had a good game.
Very excited about tomorrow, I really hope LWM gets on the pitch to play some minutes, whatever happens. Good luck to Russo and Cordina.

I hope Stina will also get a beak. Feels like she had a lot of game time this season with little rest.

*break

Daniel

I’m guessing we probably won’t see any of the semi finalist’s in the champions league qualifer anyway that’s probably not enough of a break

Fun Gunner

Yep. About a third of our squad are going to be unavailable for Linköping (if that’s how you spell it!). Blackstenius, Hurtig, Ilestedt, Russo, Cordina, Wubben-Moy, Catley, Foord. Four defenders. Plus Wienroither and Williamson are injured. Basically our backline at the moment is just Jen Beattie and Nöelle Maritz! JE will be earning his salary sorting us out for that match.
