Arteta: Newcastle goal is a disgrace

Mikel Arteta was left incensed by Newcastle’s winning goal as Arsenal’s unbeaten start to the Premier League season came to an end at St James’ Park.

VAR checked for three separate offences in the build-up to Anthony Gordon’s goal on 64 minutes but decided there was no conclusive evidence that the ball had gone out of play or that there was a foul by Joelinton or an offside.

Arteta saw the situation differently and took his frustration out on the officials.

“It’s embarrassing what happened – how this goal stands, in the Premier League – this league we say is the best in the world,” he told BBC Sport.

“I’ve been 20 years in this country and now I feel ashamed. It’s a disgrace and there’s too much at stake here. We are trying to do incredible things and be at the highest level each week. When we’re not good enough I hold my hands up and take responsibility.”

He added: “The outcome is nowhere near the level this league needs to have and the way this league is getting competed in. It’s not good enough. I feel embarrassed to be part of this.”

Arsenal were dominant for large swathes of the game and did well in the first half to quell a fervent atmosphere. By and large, Arteta was pleased with the performance of his players although privately, he’s sure to have concerns about the lack of clear-cut chances created in the final 30 minutes.

“I have praised my players for the way they played and competed in this stadium against this team. The result should not be what it is – there are many reasons for that.

“If there was a team looking to win the game today it was Arsenal.

This game reminds me of famous Sinatra song, New York. The city, that never sleeps in Arteta’s mind. I do not want to see this sterile superiority again.

CLEGooner

Wha?

Var will solve the problem

Even a circa 2008 Barcelona would struggle when players are allowed in o get away with elbowing players with impunity.
May be the goal was inconclusive but in conjunction with the elbow incident only leads towards something sinister.
Thus PGMOL needs to go. I would say all the Arsenal fans cancel their sports subscription for a month as a protest. Money is the only thing that will hurt these cunts. Then sky and NBC will take notice and put pressure on FA to do something.

Norwegian Wood

I don’t know if you lot are just naive or you have an agenda.

Do you think Newcastle are pushovers? They put 4 past PSG here.

When you couple their ability with the fact that they were elbowing and smashing everything, and take that dubious goal into account this is the turd of an opinion that you to give?

Absolute disgrace.

truj

I don’t care about Newcastle.

Starteta

Exactly, „we should beat them 3 nill because we are the Arsenal“, is a pretty arrogant attitude. This games with Newcastle are about small margins.

Eric Blair

The most apt Sinatra song I can think of for this post is Something Stupid

Chris

Damn right, good on you Mikel

Var will solve the problem

They chalk off goals for fucking millimeter and three huge incident in one VAR play and they let the goal stand. This will never happen again in this season ever. I would put my money on it. Same thing with Martinelli two yellows in one incident. Fucking bullshit.
If Super league have relegation, then I am almost tempted to say join that league because I’ve fucking had it with this referring shit. Ever since Wenger era. How many titles we have lost because of cunts like Mike Dean and the rest were able to get away with so many decisions.

AusGunner

This recurring “muh Martinelli’s two yellows” meme is nuts. They were two correct decisions and the fact they happened without an interruption in play between them (and that the outcome is extremely rare) is completely irrelevant. It was genuinely excellent refereeing.

Mpls

If that were consistently practiced throughout the league, you might have half a point. But it’s never called like that anywhere else, week in, week out, so you don’t.

George Peace

How the fuck can you claim one specific event was “excellent refereeing” when the rest of the events are not held to the same level of accountability? Wff dude.

A Different George

This is how I read Oliver’s decision in that incident. Martinelli clearly attempted to impede the throw in, which is a classic yellow-card offense. Oliver did not want to stop the play to show the yellow, because the attacking team had an advantage; so far, nothing wrong with what he did. Then Martinelli intentionally grabbed a player as a tactical foul, and was obviously prepared to take a card for that. So now Oliver has a problem: if he books Martinelli only for the secend offense, he has let him get away with a bookable offense, impeding the throw in.… Read more »

Wengerball

All of MAs decisions are backfiring and he’s feeling the pressure. He’s losing the plot.

Wengerball

This is why people hate us, we are here berating VAR instead of looking at ourselves. VAR has always been shit and will keep being shit, maybe we shouldn’t let VAR decide half of our matches?

Beef

Don’t complain about poor officiating. Got it.

Daveo

It’s not poor mate, it’s corrupt.

RedHotHornBlower

Horlicks. You were a Wenger Out aeroplane flyer weren’t you?

Kentish Gooner

Fuck off.

Wengerball

Truth hurts

truj

You need a proper winger mate

Wengerball

Bring it

Sheldon

Arteta needs to leak a Rassie Erasmus style video critiquing the ref decisions.

Mikolaj

He is right. So there it comes a huge fine and a few games in the stands

Ebo

He’s right about the goal but at the same time we had 102 minutes to score a goal and didn’t, so to say our performance was that worthy of praise and it’s just that one VAR decision that did us in is a bit disingenuous. We deserved 1 point better than we got today, no more, and while the players did play super hard, you can be proud of their effort but hard to say that was masterful football or there’s hardly room for improvement.

Kentish Gooner

That one point could be the point that wins us the prem, helps us to qualify for the CL, etc, etc. it’s all relative.

Mpls

Er, let’s not forget nobody has scored At Newcastle yet this season.

We would have with the man advantage we should have had every.fucking.day.of.the.week.

Santa’s Thigh Grab

Both things can be true: we lacked real attacking threat in the final third and should be playing better and PGMOL either hasn’t got a spine to call a game correctly, the are inept or corrupt.

CLEGooner

Cheatin fookin Bastids

Keep it Real

Mikel is spot on

Hanning

Let’s be honest here, we are toothless up front. Blame who you like, but the fact is we must have enough of a threat going forward. The usual suspects did their usual thing. But I watched MOTD top ten forward lines this morning. We had representation in the form of Henry, Bergkamp and Pires. Sure we spoilt. But right now what I wouldn’t give for a Bendtner. Or an Adebayor. I’d even take a Gervinho….

Ebo

You lost me at “Bendtner”. Then double lost me at Adebayor. But when you said Gervinho I was inside the event horizon of a black hole, lost not only to humanity but to the basic laws of physics. Are you mad? We need a striker sure but the whole point is we need a really good one

Chip Douglass

Eddie is great at scoring against Championship defenders tbf

Unfettered tr...

I agree circa Adebayo (at least the defenders would’ve felt his presence), but deeply disagree with an even more inconsistent Bendtner.
Gervinho??
You gone far too far my guy.

Tommmy

Just watched the full press conference interview. I like his passion and to back the team in public but it sounded a little bitter.
PGMOL are useless though so hard to disagree. But we could have played for another week and not scored today

Martigoal

I think the majority of us would be happy to take a point from the game. That’d be fair. But we didn’t get that point. Hence the reaction. Forget the Jorginho incident, but the potential hattrick of errors in the goal situation? F*ck me can an AI take the reins instead? Could hardly do any worse. And would probably actually call the on field ref to make the final decision.

Daveo

AI is probably too hard to corrupt…

Tommmy

Arseblog EVERYONE of my comments for the last year goes to awaiting approval. Really ruining my fun of posting please sort it out!!!!!

Glenn Helder's Perm

Me too, takes the fun out of using the site tbh. Don’t think I’ve ever posted anything contentious.

And Mikel was right.

Bill Hall

I think PGMOL is corrupt to the core, even Webb. Too many terrible decisions last 2/3 seasons and no way should any pl ref be also referring games in middle east with so many middle east club owners now. It stinks!
Backhanders galore!

Der32

City last week got a soft pen for a slight tug. Arsenal this week conceded a goal where our last defender was pushed to the ground with both hands, and he would’ve 100% got to the ball first if not for the push. Let’s call it as it is, PGMOL is corrupt. And it’s no surprise that two teams owned by rich nation states is benefitting.

Arsene's Zip

It’s a mystery why the decisions always go the way of the nation-state backed clubs

Chinese Gooner

Better get used to it. Middle east is/will become the sugar daddy of all your governments and big corps. Football is just the beginning. Their influence will seep through every corner of your daily life. Blame your governments for dragging everyone into this financial quagmire.

Qwaliteee

That being the case, the sooner this planet ceases to exist the better.

portugunner

not the planet, only humanity…

Chinese Gooner

That would be great:) I’m getting more fun watching animal documentary than football games these days.

Jht

I don’t know about the goal but Arsenal needs to start shooting more and find more threat infront of goal collectively. Attacking display was misrable.

Third Gooner

You are mistaking Newcastle for Sheffield United?

Nick

Am I going nuts? The ball hits Joelinton’s arms as it drops between them – nevermind being out of play, a foul
on Gabriel and potentially offside, it’s conclusively handball! VAR missed this and no one on the TV coverage has mentioned it! You guys saw the handball?!

Der32

I thought so too. But the var refs were too busy trying to find a way to allow the goal. 2-handed push on the last defender? Borderline, not enough force, no foul. Ball out for a goal kick? Borderline, inconclusive, no out. Handball? No way, Joelinton’s arm was in a natural goalscoring position.

Martigoal

Thanks for the exhalation through nostrils

Qwaliteee

Even Lineker on MotD was keen to sweep it all under the carpet and move on to the next game ASAP.

Collibosher

In the BBC live reporting, Chris Waddle, he of Barcode and Spud fame, commented that the game needed a goal, but he couldn’t believe that one was given. He didn’t think it was a goal.

Our “49, 49 undefeated” ended with dodgy ref decisions, too!

Mark

The way Newcastle played like thugs is a disgrace, their player certainly should have been red carded for the hit to Jorginho’s head.

Theo

We were up against petrodollar fc, rogue decisions were always going to happen.
However that doesn’t excuse our inability to create despite the dominance. The goal was conveniently awarded yes, but what did we do with our possession?

AusGunner

You can’t say that ball was out. VAR can’t overturn that on-field non-decision because frankly it looks like the circumference of the ball was hanging over the line, and there’s no conclusive evidence from the angles I saw that it was out. I’d be so mad if we’d scored a goal with the ball very plausibly over the byline like that and it was disallowed. Still, maybe it’s wasteful but it seems kinda silly that premier league grounds don’t have cameras in line with the byline to correct for parallax error. But it’s such an obvious foul on Gabriel. I… Read more »

Martigoal

A player is in an offside position if:

  • any part of the head, body or feet is nearer to the opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the second-last opponent

Gordon was offside since there were only Gabriel between him and our goal line.. that’s how I would interpret the rule.

A Different George

The law requires that the attacking player be ahead of the ball at the time it is played for him to be offside regardless of the number of defenders involved.

He’s got no hair but we don’t care...

Yes it’s a disgrace. We all agree and think at some point the money will become even greater which will force clubs to take decisions like this to court.

He’s got no hair but we don’t care...

What’s also a disgrace is your stubbornness to keep playing a goalkeeper who, VAR aside, cost us the goal.
It’ll be even more of a disgrace if Ramsdale doesn’t start the next game.

Qwaliteee

Your match analysis priorities are all over the place mate.

They’re a disgrace.

Must try harder.

Mpls

It sure was, Mikel.
Along with not getting a stone cold man advantage.

Billp79

I think we need to replace Partey and Eddie in the January window
and its moving time for Cedric and Elneny

Qwaliteee

I would still give Eddie the benefit of the doubt between now and seasons end.

Redsy

Why has a club never taken legal action against PGMOL when the difference in finishing 1 point outside then champions league places can cost 50 mill pounds. That’s not a mistake today ..

Baz

Because it’s quite frankly ridiculous and opens up a pandoras box of legal action on every controversial call. The game these days is shit enough without it turning into an american style lawsuit fest

Qwaliteee

Yeah, heaven forbid that justice and correct decisions are ever allowed to be reached.

Brian

Snowflake alert! Negative comment incoming. If we could – gasp – score a goal or 2, he wouldn’t have to complain about refs.

Emi Rates

You’re s Chelsea, Man U, City, Spuds and Newcastle fan from Stoke rolled into one.

Qwaliteee

You’re not the Messiah, you’re just a very naughty troll.

batsquadronleader

Watch the ball his Joelinton’s left bicep and go straight down.

Emi Rates

Arteta us right. The PGMOL is a joke and the way their mates run VAR is an absolute piss take. Refs complain about the abuse they get and they have no right to. They deserve all the abuse they get. Fucking bent cunts.

Eric Blair

Is there any point watching football anymore when results are created by morons or corrupt officials, where a PL club can be owned by a country that chops up journalists and executes homosexuals, where that country will host a World Cup ffs

Chip Douglass

The ball didn’t go out of play. It was obviously a push and a foul on Gabriel. I don’t know if it was offside.

But Arsenal were bad today. Very lucky to be as high as they are in the table as those attackers are just not delivering.

Qwaliteee

Look at the number of goals we have scored compared to the rest of the Premiership.

Not many clubs have a healthier GD.

kazoo

Can’t blame the manager. The ball was CLEARLY out of bounds, and there was CLEARLY a foul by the Newcastle player who barrels into the Arsenal defender in front of the goal. VAR is often a joke–but this was an especially absurd, disgraceful decision.

Baz

Cant blame the manager for a piss poor performance. Right.

Qwaliteee

But for the idiocy of PGMOL we would have gained a hard fought point.

A point away to Newcastle minus Jesus, Odegaard, ESR and Partey would hardly have been piss poor.

SG_Gooner

The VAR and Ref are dishonest to their federation

Baz

Not sure I care as much about the VAR call as many other supporters.

The performance was shite, we created nothing, we deserved a point at the most, the football was stagnant and slow. We are no where near the level as last year and I think our league position flatters us.

We are going nowhere fast without a proper striker. Arteta making a big fuss about thr VAR call is his way of distracting from the shit performance.

Qwaliteee

You’ll care next May if we miss out on the title by a single point.

Or maybe you won’t…..
