Arsenal Women Arsecast 93: Arsenal 1-2 Chelsea

Welcome to a brand new episode of the Arsenal Women Arsecast, the number one podcast about Arsenal Women.

In this episode of the Arsenal Women Arsecast Tim and Jamie pore over the 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Saturday and try to dissect how to separate this result and performance from the wider funk that Arsenal seem to be in. Did Arsenal just ‘get varianced’? And is it possible to separate that from the wider malaise? Tim and Jamie talk about the defending on the goals conceded and whether a lack of confidence in attack had an impact on the result with more than one proven player low on confidence. In the second half, Tim and Jamie deal with listener questions on Rosa Kafaji and the lack of integration for young players, on Clare Wheatley’s role and whether more communication from ‘upstairs’ is needed at the club and on the delicate balance between rotation and trying and failing to find partnerships that work.

Honestly it seems like its a lot of things hitting us all at once. Low confidence, poor defending esp. an apparent lack of a defensive shape required to sustain wins in the current landscape of football in Europe. We also are lacking the intensity and guile to sustain a league/UWCL challenge, with luck we might get the Conti Cup again thanks to playing in Europe. It’s suddenly open season and we’re the targets. We need a turn around ASAP to at least get something from the Cups, the League’s gone. If we address the biggest issues ; Defensive shape and… Read more »

Definitely best to be positive, Dennis – and the League is not over at all yet, which is a positive sentiment itself. The online blog criticism frankly is OTT – so quickly the overwhelming Hacken victory & very credible draw versus a revitalised City seem to be forgotten. And for sure we were the better team versus Chelsea & the result could easily have ended being in our favour.

Wednesday should be a great game – and I hope that the dynamic Rosa starts! I would also like to see KK given a game from the start.

Always enjoy these blogs with Jamie on board, like a new sort of comedy act!! I am not a conspiracy theorist but Casey Stoney in the stadium on Saturday strikes me as a coincidence too far. The other option for change in manager is the brillliant Jane Ludlow. I know that more than a handful of players are ‘lacking confidence’ and some seem uncertain of their role, this is a Manager fault, he needs to address this rather than makes nice tactical and wordy speeches at press conferences. I am also keen that while Russo and Mead did not have… Read more »

In my humble opinion, in the future, I don’t know if it’s too near, Arsenal should consider hiring Arteta’s assistant coach or Pep Guardiola’s as senior coach for the women’s team (voices in my head). It’s a more attacking style of football that’s working, using a 4-3-3 formation more frequently, which isn’t being used in the women’s Arsenal this season, or using a 4-2-3-1 more frequently. Wednesday will be our turning point, everything will work out, emanating positive energy for this team.

I just want Arsenal to go back to what it was before.

While everyone’s calling for Jonas’ head, I genuinely think Clare Wheatley should be right behind him on the way out. She’s arguably the worst executive in the WSL right now. For the first time in a decade, we’ve failed to win three consecutive home games and conceded nine goals in just three matches against City, Bayern, and Chelsea. We’re about to fall seven points behind Chelsea, and we still have to play both Chelsea and City away. The league is essentially over before matchday six—it’s ridiculous. Where’s the hope in all this? Everything’s unraveling, and it’s clear the players need… Read more »

If Jonas keeps the job, no a top player is going to arrive in January, forget about it.
