Arteta: Our duty to stop sensitive information leaking

Four years ago, after news of a training ground bust-up between Dani Ceballos and David Luiz made headlines, Mikel Arteta vowed whoever leaked the information would face consequences.

“I don’t like the fact that that incident comes out at all,” he said. “And I will find out where it is coming from and if that is the case, that goes completely against what I expect from each other, the privacy and the confidentiality that we need, and there will be consequences.”

A few months later, after the departure of a couple of suspects, Arteta confirmed “he had a solid idea” of the guilty party.

Since then, the policy of “what happens behind closed doors, stays behind closed doors” has been closely enforced. Even though the sheer size of the club has meant it’s difficult to police everything that filters out, for the most part, tittle-tattle and, specifically, unofficial medical updates have been few and far between.

While they do still happen – a recent story about a setback for Takehiro Tomiyasu is an example – it’s clear the boss doesn’t want anybody at the club giving a leg up to opponents, or for that matter, those playing Fantasy Premier League.

On team news leaking, he said: “That’s something, I understand. There are a lot of kids that want to do their own teams and obviously, they are managers and picking their positions, but it is our job to protect that [information] as much as possible because you don’t want to give anything away, it’s normal.

On protecting private information, he added: “It’s a big part of our job. We have a lot of information, a lot of sensitive information, a lot of information that a lot of people want to have and share. And it’s our obligation, our duty, to maintain and protect the club and the team in the best possible way.”

Arteta’s priority right now is keeping Liverpool manager Arne Slot guessing ahead of Sunday’s clash with the Reds at the Emirates. While the Dutchman knows the Gunners will be without William Saliba and Martin Odegaard, it’s unclear whether Bukayo Saka (absent from the last two games) will be fit enough to start.

Arteta says his medical team is doing everything it can to get players back but he didn’t sound overly positive about the situation. Whatever team he selects, he knows Arsenal face a big test given Liverpool have won 11 of their 12 games this season under their new manager.

“Obviously, they’re in a really good moment, they’re in a great run,” acknowledged the Spaniard. “You can see the touch that he [Slot] has given to a team that was already very strong, but you can see his fingerprints on that team.

“It’s a team that for nine years has been competing at the highest level in every competition. They know how to compete, they know how to threaten you when the ball is really far, when the ball is in the outside units especially.

“They have the individual quality to damage you. They are good on set pieces. It’s a team that for nine years consistently has been there. That means that they are really good at everything that they do.”

“For me, they are one of the best teams in the last decade, and certainly the history of this Premier League, because they competed against a team [Man City] that was creating record after record, and they were consistent. That shows a lot of relentlessness and a winning mentality to be consistent, even when at some point they could not reach it [the title], so that’s a big credit and the work they’ve done with a clear identity. That’s something remarkable in my opinion.”

Injuries, the plague on our success in recent seasons.

mjc1892

Not sure that’s true. We got very lucky last season for the most part in keeping all of our most important players fit.
And season prior Saliba was obviously a huge miss but you can’t really be derailed by a single injury if you harbour ambitions of winning the league. The fact that Saka and Odegaard have been ever presents for several years until now is nothing short of a miracle.

Alex

And we still missed

Goonerink

this isnt true, i think its better said you SHOULDNT be.

theres many occasions where a single injury could cost the league.

Vardy gets injured during Leicester’s win.
Aguero injured in the qpr match.
rooney injured during utd’s last few winning seasons.

Gunner1971

Some would consider it to be Hell to be on the bench but this weekend it may well be Heaven.

Tom 007

The first 15 players on our team sheet are top notch so any injury/suspension to anyone is a hindrance to our playing system and fluidity on the pitch.

BillyKrystal

I’m basically the same as an Arsenal player. My employer also gets very upset when I leak information like credit cards and personal data. Inadvertently of course, these scammers are very sophisticated now!

Arsene Wenger No.1

‘Leave me alone i want to act with impunity you pesky fans asking all the time about our players health while i mastermind tactics vs Liverpool’ I mean this is so small minded and petty, typical of Everton mentality running in his veins. In an f.a cup game in 2003 Alex Ferguson challenged Wenger/ Arsenal with his infamous : ”Arsenal are nothing without Henry”. Arsene responded fielding a team inside Old Trafford without Thiery and beat him 0-2 with goals from Edu and Wiltord. He then put Henry in 2nd half just to take the piss. Thats how you respond!… Read more »

I remember it well. It, however, has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with Arteta being tight lipped around injuries. Seriously, I genuinely can’t understand how or why you’ve made that connection?!

Dr. Gooner

Ramsdalemyhero is that you???

Gunner1971

Wenger is gone and he’s not coming back.
I know that’s tough to accept but all good things come to an end and we move on to new things and new ways.
Arteta has set various winning and scoring records and, if Son or Chris Wood had finished their dinner, we would be champions and would have toppled Pep G and City’s billions a few short years after we were dogsh*t.
Get some prespective bro.

Texas Red

Seems like your one of those people who gets off on saying ridiculous and controversial things. Yes?

I miss santi cazorla

Just read the headline without the football context, and guess Arteta’s profession.

All of the above and a few more probably.

Chris

Is Arteta implying fantasy football is a game for kids? I can see some people not liking that if so!

A different George

It’s interesting that he didn’t mention the most serious problem with leaks concerning injuries: not fantasy football, but betting.

Perhaps Arteta should take a close look at himself in regards to revealing sensitive information. I do not think it’s a coincidence that Arsenal face so many contentious decisions. Decisions to our detriment that seem inconsistent with decisions in other games. Does anyone else think all these red cards could be because of a certain Amazon documentary when Arteta was coaching Man City and telling his players to foul. All teams play the dark arts but do not have a manger that broadcasted this to millions. Including I am sure some officials which have noted his strategy.

Scrubbychubby

Except he was doing this under Pep’s instructions obviously. As Pep was the manager. And Man City are the beneficiaries of more contentious decisions than anyone else. You’ve put 2 and 2 together and come up with 5.

Arshavins left foot

Just an observation of course Pepe made decisions but I do think Arteta has carried the legacy from this documentary and it’s costing us points. I think he is doing great job but all these harsh decisions probably stem from being too open about dark arts in front of the lens.

Scrubbychubby

Maybe you’re right. It just seems a bit strange if Arteta was suffering because of that while Pep, who’s instructions he was operating under seems to get away scot free.

Arshavins left foot

Yes that sucks. Arteta has been thrown under the bus with these comments when every other team in the premier league does all the tricks to win. Man City should not of allowed the comments to be in the documentary to protect Artetas reputation. I really do not think all these red cards are not related to these comments influencing decisions

Dr. Gooner

I appreciate the effort to find meaning in a heap of chaos, but that’s about as far fetched as it gets for explaining how referees behave. The shortest answer is that they’re generally poor at their jobs.

Arshavins left foot

I totally agree with you the standard of officiating is really poor for a massive game. But the truth is Arteta does seem to get on the receiving end of the worse decisions so perhaps this documentary has had some negativity towards him.

Tom

Corrupt in their jobs FIFY.

Heavenly Chapecoense

He has a dossier on Man City and Pep doesn’t like that.

Gunner1971

PGMOL have been treating Arsenal diffferently long before Arteta. They rpobably disliked Wenger even more.
They’re also not naive enough to think that Professional coaches and players do not employ cynical tactics and always have done.
They didn’t watch an Amazon show and get their eyes opened up. Come on!

Arshavins left foot

If you think Gunner 1971 that spouting your mouth off on Amazon does not give negativity then you my friend are delusional. This was a classic Eddie Guerrero moment. “I lie, I cheat, I steal”. I simply think this was a mistake.

Gunner1971

The show is an edit of various footage, therefore this scene was selected for viewing. If it’s a “mistake” who do you think made it? It wasn’t Arteta, but it had to be ok’d by someone at City. What do you think was going through their mind then?
And anyway, this should have rebounded against City after the show came out, not Arsenal. It came out August 2018. Do you remember City getting done by the refs? I don’t.

Tom

Would have been very hyped for this game, had it not been for so many injuries.
Currently feeling more like an underdog, reminiscent of feelings back on 2019 time.
Hopefully a surprise selection or two are on the cards and they get through 65 odd mins unscathed.

Scrubbychubby

We were underdogs before the last game against Pool in the league too and gave them a good seeing to. Resulting in the celebration police really losing their shit over Odegaard taking a photo which was great to see. Bring it on I say – this Arsenal team is VERY good with their back against the wall.

Tom

We’ll always be underdogs to a degree away from home against one of the big team, especially if they’re on form and we’re not. No shame in losing by a goal or even two against the big boys away from home as long as the fight is shown during the game. Pool were sloppy last season in a number of ways. This season so far, they are looking very much back to their best. BIG caveat: They have yet to play a big team. Its just a shame we’re deleted and not on form for this game because I do… Read more »

Dr. Gooner

This is a home game. Arsenal are still the betting favorite but the bookies think a draw is most likely. Liverpool don’t travel well.

Stay humble, Mikel.

I was being ironic, people. Ah well, a lesson in the art of written communication, tone is everything.

STAY HUMBLE, Mikel. That work better? Na, okay as you were. LOVE YOU MIKEL X
