Arsenal attacker Mariona Caldentey has pulled out of the Spain squad for Tuesday’s friendly against Italy for personal reasons. Mariona didn’t train when she first arrived with the Spain camp due to some small muscle discomfort but went on to star in their 1-1 draw with Canada on Friday.
Mariona has been given permission to attend tonight’s Ballon D’Or ceremony as she is nominated but she will not return to the Spain camp thereafter and will be with family instead. At the moment, there is no indication that she won’t be available for Sunday’s trip to Manchester United.
Meanwhile, Denmark coach Andree Jeglertz has admitted that Kathrine Kuhl’s situation at Arsenal is not ideal as far as he is concerned, but not terminal for her international career. He told DR, ‘It’s not a catastrophe, but it’s clear that this situation can’t continue for too long. We’ll see what happens when the winter break ends.
‘Of course, Kathrine needs to play football matches and perform for her own development. There’s fierce competition within the national team, and she’s well aware of that. However, I will never say that if you don’t play for your club, you won’t play for the national team.’
Got any sense she is looking for another club
I don’t get that sense especially since she has still some time left on her contract
KK is kinda lightweight & will not challenge anyone in the 1st 11 currently. I’m surprised she wasn’t sent on loan. She & Lina Hurtig are clearly not up to scratch in Arsenal. Hard to take, but true!
Kuhl scored for Denmark against South Africa – she’s good enough for our first Eleven.
No. Her grandmother died.
I think the original comment was about KK, not Mariona, but thanks for the information. I had a feeling it must be a bereavement.
KK to start the game versus MU 🙂
Big hugs to Mariona Caldentey, hope she is okay. And congratulations on eighth place in the Ballon d’Or.
Fingers crossed for KK – perhaps RS will be able to find a way to use her that plays to her strengths. I’ve been most convinced by her as a winger on the right. She could maybe be a right sided playmaker. So far, she hasn’t shown the necessary physicality for a CM in this team.
Yes she would need to bulk up considerably to play centrally in the WSL but then would some of her technical skills suffer?
Yui Hasegawa of Man.City is hardly a man mountain. She doesn’t get involved in the physical stuff, leaves that to the others and just takes up good positions to receive the ball and use it.
Big fan of Hasegawa here. She’s incredibly difficult – some would say impossible – to get the ball off! She uses her small stature to good effect, much like Kim Little does. KK is fairly tall and long-legged and it’s easier to destabilise her. So even if she didn’t bulk up, she’d still have to find ball-retention techniques to suit her physique – like Williamson or Maanum have.
Really hope Mariona is available for Man United game. Probably a crucial game in the battle for Champions League spots.
